How is it?
I remember liking the first one. Didn't play any further than the first level of he second, cause basic enemies took like a thousand fucking bullets to die.

My bro likes it, I think it blows. The destruction effects are awesome, but it's meh all around. A pseudo open-world and vehicles and all that... It does nothing for me. Maybe I'm being a 'critic', but I have to imagine the game would be better served using it's old last gen philosophy. Rather than bite the open-world style, anyway.

ugh. sick of everyone making their games open world, when most of them don't know how to do it properly

And this one is laughable. It's not so much open as it is a series of interconnected race tracks (seriously, youtube it yourself). So you're driving about these canyons mission to mission (usually destroying something to show off the physics). Don't know what they were going for here.

I think the biggest flaw in a lot of these open world games is a lack of variety.
Crackdown, Just Cause, Far Cry 2 are all fun, but could have been amazing if you weren't doing the same missions all the time. The same missions between all 3 games, mind you. It's like the devs were like "well it's open world, so they'll find something to do if the missions feel redundant."

Don't get me started on Mercenaries 1.5, I mean Mercenaries 2.

I think they confuse open-world with it's literal meaning: we have a large world with few barriers and that's it. It's actually more about freedom and variety. Your open-world can seem small simply because there is nothing to do. Fable 2's world is relatively small, but it's deep. Same for GTA4 (though some perks from San Andreas could have stayed).

Infamous was a great example of how to do an openworld game. At least from a mission perspective. There are so many different types of side missions, that it always manages to stay fresh.
I'm hoping the upcoming crackdown 2, and just cause 2 follow suit, because as I said, these games could be great with the right tweaking.

I am in love with Red Faction.
Fragnuts, if you're not sure, give it a rent and try it out.
We've been seeing the game in rarely used so far. A good few months and a few will come in. There is a single player demo on Live you could check out too.

I rented it and loved it. The Nano Rifle is my best friend. Nothing like disintegrating buildings/vehicles/people :D

I like it, the multiplayer is pretty fun too.
I agree the game world could have been done better though - it's fairly barren as open world environments go. Would be nice if something could take the building destroying mechanic and implement it in a more well rounded game, it's actually pretty fun.
