View Full Version : THE BEST RPG ON THE DS
I hate them. I find them boring. I hate havin to sit and watch constant dialog. I guess it's because I have ADD real bad or something. BUT I got into playing Twilight Princess and Phantom Hourglass, and recently have been loving Mass Effect (might actually do 2 playthroughs). I know the big names are Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger (?), but can you tell me what you think is THE BESTEST EVER RPG ON THE DS. Thank you and have a wonderful evening.
You're either drunk or high right now, aren't you?

Outstanding. Although, I only really use it to watch movies. I like to lean back and put my feet up, with the keyboard on my lap. It's just more comfortable looking straight on at the 19", instead of turning my head. I'd switch them around, but then it'll look funny on my desk. I think. I should try it out.

Don't you have all the emulators for your DS? Play Earthbound, then beat that and play Mother 3.

Yes, but RPG's take awhile for me to get into, so I do not want to spend hours and hours playing shit I am not going to like, if I were to "try them out myself". I'd like recommendations.

What, how is playing a game on an emulator on the DS any different from playing a regular game on the DS
Earthbound has the best dialogue in video game history. Everything is satirical and hilarious, and usually not important. There is never even long dialogue between characters. And if you REALLY want to, you can have the computer auto-fight the battles for you, althrough I really do not recommend that.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I do not like that take turns bullshit fighting. I want real time action like Zelda.

Neither Phantom Hourglass nor Twilight Princess are really RPGs

I don't think any zelda is an rpg tbh. More of an adventure game really.
Also, download a snes emulator and get illusion of gaia. You'd like that one.

Also, Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest RPGs ever for any system.
But probably not if you find talking to be boring.
Fignuts
04-15-2009, 03:12 AM
That is a horrible analogy.
Why the fuck would you say cheeseburgers have cheese. It fucking says it in the word itself, ffs.
And even if you did say it, why wouldn't you just say cheeseburgers have cheese, or more on topic, None of the Zeldas are rpgs.

Which is what you should have just said in the first place, cause zelda isn't a cheeseburger!

My World, My Way is a ridiculous game. Like it's pretty half assed for a modern RPG but there is so much humour that kinda makes up for it. Like it breaks all the typical conventions because you play this stuck up bitch of a princess and you're trying to hook up with this adventurer guy and he is all "lol, yeah right, bitch. You = worthless" so the whole thing is like some bullshit adventure to impress this guy, but she is just a worthless stuck up princess, so like the king hires a bunch of actors for all the towns and has you fighting all these pussy ass monsters.

Also, her powers mostly consist of bitching and moaning so hard that reality itself changes to make her shut up, so that's pretty lawl

The World Ends With You is pretty good, though the story is pretty lacking. I had a lot of fun with it though.

My favorite is The World Ends With You, but I've also enjoyed Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, Magical Starsign, Pokemon: Pearl, and Contact. I'm not really into RPGs though.

The World Ends With You has real fighting, not any of this turn-based faggotry you speak of.
It is also excellent.

For the DS. While you can emulate that shit on DS, it's not made for the DS.

Eternal Sonata. You will probably find it weirds as shit though since everyone does this weird shaking when they are standing still, the dialogue is fucked, there isn't much of a story and the main character is Frederic Chopin. Yes, the composer. Plus there are these random breaks in the game that spend 10 minutes dropping history all over the place.
Also, Tales of Vesperia is coming to PS3 soon. Dunno if you ever played any of the other Tales of Games, but this one is by far the best.

What are the battles like? Turn based and such?
Funky Fly

Eternal Sonata is... uh, real time turn based, if you can call it that. Like everyone has a turn where you get like 5 - 10 seconds to mash the the shit out of the attack button, build up a massive combo and then unleash a power move on your opponent(s). 10 characters in the PS3 version and it doesn't make much difference who you use. This game can is 3 players local. Dunno if it's online.
Tales of Vesperia is real time. You have a team of 4 people active in the field and you can switch characters in and out of the 4 (total of 9 characters in the PS3 version) between battles. You've got a lot of variety, here: main guy is a all round melee guy, 2 speed melee characters, 1 heavy bruiser, 1 hybrid melee/all around magic guy, 1 offensive mage, 1 defensive mage and 1 PS3 exclusive character, so I have no clue what's up there. This one is 4 players local. No online.

The gameboy Castlevanias have a very strong rpg influence. I mean it's still primarily action, but there is leveling up, tons of different spells and weapons and all that good stuff.
Also, may I add that the inverted castle in SotN can go fuck itself.
I think I am going to give Final Fantasy a try. I have no clue about anything in them. Should I start with 3, 4 or another one.

1 is pretty simplistic, but then it is an early RPG so it's expected. 3 is ok, but it takes a while to get into it. Apparently they reworked the DS version of 4 to make it harder. Like 4 was already retardedly hard, but if you did exactly the right things according to some guide someone worked out along time ago you could beat the game every single time. Now it's way harder. 5 and 6 are supposed to be great too. Didn't spend too much time with 2, but it's probably in the same category as 1.
1 & 2 came together on a GBA cart called Dawn of Souls. Reworked graphics plus extra dungeons and shit. 3 and 4 on the DS are 3D interpretations of 2D games. Everything's been changed or adjusted and some shit was added in.
Everyone wants 7 to be ported, but they probably never will.

4 is ridculous on DS. I can't get past the first cave.
I would jizz if 6 is ported ot the DS in 3D though.
For the handheld, 6 on GBA is probably the best right now.

1 and 7 are the only ones I've finished. Got the gba roms for 2,4, and 6 tho. Will prolly skip 2 as I've heard a lot of frustrating things about leveling up.

FFVI. You cannot go wrong there. The SNES version is classic, the GBA version has a few little extra things, and the PS1 version has a stunning FMV at the end. While I prefer the story line for 8 over 6, 6 has a special place in my heart as the first RPG I ever beat.

So I played Chrono Trigger for 3 1/2 fucking hours today. Awesome story so far. Had no idea it'd be about time traveling. I'm at The End of Time now. Looks like a pirate ship or something. Crazy stuff.

Got pretty far in Chrono Trigger on playstation, kinda stopped playing though. Loading times were annoying and I have it on SNES so I want to play that one more. Dunno
Played another hour so far today. Having to use a strategy guide a lot lately, mainly cause I do not have the patience going around talking to everyone, figuring out what to do next.

Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is the best RPG on the DS. I just beat it again last night after 3 and half years and still loved every minute of it. I found it fairly easy (I didn't die once), but I'm also pretty good at platforming. I loved dodging and counter attacking enemies. I also like how you're not always facing the same enemies all the time. It never really feels repetitive.
This is also coming from someone who doesn't like Final Fantasy and other similar RPGs. I get bored of them pretty quickly and I don't like level grinding.

Superstar Saga was amazing...I never got Partners in Time though. I need to before the next one comes out.
