i was watching smackdown and it suddenly came to me, why do the commentators in the wwe hardly say any of the move names? forget the trademark moves im talking about the regular moves instead all i hear is,
'great slam' or 'great reversal' or others to that effect,

whats all that about?

the best i could come up with as far as an explanation goes is so the kids dont try and emulate them

i could be wrong and it was just that smackdown in particular, but pay close attention to night of champions and see.

Vince is behind that. Jim Ross used to fuck up.

id say JR got about 90% of the moves he called right

it always annoys me when the commentators get the move wrong, i have no idea why im always like

'even i know that fucking move, fuck you michael cole/tony schiavone'

thats why i like scott hudon, now there is a guy that knows

Ya Sadly I noticed that too...they should get JR to sit infront of the CAW mode on N64's No Mercy and learn the names.

Or he could go the Tony Schiavone route and call every move a sidewalk slam. Or "WHATTAMOVE"

Mike Tenay "Oooh nice split-leg moonsault by Daniels" IT'S A FUCKING ARABIAN PRESS a split-leg is in the corner. I mean, most people don't know that, but when it's a signature move of someone, get it right. Or "oooh nice face jam" FUCKING FACE JAM?! It's a goddamn bulldog.

vince wants the kids to be ignorant when it comes to naming moves. also so he can re-name them whenever he wants.

and i used to sit in front of the games and learn the moves.. lol

The most pissed I've ever gotten at a move being called the wrong name was the TLC 4 match on RAW. Jeff Hardy had RVD set up for the Van Terminator, first JR starts hyping about going "Coast 2 Coast" then RVD nailed it and he called it the Van Terminator, then he started referencing it as the "Coast 2 Coast" again. I wanted to Van Terminator JR in the f'n head.

They're pretty good about it on ECW, all though I scratched my head when Stryker called Regal's half nelson suplex a "Reverse Exploder Suplex".

I mean, I can see why he called it that, but still sort of confused me.

It's much more descriptive to call everything 'a tremendous slam'.

I do get annoyed when announcers call moves by their wrong names, but I've realized that my knowledge of wrestling moves is based mostly on playing No Mercy 64 obsessively as a young boy, and that the knowledge of the announcers and the moves listed by THQ might be no one and the same.

i always play a game with myself when watching wrestling called 'name that move' you should try it, its simple you just name that move

So to answer the question, Guru Dave pretty much has it. It's just down to the way Vince produces the commentary.

Same reason why JR no longer almost loses his voice due to what happens in the ring, Vince doesn't want him screaming apparently.

Vince was never very knowledgeable on moves. I'm sure we all remember "ORR WHAT A MANOOVER" when he was on commentary back in the day.
