View Full Version : Why does everyone "sweat" Ricky the Dragon Steamboat
Triple A

Maybe he was really good "before my time" but as a kid, I never remember liking him at all. I never remember him even doing anything noteworthy other than spitting fire. He was just a midcard wrestler as far as I remember.
So why does everyone act like he is the best wrestler ever? I feel like I def missed something and he was good in like 1985 or something when I was 2 years old before I liked wrestling.
Or is he just a wrestler that people pretend to like because that is what other "smarts" say and they also want to seem like they are a "smart" who "appreciates good wrestling skills even when they were watching him when they were like 4 years old".

Pretty good theme. Kinda making me pumped up to actually watch this match. I thought his theme was the Chicago Bulls theme though for some reason.

In a time when Hulkamania was running wild, and the whole wrestling universe revolved around that, Steamboat was a true standout in the ring. Sure his mic work wasn't the greatest, but between bells there were few that could deliver the way he could. If it weren't for Hogan being the centre of the universe at the time, Steamboat would have probably had a much bigger run in the WWF. I was young, but I remember him being a favourite.

btw, on an unrelated note, they should totally bring back those mini rings wrestlers had to ride down the ring in on wrestlemania, at least with the last few mania's since they've had to walk like half a football field

I believe those were for Andre, because, well, he couldn't walk that far. I could be wrong though.
AAA is back in the wrestling forums.
Rick Steamboat is great BTW.

Were you an NWA fan? because if you are basing this on his WWE tenure, Dont.
He has a good run going in and out of WM3, but for the most part the WWE wasted him.
He was the single hottest thing in the NWA in the late 80s.
His matches with flair were epic at the time.

IMO, Steamboat's best matches came with Flair at Wrestle War 89, Chi-Town Rumble 89 and Clash of the Champions VI: Ragin Cajun.

Steamboat was one of may favorites when I was a kid. I remember when Macho "crushed" Ricky's throat with the ring bell and thinking this stuff was real back then. It was horrible, i think that I may have cried.

I was able to get many tapes back then too though.

His stuff in NWA is awesome. I recently started watching his matches, he literally always had the crowd wrapped around his finger, they'd live and die by him and everything he did. And he was a threat to anyone but could also lose to anyone. He was one of those guys.
and his chops were awesome.

The "bulls theme" is called Project sirius-eye in the sky which steamboat used for a while, before that gay oriental theme wwe gave him, that shit may as well say "ching chang chong" its so stereotypical sounding.

It's 2 different songs by The Alan Parsons Project
On the Album Eye In the Sky, Sirius is track #1 and fades out into track #2 Eye In the Sky.

yea, Trips, like you, I never caught NWA until the 90's, so only really knew Steamboat from WM 3 and his "Dragon" gimmick in the 90's WWF. But I got to watch all those NWA PPV's in the 90's and was filled in on what I missed.
