Rajah's is broken and I want somewhere to talk about cricket. This will probably get no responses since you don't have a thread already but never mind.
Massive Summer ahead; the mickey mouse world 20/20 followed by the serious stuff, England v Australia.
Anyway right now England are about to lose to Holland. A team of amateurs. In our own tournament. Embarrassing really. I wouldn't care too much but now all the Indians will say 'YOU ONLY DONT LIKE 20/20 CAUSE YOU'RE RUBBISH AT IT'. No, we don't like it cause it's shit.

Shocking bit of umpiring there. If you've got big lines to show where the wides are you really can't be giving them for deliveries 3 inches inside.
Miotch
06-05-2009, 03:33 PM
Are you just going to talk to yourself then?

06-05-2009, 03:40 PM
I would have. But now you're here to keep me company :y:
Miotch loves his cricket.

Talk about folding under pressure. Missed 3 easy(ish) runouts in the last 2 overs, pathetic stuff.

Fucking amazing game, shocking performance by england but equally good by netherlands, thats 20/20 for you.
1_Pablo_Angel
06-05-2009, 04:47 PM
It'd be OK if one of their players hit a ridiculously good innings. But we just gave it away by collapsing utterly under a bit of pressure at the end.
Doesn't bode well at all.
Also what's the point in playing Key and then holding him down the order when you've left Mascarenhas out of the side?
Londoner
06-05-2009, 04:56 PM
That's what i've been thinking, Key is fucking shite. Never liked him. And nowlook, he's let us down again. Some batsmen.
1_Pablo_Angel
06-05-2009, 05:25 PM
Well to be fair I love Rob Key and his pudgey little face. But there's no point putting him in with 2 overs left. He's not that kind of batsman.
Londoner
06-05-2009, 05:39 PM
I can't see the point of him being in 20/20 at all tbh.
Londoner
06-05-2009, 05:40 PM
Also the bowling selection was questionable/the fielding positions.

It's just nice to see Ponting falling over himself early in his innings. As usual. You'd think he might have ironed out that technical flaw a bit by now.
Pete Cash
06-06-2009, 09:55 AM
australians always bat with flaws in their techniques.
look at langer, hayden, hughes, katich, clarke, hussey all have massive technique flaws yet impressive records
Londoner
06-06-2009, 09:59 AM
yep, aussies are flawed, thanks for being honest pete.;)
I'm guessing aussies will get 140.
Pete Cash
06-06-2009, 10:01 AM
but we are also the most successful cricketing nation ever :)
our batsman grow up in harsher conditions and learn to tough it out. look at ian bell lovely technique but weak as jelly. people with pretty techniques just get gobbled up in australia because of the bouncier wickets traditionally.
Londoner
06-06-2009, 10:04 AM
I think the difference is we play too much cricket.
1_Pablo_Angel
06-06-2009, 10:53 AM
Dunno, we tried not playing any cricket and that didn't work either. It's the standard that's the problem.
The West Indies really are shocking in the field. If someone in my team made some of the mistakes they're making we'd get absolutely bollocked, and I play at a pretty low standard these days.

yeah the australian first class system has 5 sides. helps immensely in making sure that only the BEST players are slugging it out in the first class system. so lets say both nations produce the same amount of quality players... the australian batsman have gone through a tougher harsher system.
169 i will take that after the start.

I don't actually, which would imply I was a touch under the influence :)
He can be good. When he's swinging it at 93mph he's all but unplayable. But you see more of him than me, and that last over was shocking. Great to watch though.

He doesn't swing the ball.
I mean the white ball doesn't swing much anyway but even with the red ball he seldom gets swing any more. He is the worst bowler to take 300 wickets.

We've battered the windies over the last few months yet aussies can't even dominate at all in this.
Pete Cash
06-06-2009, 12:03 PM
lol you batted them in your own country after they beat you in a test series.
Londoner
06-06-2009, 12:04 PM

Pete Cash
06-06-2009, 12:05 PM

If Australia wants to play in these things they should send specialist teams. These sorta ODI sides we send are retarded. Just pick a bunch of t20 specialists and have the others sneak into county teams

No, if Australia loses the Ashes we aren't going to pretend to not care about Test cricket. Can't you remember 2005 or something?
Losing 2005 was one of the darkest days in Australian cricket. If we lose the Ashes this time it won't be QUITE as bad but it would still be terrible.

06-06-2009, 12:51 PM
I don't like 20/20 but it's always shit to lose to crap teams. Windies are pretty crap, Holland are worse. At least Australia lost through a brilliant Chris Gaylre performance, we basically defeated ourselves, which is the worst thing. Mentally weak.
Team Sheep
06-06-2009, 08:44 PM
Twenty 20 is a bit of a crap shoot though. It's like baseball, any team can win on any given day. They should play a best of series like baseball. I'm not suggesting a best of 7 in the world cup because that would take too much time but it should be at least a best of 3.
Bad Company

It's called the tri series, the aussies run it, and it's sweet.
Team Sheep
06-07-2009, 08:34 AM
One game against each team in the group is ridiculous. Each team should play each other at least twice. Then a best of 3 series in the knockouts.
1_Pablo_Angel
06-07-2009, 08:50 AM
That would take fucking ages.
It's a lottery, everyone knows it's a lottery, who cares. Just don't take it too seriously.

