View Full Version : I was just thinking (King of the Ring related)

I would not mind it if Chris Jericho won the 2009 King of the Ring Tournament, assuming they decide to hold one this year. Edge is currently the World Heavyweight Champion, and with SmackDown! being so refreshed in the draft, there isn't really a shortage of faces that can come after him for the belt.

Jericho needs something to do, and it seems they're teasing a program with Rey Mysterio over the Intercontinental Championship. Jericho winning the belt before dropping it back to Rey, or someone fairly fresh like John Morrison would be kind of cool, as it'd add more bragging rights to Jericho ("I just broke my own record of most IC Title reigns...again"), but Jericho deserves something a little...more.

In 2006, when they initially decided to bring back the tournament after its four year absence, they decided to give the tournament to Booker T, instead of the up-and-comer Bobby Lashley. I saw this as a way of having a credible star win the event, so it looked more desirable in future years. William Regal winning last year was obviously meant to elevate him, but Regal's suspension kind of fucked that up. Still, the experienced veteran took it over a young star (CM Punk).

Chris Jericho doesn't need to become King of the Ring, but Jericho is one of the most reliable performers the WWE has. Jericho winning the tournament this year would create a lot of interest as to who could take it in 2010. The tournament would restore some credence to the title "King," and it'd just add so much heat to Jericho.

Jericho isn't really lacking for heat right now. I'd rather they get somebody new in there.

King of the Ring is one of those things that is kind of hit and miss on whether or not it winning it actually does anything for the guy. For every Austin 3:16 being born, there's a King Mabel. But we know Jericho is over. Why not throw the ball to Swagger or Kofi (just tossing out names) and see what happens?

I've called either Matt Hardy or Jack Swagger.

I agree Jericho would be the perfect choice right now, you can always use him winning it as a way to push the other wrestlers aswell...

Jericho would be ideal

However, I think they'll give it to somebody who needs it more. It's more or less a given that it's more fitting that a heel wins it. Matt Hardy would be good, as would The Miz.

Just as long as they don't let "Santina" win it and claim to be the only woman to have ever won it.

Or Hornswoggle.

I think Miz would be an interesting choice.

Could see a Morisson/Miz final actually.

If WWE is going to continually push Matt Hardy he'd be a great person to win it this year. Jericho doesn't need it and I'd rather someone more deserving win, but with his new personality he's pretty much the perfect choice.

Agreed 110%. He'd be a great choice to win it all, and if something were to happen Sunday between Cena and Miz, the next night is the 3-hr. KotR RAW ep. anyway, so why not have the feud between them build before during and after the tourney, possibly with Miz going over Cena in the finals (maybe or maybe not with a little outside "help" from Big Show)?

If Matt is going to win it all this year or if he's even to be in the tournament, he needs to drop all that "WAH! My right second metacarpal is broken, and mean ol' Vickie's FORCIN' me to wrestle, when I don't WANNA! WAH! I'm wrestling under protest:'(!" crap. Seriously, a heel crybaby isn't going to cut it with me, nor does it make him look anywhere near worthy of main event status. Until he man's up a bit the highest I could see him going at this point in time, is MAYBE to a US title match but no title.

Jericho would be an excellent choice..... my only problem is that winning an 8 man tourni isnt that big of a deal.... they have the roster size to have a 32 man tourni, so why don't they do it? they have 4 flippin shows...... a minimum of 2 matches a show.... then Jericho can claim that instead of surviving 3 men, he survived 5......

I think it'd be cool if they made this the largest King of the Ring ever. They have 6 hours a week and tons of guys to use so why not include most of the guys who aren't Batista, HHH, Orton, Edge, or Cena.

This would be a great idea. Something like a 32-bracket tournament would be pretty great.

Big fan of the idea of expanding the tournament.

You could even have the losing finalist claim to be the "King of <INSERT NAME OF BRAND HERE>". I think that would work well for a guy like The Miz. Say if he lost to Morrison in the final he could still return to Raw claiming to be "The King of Raw" and proclaiming that he is better than everyone on the show because of that fact. I think that'd garner some Heel Heat.

As for Jericho, I think he is a good call, mainly cos he's never won it, but I kinda prefer a "young, up and comer" to take the crown as it "tests the water" a little.

Who the fuck cares about King of the Ring anymore. All it is is this shitty tournament they have on RAW now.

Where did you hear this, because I could swear, sometime during April, I think, I specifically remember an ad saying that it would be a 3-hr. RAW event on May 18th.

Yeah, I kind of agree with DrA. Taking it off PPV in the full 8-man tournament capacity instantly loses some of the prestige. It's not going to come back to PPV, and it does make for a better episode of Raw than usual, so oh well I guess.

I think Ted DiBiase winning it in the finals against CAWdy Rhodes would be a great way to lead to his face turn.

I'd be a little weary about giving it to a guy that they are just deciding to push, in case said push doesn't work out. The King of the Ring has had some really big misses over the years, which is why I'd like to see a really reliable star pick up the victory this year. Gamble with it next year.

I can totally see Ted DiBiase winning the entire thing, by the way. There are rumours that he is going to be pushed, and with The Marine 2 coming out in the American winter months, that pretty much gives them until then to make him somewhat of a big deal. Winning the King of the Ring and turning face to go over Cody Rhodes and have a bit of a feud with Randy Orton would be the easiest way to do that, as early as it feels for DiBiase (who doesn't seem like anything special to me).

They should definitely make the tournament a little bigger, and actually put the last few rounds on PPV. That would make it feel like a much bigger deal winning it.
