Can't remember but it was like i realized it was fake but it felt real at the sametime, if you see what i mean. That's the difference these days, just seems too fake.

Mostly when my dad saw me and my brother watching it and made damn sure we knew it was fake so we wouldn't kill each other imitating it.

I thought it was real until I saw that "Exposed, the Screts of Pro Wrestling Greatest Secrets". This was back in 2000, until then I was a total mark. I remember (being a WCW guy) I was so pissed off when Bret Hart joined the NWO 2000, I was proper shouting at the TV and stuff lol.
But as lame as that sounds, I miss reactions like that. :(

I never thought it was real at all. Even as an 8 year old kid I was aware it was staged and punches didn't connect.
Before I ever saw any wrestling though, my neighbour who was a few years older than me told me that he saw two brothers have a fight in a cage with their Dad watching. I was amazed at how sick that was. My neighbour even proceeded to tell me the history of these brothers, how one burnt the house down and the other one disappeared for years and returned wearing a mask.
What a story that was.

I started as a full-on mark in 1991/92. I really can't pinpoint the time that I became aware of its true nature (I refuse to call it "fake" because that's such a derogatory and simplistic term which doesn't particularly ring true).
I would have become aware of the acting element around 93/94. I may not have realised at the same time that matches were predetermined, I may have just realised there was a strong element of showmanship involved. I definitely knew by 1996 that it was predetermined, but I don't remember exactly when. Sometime in 1994/95 I guess.

I always remembered my visceral reaction to Crush turning on Randy Savage... so much more emotional when you're a kid and think it's real. You also accept bad booking a hell of a lot easier because you don't realise it's bad booking, you just figure that's the way the cookie crumbles. Same goes for bad matches.

Haha, it's still fucking hilarious though.
I don't get why people clap good plays when watching their sports team on television. Celebrating a score or yelling when something goes against the team is understandable but why clap?
Surely a clap is a sign of appreciation of something you like or enjoy and should be used so the performer can hear and acknowledge your approval.

I lied to myself for years as a child, just so I didn't feel like and idiot. Now I just lie to everyone else and pretend I don't watch it. Although my references slip out now and then. I always knew it was fake but didn't know how much was fake or how they did it. The idea of a booker blew my mind when I first found out, which was Secrets of Pro Wrestling Revealed.

Always thought it was fake and a load of shit when I was a kid and all my friends watched it. I'd refuse to stay up on Friday nights to watch Raw with them. Then I finally gave it a shot one day and became a fan, then they all stopped watching and now here I am 10 years later still a huge fan.

On a related note, I remember back when I was 10/11, I use to argue with this girl at school who'd tell me "wrestlers get paid to lose" and I was all "shut the fuck up, you don't know what you're on about".
Gotta keep the flame alive. :D

In all seriousness...
It was my dad who broke the news to me when I was in the 6th grade. I think he may have also broke the news to his dad since back in that time period no one looked behind the curtain. However, my dad's explanation was simple.
The gist of it was this.
"The stuff probably hurts, but they don't want to really hurt each other. These guys have families. They want to support each other. If this guy really hated that guy he could break his arm without even trying. But they're trying to put on a show. I don't know all the details..."
As he was walking away he said something to my mom like "at least it's just a phase."
Yea, it's not like anyone is getting a wrestling mask tattoo.

Maybe I've just had a hell of a day (between finding out about the canceled Ziggler storyline, and my brother getting ready to leave to Iraqastan when today would have been his first day leave.... not sure which one hurts more) but I seriously laughed at that.

Yeah my dad told me when he found out I watched. He also thought it would be a phase.
I always knew. I hated wrestling from the ages of 6-12 because I thought it was "too fake" and "garbage" and "white trash entertainment." When I started watching at 13 I was a huge mark up until about the age of 15 when I found TPWW, Slam Wrestling, and started to think more from a creative/business standpoint than from a mark-fan standpoint. I also started writing wrestling columns around then.
I still think it's garbage and white trash entertainment, but I don't think it's too fake.
