If gamers manage to find themselves stuck on future Nintendo games then all they’ll need to do is pause the game and the game will automatically complete the level for them.
In a recent interview Shigeru Miyamoto tried to explain the rationale behind such a radical idea. The explanation that he presented was that younger and less experienced players will be able to get past any difficultly barriers the game may present, meaning that players will no longer need to resort to cheat codes or walkthroughs.
In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they’re ready” confirmed Miyamoto, through his translator. “And yes, we’re looking into this for future games, too.
What are your thoughts on this? I think the intent is all good and well, but... I don't know. Not really feeling it.

Yeah this has actually been a "hot topic" in the game industry. There are a lot of people who think it would be a good idea for all games. Not just for kids. A lot of people will get stuck on a part for so long that they will just stop playing the game.
All the hardcore dick waving gamers are against it, cause I guess games are only for people willing to make it their number one hobby.

"At the end of the day it is just an option. Use it if you want, or don't"
That's what I want to say, and while it's true, it is also a temptation. If you keep dying in one spot a couple times, you may just go ahead and use this. Where if you kept doing it just a few more times you could have gotten it and the satisfaction/award would be all the better. I think the only way I would appreciate something like this is if it becomes an option after dying/getting stuck X amount of times. In the end, for a Mario Game I know I could get through it just fine and doubt I would ever use it, but with it being there who knows. Perhaps I'd want to get through a level quickly, and just go through it.
I think this would actually work better for 360/PS3 for the achievements/awards. By getting something in return for beating a game and never using this, there is more reason to not use it. Other people can see if you went the easy way or not. But for the Wii, it will really only be yourself who knows, so its a matter of what you can live with.

Yeah. I find even now, with the temptation of gamefaqs and such, I find myself more often than not reading walkthroughs for an area I'm stuck on. I have no willpower. Will probably use this far more often than I'd like to admit. :'(

If I were to rank gaming "taints" they would go like this.
You beat the game yourself - Zero taint
You looked a guide - Minimal taint because you still had to play the game
You had a friend over and he said "Let me beat this level/guy!" - More taint than a guide because the friend either knew or is figuring it out for you and you just watched.
Game Genie - Until now, this was the Ultimate Taint. You're like Neo in the Matrix at this point. No excuse to fail, but you do still had to go through and play it.
The Game Beats Itself - The New Ultimate Taint. You did nothing. Hope you enjoy getting your ass kicked on level 30, newb.

This is stupid. What is the point of buying a game if you aren't even going to play it? I can see reading guides or whatever to figure something out, but letting the game play for you?
I get that they're trying to make games more mainstream and all, but come on.. this is getting TOO casual-friendly.

I don't know, being stuck so badly at a point in a game makes it that much more satisfying when you finally beat it.

Obviously.
But really, I don't think it hurts anything. Nothing is forcing you to use it.

Exactly. Since I started playing God of War II on Titan mode, it is the most satisfying thing ever to finally beat something that you have been stuck at for hours.

I remember when they actually patented this process. Kinda funny.
I think it's stupid and pointless, but I can't really get myself up in arms about it. If someone wants to pay fifty bucks and not even fully play the game, let 'em.
So uh, now when we pause the game to go take a lengthy, but borderline award winning shit, we'll be 3 stages further than before? :shifty:
Seriously though, I don't know. I think it's fairly stupid... and do they make that many games flat out hard nowadays? Sure, some games have different difficulty levels but I'm assuming the point of that is to let the gamer find out what difficulty gives them a challenge.
Ah well, whatever.

Yeah the whole "Simply pause the game and it completes it for you" part kinda threw me off too LOL. I think they meant, when you pause the game there'd be an option to bypass a part or w/e. /shrug

Willing to bet that some jackass game company will let you pause it to bypass the game part but still not let you skip over one of their lengthy cut scenes.

This. I would prolly never use it. But it's presence doesn't actually hurt anything.
