Let me lay the situation down for you. Maltby is backchecking and checks a guy into the bench area. The problem was the door was open and the guy went groin/thigh area right into the part of the boards that was open. It looked brutal. Gerald Gallant (an ex-wing even though this a pointless piece of information) and the GM of the Blue Jackets called it a "gutless" check and that Maltby should be suspended. The player is out for the rest of the season with a bruised thigh. Not like Columbus was going anywhere anyways. Except to the golf course. Anyhow, if you saw the check give me your thoughts as to whether or not he should be suspended.

I think there should be no fine or suspension. He could not have seen that the door was open because McCarty opened it about 2 seconds before Maltby made the hit.

Thoughts?

Kirk Maltby is the man

I didn't see it but I just wanted to ask, what is backchecking?

I really don't understand a whole lot when it comes to the whole checking part of hockey. :o

I didn't see it, but unless you're discription is totally biased it didn't sound too bad, just the wrong place at the wrong time.

uhhhhhhhh he took it right in the stomach where there is no protection, it was a pretty cheap hipcheck, had it been a normal check it wouldn't have been that bad.

It's funny that you mentions that Columbus "isn't going anywhere", making it sound like that makes the hit "not as bad".

Anyways, I didn't see the hit, and it probably was unintentional. Maybe a 1 or 2 game suspension or something, nothing too severe. I dunno, I'll wait till I see the hit before really commenting
