What Would Kevin Do?
06-01-2009, 09:28 PM
Finally. I've been waiting for him to take over, and the night is finally here. Thoughts? Think he'll do decent? I have faith that he'll be entertaining, although I don't have enough faith in people to think they'll accept his non-Leno stylings.

Excited as well. I think he'll do fine. The dry run tapings were apparently hilarious and still very Conan-style humor.

Anyone knows what's the story behind the host change? To be honest that's the first time I even hear about it.

Jay Leno announced around two years ago that he would be retiring from the Tonight Show in 2009, so NBC (or maybe Leno himself) chose Conan to replace him. Subsequently, Jimmy Fallon was chosen to take over for Conan on Late Night.

I may be alone in this one, but I actually kind of enjoy Late Nite with Jimmy Fallon.

Not quite the entire story. 5 years ago, Conan's contract was up, and he was getting offers from other networks, so NBC promised him the Tonight Show in 5 years. I don't think Jay had anything to do with picking him.

I liked Andy more when he'd sit on the chair next to Conan when he was at his desk, or when guests were there, etc. I don't like him at that podium, hearing him laugh at jokes off-screen is getting a bit annoying.

crossrine

I dunno I like Andy though, I think he's doing a good job. Conan definitely feeds off his presence.

The one thing I notice about Conan is even though he has this pressure on him in the "Tonight Show" Slot, he still has phenomenal command on the stage. You can just see all his experience... his transitions are smooth, he's always calm and cool and he never gets rattled from a bad joke, so he pretty much embodies the spirit of all the great late night talk show hosts.

Triple A
06-05-2009, 02:37 AM
Nah not gonna say I don't like him.

Just think he never really added that much or something, but it's kind of a tough role to be in in the first place. Like it is really hard to be funny as "Conan's sidekick" but still not upstage him. The announcer role is kinda rough. I feel like he "tries to be funny" sometimes whenever he gets a chance but it is really hard to be funny in that situation so like kinda comes off as "try hard" b/c he's trying to make something out of nothing. :(

Also yeah the laughing at every joke off camera thing is kinda annoying. FEEL BAD FOR HIM. :-\

Gotta say that I have really grown to enjoy Jimmy Fallon.

I know this is the Conan thread but people were discussing Fallon's show too.

At first I thought it was a huge trainwreck and felt bad for him. I thought it was gonna bomb or something

Over the past couple weeks though I've been enjoying the show a ton. It's not Conan, but I still have a blast watching it. One hour of late night tv isn't enough, so having this show be entertaining is awesome.

I really like how the humor/writing is wise enough not to try too hard. It has its own style.
I think the concept of having him play games with his guests is incredible. Like playing air hockey with a celebrity is so simple it's genius.
He's pretty good with his guests, and makes great conversation.
It's just amazing to see him and Jim from The Office play video games, or him play beirut (beer pong) with one of the Golden Girls. That shit is surreal.

I think its amazing that he's doing the whole Saved by the Bell thing. His biggest strength is that he's dialed into the current mid 20's generation.

They changed the format of the show a bit. He's usually on location somewhere now, and if he has a guest, he will interview them there instead of the studio like he used to. I haven't watched it much, but I think it's more music driven now, which I guess isn't that bad.
