Guys who made shitty gimmicks good

One of the characteristics of the wrestling world that you'll find anywhere you go is the ability to come up with some of the stupidest fucking characters you could possibly imagine, and then wrestlers are supposed to make these characters look good. More often than not, these shitty gimmicks fail. And it's nothing against those wrestlers, because even guys with an enormous amount of charisma and talent like Kevin Nash can falter with a shitty gimmick.

But every so often, a wrestler gets a shitty gimmick, runs with it, and makes that character work. For whatever reason, something clicks and the fans buy into it. So let's take time to remember the people who were able to make that happen.

I was thinking about doing a write up for each one but I'm too lazy now so I'll just list them. Maybe I'll come back and do a write up later.

My point was that gimmicks are ideas. Attention getters. Gimmicks are very rarely "bad". The question comes in when a guy is placed with a gimmick and it either works for him or it doesn't. Some guys can't do certain things and the gimmick is thusly inhibited. Also, some gimmicks are executed horribly, but it doesn't make it a bad gimmick, it just means the writers over- or underplayed a high potential idea.

Matt Borne as Doink will always be a personal favorite of mine. Perfect execution.

Adrian Adonis throwing away his tough guy image and turning into "The Adorable One" was amazing in it self. He got that thing over and you can argue that was his best performance.

Speaking of Bastion Booger.....Mike Shaw, the guy who played Booger, got over in NWA/WCW playing the loveablE Norman the Lunatic

Val Venis did a tremendous job with his introduction promos to get his character over.

Kamala is another one that comes to mind. He had longevity with his gimmick.

I'd say Undertaker and Kane. I think had anyone else been in Undertaker's shoes, they wouldn't have been able to pull it off. Kane has been through a lot of bullshit, and can nowhere be described as an eventful career lying ahead of him, but he still exists, so he's made it good I guess.

ok... so many things wrong with this vignette.

You know, if they did this song with some Country Music, instead of "Let's Hear it for the Boy," it would fix many of the issues with this vignette.

Then again, the riding in the back of a carriage together, riding horses together, chasing each other in ATVs while shirtless, and the pool-related horseplay while in speedos, riding a motorcycle together, it was probably fucked from the get go.

It probably (hopefully) came across much differently in 1984 Memphis, Tennessee than now. After all, it was a pre-Brokeback Mountain world. Now you can picture one of them saying "I wish I knew how to quit you."

I'd say no because Warrior created that gimmick himself. He got ridiculously over from whatever the hell he created. It's different than guys like Umaga, Kane, or Kizarny who are told what there gimmicks are before debuting.
