Your schoolyard taunts have convinced me. Jurassic Park's story is incredible. It's got a great cast and they keep you on THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT. Visually it was ahead of it's time when it came out and everything in the movie still holds up today. I think the key there was the right mix of animatronic and CGI, but let's keep in mind how much of the presense of the dinosaurs was done via sound. We heard a T-Rex stomping or heard a raptor in the bushes. Well done, Jurassic Park.

I have a side discussion, apart from comparing the movies...

I love Jurassic Park, and it's a great movie. Still, whenever I watch it I can't help but feel some elusive peice of the puzzle that's missing. I don't know what it is. The characters are great. The suspense and build up to the dinosaurs is great, and the action is perfectly fine. It even has themes and a subtext.
But for some reason I can't place, on the whole the movie seems to be lacking something that keeps it from being an action/adventure masterpeice of Spielberg's in the same way Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark are.

It's always perplexed me. Does anyone else get this?

I think it's every bit as good as Jaws. It's hard to compare it to Raiders because they are so different.

I love Jurassic Park, but I couldn't compare it to Jaws on it's best day. Different strokes for different folks.

I think it's the third act that's a bit lean. The first act is great at introducing the characters and the premise behind the park. It has my favorite scene of the movie with the roundtable discussing the implications of the park.

Then there's the whole second act where the shit hits the fan. The rainstorm, all the stuff with Nedry, and the T-Rex is top notch. Up through this point the movie is mint.

Once the rainstorm ends and everyone catches their breath for a while, I think the movie loses a bit of steam.
The Raptors are great and all, but it goes from A grade science fiction/horror into something a bit more common.

To bring Jaws into it, I think that film benefits from having such a dynamic and exciting final half to it. The first half of the movie is a great horror movie in it's own, then it shifts into this terrifying adventure where the characters are on the high seas. Plus it ends in a way I find entirely more satisfying. It just is a better overall experience to me, and never lets up.

I voted Jurassic Park because I was excited that a movie I've seen is on here

probably shouldn't count though since I haven't seen Taxi Driver

In all fairness I haven't seen Jaws since I was like 10. I can see what you're saying about the slowdown after the rainstorm in Jurassic Park. I think it's more or less necessary. We get Grant's theory as to why everything is going on and we see the Raptors for the first time. That's kind of a necessary warm-up to the kitchen scene.

If I dislike anything about Jurassic Park it's the T-Rex ending. I get that it fits with Malcolms theory of "life finding a way" but at the same time it feels unusual for the heros not to shoot the raptors themselves. I guess what I actually dislike is that nobody sees the T-Rex just wandering in out of nowhere.

Still haven't seen Taxi Driver.

I love Jurassic Park though. One of my favourites. The music, the sound effects, the visual effects, not to mention the story and action...top notch stuff.

It always bugged me that the sun was out during the final conflict in Jurassic Park. Not necessarily a bad thing but compared to the stuff in the rain the previous night, it just doesn't grab you.

Jurassic Park.

I watched Taxi Driver last night for the first time and I am going to review it in the other movie thread, but it's just not my kind of movie at all. I really can't knock the film too much. Great directing, very detail oriented, great acting, great setting and the story was well written. It was just too slow for my taste.

Jurassic Park I can watch whenever it is on. Fun movie with loads of good action and adventure.

You should encourage pirating and include torrent links so that people who haven't seen one of the movies can illegally pirate it and watch it so that they can vote.

My statement was made in jest.

However, your assessment of lazy still holds true, as I actually do have a copy of Taxi Driver, and have had it for over a year, but have not watched it. :$
