View Full Version : Does anyone else love Mario 2 as much as I do?

I feel like everyone treats it as the bastard brother of the Mario series. It's obviously the most different, but that's why I fuckin love it.
It's Robert Stacked with great levels and music. It's just so strange and interesting. I like that.
I know it's a retooled version of the japanese game Doki Doki Panic, but I don't care. It's awesome.
I love the bosses too. It's got great bosses. Most of the Mario games, as great as they were, always had kinda lame bosses.
Plus it's got character select. Toad is easily the man. Dig baby dig. Princess Peach comes in handy in certain quicksand or ice levels though. Frequent flyer miles.
Gotta love a Mario game where I never use Mario. He's well rounded, but I live for the extreme ends of the spectrum.

I beat it this morning on AllStars.

The game was fun, but it being just a reskin of another game that was unrelated to the series is why it's treated as the bastard son of the Mario series.
Still, I probably played that shit more than the original SMB.
Not more than 3 and SMW, but still.

I think it's my favorite. That's probably because it's unique. I can get the same satisfaction from World as I get from 3, pretty much. But there's only one game like 2. Not even any gameboy games that I know of "went there"
This was probably my favorite game growing up, was always playing it. I now put Mario 3 above it, but it's easily my second favorite Mario game of all time. Awesome game, loved the boss fights and the level designs were great. And yeah, the music. That music you posted is burned into my head more than any other Mario theme.
I do like how it plays into the Mario mythos (eventually) by having shy guys and whatnot explained by the Yoshi's Island games.

Yea I love that they incorporated elements of Mario 2 into the series as it went along

I was playing Megaman 9 the other day at my friends house and I couldn't stop thinking how great that shit is. They went and made another classic style megaman game.
They need to do this with Mario. People would obviously want it. I'm not saying they shouldn't make the major releases using state of the art technology. Obviously they're going to make games like Galaxy and beyond, as the franchise moves.
And they should.
I just think it would be awesome if they went back and made some 'prequels' in the style of the sidescroller era
Well, they did do New Super Mario Brothers and they're doing another one for Wii. I think that's as close as we're going to get.
NSMB was good, but too easy. But I won't complain, it had a very old school style.
They also did a direct sequel to Yoshi's Island on the DS.

Yea but that was the one with all the bells and whistles, and the giant 3D mario right?
I liked it, but it's just not the same

love the game. it's so different, but it's probably the most fun out of the NES mario's. I'd probabaly take Mario 3 over it, but I think I've played 2 more.

Fuck yeah I love Mario 2. Out of all the traditional 2D Mario titles, the only one I'm not feeling too much is lost levels, but I'd probably fall in love with it all the same if I could get my grubby hands on it.

It's on Super Mario Allstars for SNES

Not to be contrary, but I just never really "felt the love" for SMB 2...I found it to be the most boring, and also by far, most difficult of the 3 titles on NES, tbh.
I always played as Luigi. Luigi gets no love.

I know that, I still haven't played it much.
They also released it in original form on the Game Boy Color Mario DX cart.

I'm much more likely to play it on a SNES. SNES emulator to be specific.

Fucking love SMB2. While I will always say that SMB3 is the best of the series, I feel like I always played 2 a lot more. Next to Legacy of the Wizard (props if you know about that game), it was probably my favorite game to play as a kid.
I also liked how elements from it, though it wasn't exactly a sequel, were incorporated into later games.

Sorry, I only play Gamecube games, Mario Party 23485734876358634898 and Smash Bros Brawl on it.
I've got every SNES game ever on my PS, I'll play on that.

I remember telling my brother and sister how I beat SMB2 as a child. They didn't believe me, so they asked what the final boss was about. So I said you just had to like feed him food or whatever. They laughed at me and never believed me.

Mario 3 > Mario 2.... but not by much.
Both games are hardcore fun, but the edge goes to Mario 3 imho. Mario 2 has a better variety of bosses, and selecting who you want to play as was fun (Luigi, ftw), but I'm a sucker for theme based levels.

That GBA version is fucking weird and crazy and amazing

Also, yeah, the GBA version is interesting. It's easier, but it's pretty cool.

What is the big difference with the GBA version?

They basically added a bunch of shit and different enemies. Some of the levels are different and there are a few new bosses, including a giant robotic Birdo.

Super Mario: 6 Golden Coins is so underrated.
6 Golden Coins was my favorite Gameboy game after the original Kirby.

I liked 6 Golden Coins but I preferred the first Super Mario Land. The first Super Mario Land is my favourite Mario game.
I fucking hated the first Super Mario Land because it was so fucking small. Couldn't play it really until I had my Super Gameboy. Then it was pretty good.
Anyone else have a Super Gameboy? :y:

I used to have a Super Gameboy. I just remember playing Paper Boy and NBA Jam and it being in color and you had the choice of weird borders to put around the screen.
