OK.. Discuss the best and worst TV Spinoffs

I gotta go with Frasier off the bat as it was a damn good spinoff of Cheers and lasted about as long

Best: King of Queens was pretty good.

Worst: Joey. I hated friends and the Joey spin off was terrible too.

My favourites would probably be Daria, Law and Order: SVU, and the Colbert Report.

At the risk of sounding DAMN iNATOR-esque, Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego was really upsetting to me.

Happy Days (Which itself was a spinoff from Love, American Style) had several spinoffs:

Laverne & Shirley

Mork & Mindy

Joanie Loves Chachi

The Jeffersons were a great spinoff of All In The Family

However they had some other spinoffs that were bad such as Gloria, Archie's Place and Maude

Law and Order SVU is a fantastic spinoff as well

Saved By The Bell

Saved by the Bell isn't really a "spin off".. They just made some character changes and storyline rewrites from "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" (e.g. moving the school from like Ohio to Cali) when NBC bought it from Disney..

Supreme Olajuwon
09-29-2009, 07:15 PM
They took characters from the old show, put them in a new setting, and gave the show a different name. That's pretty much the definition of a spin off.

The majority of mine are cartoons from when I was a kid. These are all what I consider to be good spin-offs.

Freakazoid! and Pinky and The Brain. (Animaniacs)

Taz-Mania and Tiny Toon Adventures. (Looney Tunes)

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. (The Super Mario Bros. Super Show)

Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, The Powerpuff Girls and Courage the Cowardly Dog. (What a Cartoon! Show)

Porridge and Open All Hours. (Seven of One)

Rab C. Nesbitt. (Naked Video)

Phoenix Nights and Max & Paddy's Road to Nowhere. (That Peter Kay Thing)

I quite like Criminal Intent over SVU - the earlier seasons, anyway. As they progressed I'd say they switched.

Not sure about this Trial by Jury and Law and Order: UK business, though. Although to be fair, I haven't ever watched either. Just the premises alone bother me I guess. Can UK cops even carry guns? I thought they couldn't. It has been years since I last watched 'The Bill'.

Oh also Torchwood was fucking horrible.

09-29-2009, 09:02 PM
Also I don't really care for either CSI spin-off. If I had to pick one that was slightly less mediocre than the other, I would probably say New York over Miami, but only because David Caruso bothers me. NYPD Blue flashbacks. Traumatising stuff.

mitchables
09-29-2009, 09:03 PM
ALSO The Critic was not a spin-off of the Simpsons, it was just created by two of its writers. Completely independent show.

Best: Frasier, NCIS, Angel, Diff'rent World

Worst: Trapper John M.D., new Knight Rider

Not really.. A spin off is taking a character (or characters) and doing that.. They pretty much just revamped the show with a mostly new cast, making Zack the star instead of Ms. Bliss.. Saved By the Bell the College Years or Saved by the Bell The New class are spin offs..

Lone Gunmen from X Files was just a really terrible idea and I guess 9/11 didnt help any.

That 80s Show was a pretty lame attempt. Though I don't know if that can technically be called a spin-off.

Not spin-offs. what a Cartoon! was designed to give those shows some exposure and to test the waters for the audience. In fact only one of those shows is a spin-off. I Am Weasel! is a spin off of Cow and Chicken.

Here's my summary of what I saw of KoQ: "I'm a fat fuck with an unbelieveably hot wife that's way too good for me. Now LAUGH Mutherfuckers!"

That's pretty much the premise behind almost all US sitcoms along with the fat guy being a moron. If it's not, it's usually a show that originated elsewhere.

Frasier is the exception and that's one of the reasons I thought it was so good and the best spin-off of an American show by a long way.

Porridge and Open All Hours are great spin-offs but if I go by Shadows post, Porridge and Open All Hours wouldn't count as spin-offs because Seven of One was designed to try out different concepts for a Ronnie Barker sitcom, which gave birth to Porridge and Open All Hours.

Red Dwarf is a spin-off of Son of Cliche, an old radio show. So I'd say that, Frasier, Porridge and Open All Hours (if they count) are the best.

Oh right.

I thought What A Cartoon! was just a show full of cartoon shorts, and those cartoons I listed received a lot of positive feedback from fans so they gave them there own shows. :-\

Kindof like Joey. During Friends, the character was pretty popular so they just gave him his own show after Friends finished. The major difference being that those cartoons were awesome, and Joey simply wasn't.
