Tyler Reks is bad.

That's not to say that he's a remarkably bad wrestler, but the character/gimmick thing is just...well, terrible. His gimmick isn't even really there; they just say "he likes to surf" and gave him 50s beach music. And trying to give a "surfer" gimmick to a guy that looks to be in his late thirties just doesn't mesh. He has no personality except generic "I'm polite, and I will do my best", and this makes it even worse.

He slaps a few 8 year old hands on his way to the ring, but he gets nearly zero reaction upon entrances. Nobody cares about the generic guy who they've heard happens to enjoy the beach on occasion.

If they really wanted to bring this guy in as a wrestler, they should have built his entire character/presence around the fact that he was in the XFL. Not only would that be a measure of instant depth, it would mold his character and direction immediately. It virtually writes itself.

I dunno, I just see it so painfully every time he makes his way to the ring: nobody gives a shit about him and I expect him to be gone by this time next year because he's never going to get over.

Ever.

I swear his music is partially a knock off of Misirlou.

I wanna piss on Tyler Rek's face. And not in a good, R. Kelly kinda way either

I was at the Smackdown/ECW show in Edmonton. It was funny, every wrestler would come out, the crowd would stand up and cheer and clap. When Reks came out, the crowd just stayed seated and kind of clapped.

Yeah. He's entirely uninteresting.

Cheech and Cloudy do the whole surfer gimmick much better.

He's not. He can at least garner a reaction.

No idea what you're talking about.

O.k. The thing is, Tyler Reks isn't really using it at a gimmick. I kinda hit that in my tirade.

Yeah, Reks really just comes off as a guy who wrestles and just happens to be from Laguna Beach. I think they just wanted to get an extra guy onto the ECW roster but didn't see the value of bringing a New Superstar Initiative guy in without some sort of "gimmick".

When he was first introduced I pegged him as the least likely to get over out of the four superstars introduced in the New Superstar Initiative. His name and his look are basically a newer version of Luther Reigns. The whole package says "We're trying too hard on image." Seriously, Tyler Reks? Is this guy an action figure?

It would have been cool to bring him in as a guy who was totally insecure about the failure of the XFL, feeling that it was partially his fault somehow. Just some crazy guy. He could be a face in his own mind and try his hardest to make ECW 'the best it can be', which would eventually result in some heelish tactics, etc.

Just a thought.

As he is, though, yeah....no reason to care about him whatsoever.

An XFL guy should feel betrayed by Vince and Company. He should feel as if Titan Entertainment failed him -- and thereby failed his family. He should have lost everything when the XFL went down, and now he has nothing but the desire for revenge. A burning hatred fuels his quest to conquer the WWE, take it's greatest title, and throw it the fuck away.

A heel with rage-powered tunnel vision.

But Tyler Reks is nothing.

I never knew Tyler Reks was in the XFL. That could be a hilarious gimmick if done right.

The thing is, from what I've seen on Reks -- he has talent. Maybe not a ring general or the most exciting guy, but he's not being helped by the way he's being used. He's reminding me of Ricky Ortiz right now, which is NOT good. I want to see more from him, but what he really needs is a program. Let Tommy Dreamer mentor him, or something. I don't know, the guy just needs something.

He's Ricky Ortiz Version 2.0. He has potential to get better in the ring, he is not that good right now. I agree about his surfer gimmick being pretty lame. The Sandman was originally a surfer before they made him become himself, which is one of the smartest things Paul Heyman ever did and he's done a lot of good things.

Yeah, Ortiz was also former XFL, making the likeness ever stronger.

Tyler Reks is pratically a bonified jobber with entrance theme music.
