As in I'm trying to get my laptop to play vids on the tv (I've got an s-video cable connected to both of them). Was told I just need to plug in said cable into tv/laptop and that I'd be able to watch from there...dunno, I'm probably being stupid here...help?

For my laptop, you can switch which monitors the video card will output to by:
Right click desktop --> Properties --> Settings --> Advanced
In that Advanced menu, there's a tab that let's you determine which monitors are active (laptop screen, TV, etc.)

Your mileage may vary.

Does your TV have a VGA in? Cause S-Video is shit by comparison.

You should have a connection on your PC and TV like that, just get a cable to go between them.

DVI to HDMI is the way to go.

HDMI to HDMI, then you'll get sound in the same cable.
