Though some slides at GDC spoiled the surprise, Harmonix and Traveler's Tales have made Lego Rock Band official today with an announcement. The game is due out this year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, with a separate DS version being developed in partnership with Backbone Entertainment. Some parents may like the idea of music games but be uncomfortable with the lyrics in most games, so this one is posing itself as a "family-friendly music experience." So far, five songs have been announced for the game, noted for being "suitable for younger audiences":

"Song 2" -- Blur
"Kung Fu Fighting" -- Carl Douglas
"The Final Countdown" -- Europe
"Boys and Girls" -- Good Charlotte
"So What" -- Pink

Using the signature Lego style, players can customize their own avatars as well as their roadies and crew. The game also supports Rock Band and "other music game" controllers. "Rock Band is a social game experience that crosses every generation and every genre of rock," said Bob Picunko, senior VP of electronic games for MTV Games. "Harmonix and MTV Games are big fans of the Lego game franchise and excited to work with TT Games to develop a new take on Rock Band that focuses on great music and Lego humor that's fun for the whole family."

While I find this news a little weird that the next Lego game is basically the next Rock Band game...it does excite me with hopes that perhaps characters from their other Lego titles will be playable in this. I would love to rock out the guitar as Indiana Jones...or Vader

I'm fine if they are transferrable to Rock Band AND because it's aimed for kids, they do not have dumbed down note charts.

Staring at lego while I play I can do without thx.

Demise?

It was shite to begin with this doesn't really make it any worse. Just makes Rock Band look dumber by assosciation.

I still don't really understand the need for this other than combining two huge video game series. This would be a huge waste if you couldn't build your own stage, venues, tour bus/van, and other things. I doubt they'll put that in, but the whole point of Lego is to build shit. They could make this unique and fun by actually making you (or letting you) build those things, but we'll probably end up with Lego version of rock stars... which would still be adorable.

Contrary to what Kane Knight thinks, I've loved the recent Lego games (Star Wars, Indiana, and Batman). However I do think they should slow down on the releases. Batman came out 3 months after Indiana Jones. Because of this I haven't gone back and collected everything in Indiana Jones.

Details build on Lego Rock Band, 'rock challenges' not for squares (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/details-build-on-lego-rock-band-rock-challenges-not-for-squar/)

Though we've known about Lego Rock Band (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lego-rock-band/) -- more or less, that is -- since early this year (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/03/rumor-travellers-tales-working-on-lego-rock-band/), an Xbox.com listing (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/l/legorockband/) for the game has revealed a few more tidbits to satiate our non-stop hunger for more info on the title. For starters, the game's progression has been revealed as incorporating the Lego theme with collectible Lego pieces that will allow you to, "build cooler vehicles and move to new venues." Furthermore, an extra easy (totally for babies) difficult setting has been added to the game for the ... ahem ... less than face-meltingly-advanced Rock Band-ers in our lives.

To add even more Lego flavor to the mix, the game will feature challenges that allow you to "destroy a giant robot, summon a storm, and demolish a skyscraper." One important bullet-point glaringly missing from all news on the game (and its Beatles-themed brethren (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-beatles-rock-band/), for that matter) is the ability to export the songs into Rock Band 2 (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/harmonix-clarifies-rb1-compatibility-to-rock-band-2/), a la Rock Band 1's tracks. We've put in a note to publisher MTV Games (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mtv-games) for clarification on this and will keep you updated if and when we hear more info.

I bet they are going to be gay and be all "we're not telling ;)" and then not include it at the end.

"extra easy" mode---lol

I wonder if its going to be anything like easy on World Tour where all you have to do is hit the strum bar....or perhaps that will be easy and extra easy will be simply free form. You can hit what ever you want and not worry about failing.

Is this supposed to be Lego Jack White?

Kane Knight

Looks like Lego " random dude in cowboy outfit."

The only way to tell if it's Jack is to see a Lego girl pretending to be his sister and pretending even harder to be a drummer.

The only way I will buy this is if I can transfer the songs.. Then I will buy it, transfer the songs, and sell it. I want the Final Countdown damnit!

Or rent it the very first day it hits the video stores, and transfer the songs before anyone else can.

Unless one of the people who works there does it first.