1_Pablo_Angel

Alright, you'd have a million games then. Can't see there being sufficient demand for tickets. Plus lots of meaningless/cancelled games.
Team Sheep
06-07-2009, 08:58 AM
There's only 12 teams in the damn thing, it wouldn't take long at all. Each team in each group playing each other twice, that's only 6 games per group. You can get The group stages over within a week. Then another few days for the knockouts, that's 2 weeks tops. Where are the meaningless games coming from?
Londoner
06-07-2009, 09:04 AM
Wouldn't work in this tournament, mainly because its a short tournament anyway and the ashes is straight after. Its just basically a warm up to get everybody in to the ashes series.

06-07-2009, 09:06 AM

Twenty 20 is not the future of the fucking game. It is a bit of a giggle.
I know lots of shallow stupid people think anything that takes longer than an hour and a half is boring but they are stupid and shallow and should not be pandered to. The game is more important than making a few quid in the short term. It's a pity the people in charge are businessmen rather than sportsmen. This is one area we could actually learn something from America.

Well you can't deny the popularity has increased since the inception of Twenty20. It may not be the cup of tea for purists like you, but that doesn't really matter. It's popular and it's growing, so it's going to be capitalized on for years to come.

Popularity might've increased temporarily but you're talking about a tiny spike in the context of a sport that's been around for over 100 years. In England 2020 attendances have dropped significantly this summer because there's so fucking much of it. I would also say that the 2005 Ashes did more for overall participation and interest levels in this country than 20/20 ever has. What did we do after that? Chase the short term cash by flogging Test rights to Sky, ensuring that most people can't watch it and as part of the contract we have to play an ever increasing number of pointless matches.
There is a place for 20/20 but not at the detriment of other forms of the game, and oversaturation is a real worry. Of course noone cares about this because they're just chasing the short term cash. As usual.
It doesn't take a purist to see that 20/20 is a far more limited game than Test cricket. One that, while popular now, is far less likely to stand the test of time.

Twenty20 cricket is useful in growing cricket in other markets. Especially those of Africa and Asia where cricket is already fairly integrated but lagging behind football as a national game.
However, it is all well and good for the game to grow and it will because it is a good game. It is up to the ICC to capitalise and to say force South Africa and India to play games against emerging teams in those regions. South Africa did everything they could to avoid ODI against Kenya at a time when Kenya should have really been given full status.
There is no point having an exciting game if the ICC is a corrupt organisation that panders to a few countries just because they vote in a bloc.

Sri Lanka are brilliant. I knew Dilshan was good when I picked him in my fantasy world cup side years ago. He scored about 5 runs in 6 innings then, the bastard.

A few of those Irish cricketers are pretty good and could benefit from the ICC allowing them to play test matches against Bangladesh. I think two test leagues with a promotion/relegation system would be ideal.
Players like Boyd Rankin could go far under a proper professional system.

It would also encourage some Irish players to stick with Ireland not go to on to be England back-ups. Eoin Morgan and Ed Joyce to name two. If Ireland had those pair, they'd have been more competitive in the 20/20.
But really Irish cricket has absolutely no chance if your biggest ambition is to maybe get picked for England. It already has to compete with football, rugby and GAA in a tiny country.

I really don't see a massive difference between Ireland and the lower full members in talent. There is a fair gulf in ability between the top three full members and the rest. The gap between say South Africa and the West Indies is greater than that between Ireland and Bangladesh I would think.
The saddest thing about Ed Joyce is he decided on England during the period of time when Bell and Vaughan would not be dropped. He probably would have got a run if the selectors had been honest about it. Then they tried to turn him into a ODI opener.

Well the Irish cricket board were talking publically about this last week, to the effect of: what does Irish cricket have to do to gain full Test status? They are not calling for it immediately, but there are no guidelines for how it should even eventually happen. Irish cricket cannot capitalise on ODI or 20/20 World Cup performances if there is no future in the sport for aspiring players or current players to stick with the team and go full-time.
Cricket is such an oddly run sport. They appear intent on keeping it niche in terms of participation but want to make it huge in terms of audience. There's no concept that long-term competition has to be sustained and wide if people are to keep watching.

You have no idea what's happening in India post defeat.
Guru Dave when will you admit that the Irish team are technically more gifted than those hooligans that play for India.
TBH, I am a fan of the Irish cricket team. But it would be foolish to compare them with the Indian cricket team at least for now.

Yeah, nobody massively overrates the Irish side and pretends they can win test series outside of Ireland lol

Michael Vaughan officially retires from international cricket.
A sad day I suppose, not that he should be anywhere near the team.

Worst opening day I can remember in a very long time
Unless we are somehow batting again by the end of the day, it's looking like a 1-1 series heading into the Oval. Shit!

Ponting said after the second test that some outcomes are decided in the very first session of a test. Perfect example.
Personally, never known England to capitulate that badly. I've known us drop like flies before...there's no natural leaders and the team lacks a good batsmen...thought Trott would have played today to be honest.
Shocked....just shocked.

I was trying to hang on to a glimmer of hope that the pitch was swinging loads or something.
The Ozzie reply seems to dissagree with my theory.
Agree that we should of gone with Trott. Bopara and Bell hardly install confidence. Strauss and Collingwood have had decent series thus far, and Prior didn't do anything wrong today, but the rest of the order should all have a good long look at themselves.
Impeccable
08-07-2009, 02:37 PM
Yeah, right down the order, pathetic...Cook is having a poor test...Bopara is out of form but I wouldn't drop him... I'm not sure he's a number three so I'd move him down to four and put Trott in at three. At least with Trott, he'd have been an unknown quantity in there...much like Pietersen was in 2005.
As you say Strauss and Colly have had good series, but as today showed, they're always susceptible to a low score/cock up.
I wanted to believe that we weren't a one dimensional team relying on Pitersen and Flintoff. **sobs**
Just picked up Ashes cricket for the xbox 360...off to make things right.
