So I read in todays USA Today that EA (who originally were supposed to do UFC Undisputed) is gonna put out an MMA video game.. Fedor is already rumored to be the "poster boy" for this game.. Dana White said that any fighter who signs with EA will never compete in the UFC.. I see where he's coming from but potentially banning fighters from ever competing in UFC could be a huge mistake.. I know Fedor just signed with Strikeforce but having him come in later to fight the likes of Lesnar would be huge..

I'm glad there will be competition for UFC, atleast on the gaming front..

Yeah, basically anyone who was signed on already for the game when Dana made that claim is exempt.

That being said, Dana is still going to sign anyone who ends up in that game that has potential to make him money, provided their contract with EA is over of course.

Ive been listening and watching interviews on both sides of the "game war" and I dont know who to believe.

We all know what has been said on the UFC side of things. Dana went to EA and they said MMA was not a sport and he has told fighters not to sign with the game.

Ive been watching EA's interviews and the lead developer of the game does say that he was not with EA when dana met with them about 2-3 years ago on the game, but the way they talk about MMA and what they want to do with the game, where they want it to go, and what they think of MMA, it got me thinking.


I think Dana may have went in there saying he wanted an EA UFC game not an EA MMA game and EA went on to tell him that UFC was not a sport, which obviously its not, its a promotion. Upon hearing that Dana went on to slam EA and make it hard to sign fighters.

Now do you think that EA just denyed making a strictly UFC game and that pissed dana off, or did EA not think MMA was good enough back then and just jumped on the bandwagon?

I doubt that very much. UFC even 2 to 3 years ago was the biggest brand of the sport. There's not way it wouldn't have been called UFC, unless EA had no desire to properly market the sport. There's the reason the games are FIFA, MLB, and NBA when there are clearly other leagues. EA has never not specified a brand.

That being said, I doubt that Dana's side is the most factually accurate thing on the planet, but it is probably more true than not. EA to me, is def hopping on the bandwaggon and with good reason.

Well I'd predict, Reavant that your assesment may very well be true. Something very similar. EA may have thought UFC, while popular, was just a fad. If EA is revisiting the whole concept, Dana should be happy about it and not trying to stonewall it. If that's the case. Also, he should let his guys sign up for that stuff. Even if he doesn't have a direct hand in it, he (Dana) would benefit from it from the off-spins.

Given EA's track record on the business side of things, I'm going with Dana on this one. Don't really like the guy, but his side of things sounds precisely like EA.

On their side, though, I might be able to sympathize with a change of management causing EA to embrace the sport. But I doubt - I highly fucking doubt - EA refused because UFC would be presented. These are the same fuckers who cared so much about brands, that they cock-blocked 2K sports from using NFL and then tried to do the same to NBA and NHL (both leagues telling them to fuck off).

Yeah, EA cares about brands.

My theory:

Dana went to the leader in sports games, EA, and pitched a UFC game after the Anchor series flopped. EA didn't recognize MMA as a sport, or at least one that fit their definition, and choose to pass. A couple years, huge PPV numbers, a successful reality series, and general public embrace later - EA sees profit. So they announce an MMA game. Betting that's the fucking story.

The game might be good, EA Sports has been on point lately (I think). So the end might justify the means. But I'm totally with Dana on this one. It's too bad he's an asshole promoter, because I'd love to see his sort of off-the-cuff interaction in the videogame industry, where it seems everybody is too pussy to really comment on what goes on there.
