Now, in multiplayer, if I'm topped out while playing with, say, you and Funky, you guys get my extra star power split up evenly between you. So for two players, half each. Of course, this is useless if you and Funky are topped out, but if we're all topped out, we should probably be reaping that sweet band multiplier.

For some of the "Fill your SP gauge as many times as possible" challenges, maybe all, I don't know, it seems like this is a necessity. Mostly because I've nailed all the SP phrases on a song with no sustained notes, and it was only enough for Platinum. Since it's a bass (I think) challenge, a second player can't help directly....But if he keeps his SP gauge topped out, he can donate to me.

The multiplayer is actually better than RB, IMO. I still think Rock Band is the better series right now, but I like the way shit works in MP GH5 now. Of course, it could use some tweaks. After the other night, the ability to change audio settings while on Live would be nice. I could have backed out, and then been reinvited, but I might have needed a lot of tweaking and that would be a pain.

Also, there's no excuse with the "diffuculity on the fly" deal they couldn't have let us change difficulties at the setlist menu or something. Or even had us pick each time like RB.

As everyone knows by now, Activision first announced that Kurt Cobain would appear in Guitar Hero 5 a few weeks ago and many gamers commented with mixed thoughts on the matter.

We, of course, assumed that Courtney Love, who is in control of a lot of Cobain's material from his famed band Nirvana, was on board. She would have had to sign off on the deal in order for Activision to have been allowed to use his likeness and Nirvana's music.

However, a Twitter update Courtney posted earlier today seems to suggest otherwise...

For the record this Guitar Hero sh*t is breach of contract on a Bullys part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction.



Should Kurt have been a part of the game?

Apparently Courtney feels slighted and perhaps the details of the deal didn't quite work out just as she had expected. On the other hand, it is Courtney Love, so anyone's guess is as good as the next.

We've put in a call to Activision, but have yet to get any response on the matter. Stay tuned as we will keep you posted.

This is a statement regarding Nirvana, Guitar Hero and the likeness of the late Kurt Cobain.

We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game. The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate – we have no control whatsoever in that area.

While we were aware of Kurt’s image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn’t know players have the ability to unlock the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in “re-locking” Kurt’s character so that this won’t continue in the future.

It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.

After a while, no matter who you are - and especially if you're a celebrity - you're subject to these things. Nobody is above it.

HOWEVER:

If his estate has beef with how he's presented, then fine. His music and likeness are theirs to watch over. I do find having an issue with how players will use him after they drop $60 to be petty.

Mini-Review:

Is it me, or is the visuals... hazy? I do find the menu pretty easy to get around, and everything seems to load much faster. Overall the game just seems to function better.

The setlist, like World Tour, appeal to the majority again. This means the majority will like 5 songs and skip the rest of the 80+ tracks. I remember when GH was about rock, now I'm looking at Stevie fucking Wonder. Mind you, like WT's set these are good songs, but I don't find a great deal of these 'playable' tracks. RB2 also appealed the majority, but you'd hardly notice with their ridiculous DLC. On a whole the set-list is better than WT at least.

The new multiplayer modes and how they work means little to me, but as I stated I do like how easy they are to boot up if I were so inclined.

The new Music Studio is easier to use. But guess what; the options nearly doubled. So I'd say it about evens out and comes right back to how complicated it was the first time around. Still, it sounds better and I think songs will come together quicker (composition wise. the new options will make completing songs longer actually... you get what you put in). Miss the live recording studio, though. The Windows Media Visualizer blows. Who asked for that?

But the people doing the misusing aren't even the developers, it's the gamers - some of which may be fans of Kurt. If you don't think Kurt should headline "Kryptonite", then don't do it.

This isn't the same as poor comic adaptions, where I have no choice in the matter. I can either buy the movie ticket/game/whatever or not. But if there was a game that gave the option of Spider-Man shooting laser out of his eyes, I wouldn't feel offended, I just wouldn't do it.

Andre the Giant's been featured in wrestling games as a special unlock. I don't remember his family getting butthurt over him being in TLC matches or whatever unlikely set-up the gamers put him in.

I have a feeling if the developers mentioned "Hey, we're gunna set it up so that Kurt makes a clown out of himself" to Courtney, she would have put a nix on it.

Rock Band: The Beatles does not have this problem. From what I've read, the developers were in communication of their idea of the game and how each member would be portrayed with each of the families every step of the way.

The importance of accuratly portraying an "icon" does fall on the developer.

Rock Band: The Beatles does not have this problem. From what I've read, the developers were in communication of their idea of the game and how each member would be portrayed with each of the families every step of the way.

The importance of accuratly portraying an "icon" does fall on the developer.

Yeah, that's another situation to get into. "Why is scratching comsidered bad? Is rap not music? etc."

And yeah, "re-locking" so he doesn't prance like a girl does make sense. Again, it falls on the developers to make sure stuff like that doesn't happen. If they made it so that each legend performs their signature style during each song then I don't think we'd have this problem.

Also, I think everyone is complaining about Cobain because it hits closer to home for them. Mostly 20somethings and younger are playing this game and were probably affected by grunge movement. Hence all the backlash.

Doesn't mean Cash and Santana should be overlooked though.

It's like, I get the idea, but the rest seems silly. Like, first off, we're talking about a game where his music was already licensed. Seems pretty hypocritical right there, especially since the main draw of having his music in the game is because we're talking top forty hits. People are arguing what they claim Kurt would have wanted mostly because they put him on a pedestal mostly in a way contrary to their belief of his ideals.

Personally, I think he was a corporate shill marketing counter-culture, so I don't give a shit. Offing himself ensured he was an icon, more or less permanently, so it seems really dumb to argue his ideals when his final act was basically to become the sort of shallow media icon his beliefs opposed.

So I had to exchange my guitar bundle at TRU for a new one because the guitar didn't work correctly. I mailed in the new receipt with the new sticker on the box, seeing if it'll work, and the GHVH website says it's valid and I'll get another copy in 4-6 weeks. :cool:
