So after reading the "who should be rehired" thread I was plesantly suprised at how many people really liked Muhammad Hassan and I wanted to see what people thought of Hassan. I liked him as both a wrestler and as a gimmick. His gimmmick wasnt your average anti-american Sultan/ Tiger Ali Singh, Iron Shiek gimmick. He kinda brought a diffrent spin on the fact that he was an Arab American (even though they spoke Farsi which is a Persian language) and he demanded that he not be discriminated against. I think that he could have been around for a long time but then this happened.

Most people dont know this but that was the Spirit Squad in there fist gimick in the WWE :shifty: It was done before the bombings in London happened but aired on the same day and WWE refused to pull the scene. I remember seeing parts of it on Fox News and people like Bill O'Reilly calling it reprehensible, disgusting and insensitive. His last aired match was against the Undertaker at the Great American Bash and he retired soon after that after all the negitive publicity he got after the London bombing incident. So how did you feel about Muhammed Hassan?

I loved the gimmick and the guy behind it (Mark Copani). But there's one error you made: His character wasn't pulled because of Bill O'Reilly, it was because of protests from the arab community of Dearborn to UPN. There was even a pretty big deal made about the protest in one of the Detroit papers, either the Free Press or the News, can't remember which, though, but I read it with great interest, and by the end of the article, sadness.

I remember being in the US when this happened and it was huge news all over CNN. The breaking headline was that World Wrestling Entertainment had agreed to pull the Muhammad Hassan character off TV. Was gutted :(

Loved the character. I think the whole masked guy thing kind of took it too far, but not in an offensive to me way. More like a "really? Come on" kind of way.

Loved his promo the next week though:

I love how the fans just don't pay attention to what he is saying and start chanting USA.

That attack with the guys in masks was a highlight of the programme but at the same time when it was aired there was an apology stating that they didn't have time to edit it from the show. Smackdown was taped tuesday and it was aired thursday, 2 days to edit a 10 minute segment out of a show and they couldn't do it? An untrained chimp could do it inside of 5 minutes, was just left in as a big talking point, wwe jmping aboard the controversy bandwagon as usual.

WWE used to transmit Smackdown to its affiliates via Satellite late Wednesday night when it was on UPN/Thursday nights, so they really only had less than a day.

Makes me sad that if he had stayed on Raw, they could have gotten away with a lot more and I doubt there would have been anywhere near as much pressure to pull him from TV.

Even at that it takes literally a few minutes to do, i remember taker crucifying austin on raw one year and in the uk the show just ended at the match previous. Not exactly hard to chop off 10 minutes and just put the wwe logo there to end it.

He was a "decent" (not great) wrestler, but he made that gimmick really work. WWE Kreative™, as usual, screwed it up as they're known to do. The "masked man" and the playing of "Islamic prayer" music was the dumbest thing ever.

It could have been a really sophisticated gimmick instead of "AMERICA FUCK YEAH!!!!!" dumb stuff as it became toward the end.

Hassan's post-New York Post promo was excellent.

Correction: This specific Smackdown was actually taped on a Monday night before Raw as part of a 4th of July Super Show.

I was there and one of my highlights as a wrestling fan is that I can always claim to be there the night that spelled the beginning of the end for the Hassan character. The things that could have been... Mark Copani was incredible.

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that Spike TV! was against him going over to Raw. I remember being really surprised since they were just starting their "pushing the envelope" type of attitude as a network.

:wtf:

Not sure if you're being serious or not but those guys looked much bigger built than the spirit squad. I remember that it was reported that Val venis was one of the "sympathisers".

I really loved the character. I remember his debut promo with Mick Foley. Everything just clicked with the guy, but the WWE unfortunately created a character they couldn't handle. He was meant to be a heel, but I'm not even sure if the WWE knew why.

IMO, he had a "Wrestlemania moment" at Wrestlemania goes Hollywood.

I loved the character, never thought he had much of a chance to showcase any skills in the ring.
Just thought it was crazy when I heard Daviari shouting in Farsi.

The WWE made a pretty big mistake by giving him Jerry Lawler as his first big opponent. Lawler still wrestles frequently, and is over, but the match had so much energy sucked out of it because JR was in King's corner, and Lawler got in way too much offense on the guy.

Hassan should have killed Lawler, and then asked for some more.

I think if they cut it right after Davaris loss everything would have been fine.
