View Full Version : Silva wants Mir?

Anderson Silva wants big-money event fights. And he's willing to work at heavyweight to make sure they happen.

Not only that, they already had an opponent in mind: Frank Mir.

Disinterested by middleweight contenders Nathan Marquardt, Demian Maia and Dan Henderson, and unwilling to fight close friend Lyoto Machida at light heavyweight -- where Silva could conceivably knock off challengers and make a disaster out of the UFC's marquee division -- "The Spider" needs new, challenging scenarios to stay motivated. A move to heavyweight would certainly achieve that, and according to Silva's manager Ed Soares, the UFC was receptive to the idea.

Anyone heard anything of this? And I seriously think that Anderson is looking past Henderson a little too far.

Shake your head but Anderson Silva vs. Frank Mir would be a lot of fun.

He already beat Henderson once. Since then Henderson has just gotten older and slower.

wow, that would be a good fight. Then will he go after Brock?

He SHOULD worry about Maia, though.

Maia is basically Thailes Leites, only he knows how to pull guard. He has one of the best submission games at MW. And, if the Chael Sonnen (overrated, I know, but still) fight was any indication, he can go upstairs for a takedown if need be.

Anderson Silva is very good, but he has weaknesses against good Jiu Jitsu guys. If Lutter had a gas tank, he could have pulled out an upset. The hard part is getting to the ground. Or hell, being conscious by the time you can get close enough to get in takedown position.

I think the fight with Marquardt will open a few eyes. Either Marquardt will prove that he's taken his talent to the next level, or Maia will prove he's for real. I just can't go against Maia, though.

I agree with you on Maia. He's easily one of the top jujitsu guys in all of MMA, across all weight classes. And the Sonnen fight definitely proves that (again regardless of how overrated Sonnen may or may not be). Maia's takedown and transistion from mount to that triangle were tremendous.

Still, all fights start standing and no matter how great I could put over Maia's jujitsu, I do question his ability to ground Anderson Silva and to keep him down long enough to work a submission. I'm not saying Maia couldn't, I just think he would matchup in a similar fashion that Leites did.

Back to the original topic, I'd definitely be interested in a Mir/Silva matchup. I'd rather see Silva stay on top of 185 or move up to 205 permanently but I'd still buy Mir v Silva

i don't think silva needs to fear many people on the ground, seeing as he is a bjj black belt.

Ya know, let's say Silva decided to just do 'dream matchups' or face random opponents across divisions for his last few fights on this contract, then I would want him to fight Randy Couture.

Just because you're a black belt in an art doesn't necessarily mean you a top notch practitioner. Now, I'm not saying Silva's jujitsu is shit or anything, I'm just pointing out a fact that I've come across during my time training in martial arts.

actually thats exactly what it means... at least its supposed to mean that. Some teachers hand them out like candy, but considering silva has one probably fro the nogiera brothers or a gracie, then his shit is top notch. He did submit lutter.

Maia doesnt like "hurting" his opponents but hes going to get past that if he wants to fight silva. Aside from the fact that he has to get past silva's reach Maias takedowns are not technical at all so hes going to have to rely on pulling gaurd, and we see what happens when fighters pull gaurd on anderson.

This match might as well be named silva-leites 2

He got his black belt from minotauro, so I'd say he definetly knows his shit...it just depends how good his MMA jitsu is...

Yea, that's what I was getting at. A McDojo Black Belt =/= a black belt from the Nog brothers or Gracies, etc. Again, not insinuating that Silva doesn't know his jits or anything.

I would want to see this fight, and the see Silva knock out Brock......

Ok, the latter may not happen, but man, that would be awesome!
