Spyro the Dragon is looking a bit more powerful than we remember him in the upcoming animated feature The Legend of Spyro 3D.

A Spyro fansite (believe it or not) unearthed the teaser poster for the film at the official website of film sales company Velvet Octopus, showing a large, confident-looking version of everyone's favorite little purple dragon. The film, which we've been telling you about since 2007, found a producer last year in the form of Ash R. Shah, who signed a five-picture deal with Velvet Octopus that included the CGI Spyro feature.

The teaser poster is very bare, with no information other than that the movie exists. The DarkSpyro fan site has the film listed for a December 2009 release, but as far as I can see that's nowhere near official. As far as stars go, the IMDB entry for the film lists Elijah Wood as Spyro and Gary Oldman as Ignitus, but again, nothing official on that front.

So basically, we have an official teaser image, which you can see below. Enjoy it, as it could wind up being the only good thing about the movie.

So, they're doing a Spyro movie and it's produced by the guy that did Eragon? Was that film any good? I never saw it. I'm guessing it's bad based on the comments on Kotaku. Anyway, this is news to me. I had no idea they had plans for a film. Their seems to be a sudden influx of game and anime based movies. Is this because of the sudden popularity of things like the Wii, DS and 360?

Like Kotaku said, no more info is know about the Spyro film. Why 3D though? 3D as in CGI or 3D as in "wear these weird glasses that don't make anything 3D but makes everything sort of pink.". It will probably be the 2nd one, which is pointless.

i wonder if thats a "zoomed in" picture to make him look big, like the bakcground is actually a small painting of the sky or something

cuz him being that big kinda destroys the whole point :o

or maybe thats him at the end or middle of the movie after he 'grows up'

either way, bad idea is bad

I really want to know why we have this sudden flood of movies based on games and anime. We have Spyro, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li, Dragonball, Akira, Blood the Last Vampire, Bioshock and apparantly, The Neverhood has a claymation movie in the works. That's a lot of game/anime movies.

The only reason I can think of is due to the Wii and DS causing gamings popularity to rise and Hollywood saw an opportunity and appear to have screwed it up.

Speaking of games going to movies, apparently Broken Sword and Metal Gear Solid are in the works, and Christian Bale has expressed 'interest' in playing Solid Snake. Make of it what you will.

I think MGS has the potential, given the story, but has to be done right.

On topic of Spyro, I played the 1st one for PS when I was younger and somewhat enjoyed it, but have no real interest of seeing this.

Although my 4 year old probably will, so I'll end up seeing it anyway.
