Well its official: We have a great Transformers 3 story. The release date is now July 1st 2011. Not 2012. Today is Day One. This morning started with an ILM meeting for five hours in San Francisco. Currently I'm flying with writer Ehren Kruger to Rhode Island to talk to Hasbro about new characters.

Actually Fox's reps are denying that as rumor. Yeah... "They would," but it doesn't make since now either. I doubt the franchise will go beyond three movies and a moment like killing Fox's character would have been better served in part 2. Doing something like that in the last movie would feel like a 'stunt' plot point.

I've loved transformers hard and longer than you ever have. I just hate how they have let themselves go.
#1: You can't love TF longer than me if we both enjoyed it at the same fucking time. I was alive to see it on TV just like you, genius. And how is that a measurement of 'fan-love' anyway? Somebody introduced to the franchise just a year ago could love it just as much as you or me.
#2: Whether you love it harder is subjection. Why even say that? 'Cause you have a TF avy? C'mon, BDC.
#3: Who let what go? TF has been under several teams of management over the years. You can't honestly believe the same group has been making decisions for all of it's media. Also, TF is alive and very well. Hasbro killed last year with the RotF media blitz, just like it did with the first movie, just as they did with the various (not-so-great) anime series. You or me may not like it's various incarnations but that doesn't change it's ongoing success. They're handling it perfectly fine.
Go pop in a G1 DVD and enjoy 'story' there.

The first live-action Transformers was good; not great. It got way too cluttered at the end, and Megatron was sort of done horribly. The sequel made me regret life.

It's giant robots beating the shit out of one another, with lots of explosions in the background. BDC, I would argue that anyone who DOESN'T like these movies is a fag.
Honestly, I think people expect too much out of these blockbuster action movies. Sure it's a bonus when it has a great story, like Dark Knight and Iron Man, but to expect that everytime is just silly. You can usually tell from the trailers what you are going to get, and if you can't just relax and enjoy it for what it is, then go read a fucking book instead, you artsy littile gaylord.

C'mon Fignuts. I agree with you that the first movie should be enjoyable to anyone with a pulse that isn't too pretentious, but the second was fairly awful. I can't in good conscience lump them together in the same category.
I was one of the biggest advocates of the first during these debates on here, and I went into the second movie with the same realistic expectations. I had a good time because I was with friends, but I will never see that movie again.

Transformer 2's numbers are thanks largely in part to the first movie. That movie was well recieved, especially as time went on in video format.
2 sucked, and most people seemed to think so. Part 3 will do significantly worse
parkmania
01-15-2010, 06:49 PM
The biggest problem I have with the live action movies is that during the fights its difficult to tell who's fighting who and who's winning. This was better in #2 than #1, but it still needs work, IMHO.
Kalyx triaD
01-15-2010, 06:55 PM
I think it's a double edge sword. In TF1 the fights were so closely shot to better integrate with the live action sets, that we're humans caught up in their crazy war. If they were to stage the fights traditionally, people would have complained that there's too much focus on CGI and it's some Pixar effort. The gamble proved too chaotic, however, and people went at it.
In TF2, there's less effort to integrate with the live sets and actors as they focused more on backed up, full view shots of the robots and the fighting. This actually killed it for me, and the scenes of the TFs were so obviously 2nd unit shots with no real world interaction (compare BB vs Barricade in TF to Prime vs Megatron/Fallen, one tries to put their fight in our world the other is straight videogames).
How the fights and the robots are presented is a delicate line.
Jeritron
01-15-2010, 06:58 PM
That's exactly why the second film was so much worse than the first. That type of thought put into robot fights and not the fundamental elements of a good film
Kalyx triaD
01-15-2010, 07:07 PM
For TF3 I'd go back to the style of robot/real world integration. Like scenes in TF1 where Prime carries Mikaela to Sam's window, how seamless and subtly awesome that was, needs to come back. Barricade interrogating Sam in the junkyard, pounding that car Sam was on - fucking awesome. TF2 doesn't even attempt scenes like this. And yes, that means shooting the action TF1 style, barely keeping up with giant, impossibly fast alien robots.

Michael Bay says he's been scouting locations in Chicago, Detroit and Washington, D.C., for the third film, and once again he hints it'll be more introspective. "The script is feeling very different than the other two," he says.
I liked TF1 and TF2 about the same tbh. Will also probably be the case with the third one.
I personally don't understand all the hate that TF2 gets; especially when compared to TF1. TF1 had way too much bullshit that bogged down the story for me. All the crap with the parents and the entire scene where the Autobots are "hiding" in Sam's yard; terrible. There were a few good action sequences and some nice interactions between the Transformers, but overall I felt it was lacking what I came to see: robots beating the shit out of one another.
TF2 gave us all the action we could want. From the opening scene up until the last battle, the entire film is almost nothing but Transformers fighting and chasing each other. But that's the fucking point for me. I didn't come to see Oscar worthy performances or "The Wire"-like intricate storytelling. I came to see a fight. A big fucking fight. And that's what they gave me. It didn't have all the way-too-close shots that TF1 had; it backed up the camera and gave a wide view of the action, which was incredible to say the least.
I'm a big fan of TF2 and I still enjoy watching it now. Hopefully TF3 will be even better.

James Avery, who was known as Uncle Phil on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air will reportedly voice new Autobot, Silverbolt in T3. Take this with a grain of salt, as it would be the first word of official casting (minus regulars Shia, Fox, and Cullen).
James Avery has lent his voice to TMNT's (80's) Shredder, and James "War Machine" Rhode's Spider-Man (Fox Kids) cameo.
Silverbolt is remembered as the gentlemen to a fault Maximal from Beast Wars, who's cheesy, Captain Marvel-like heroics annoyed even his own teammates.
Filming will kick off in Spring (perhaps May).

Remember Shia's accident back in 2008? We only ever heard his hand was "heavily injured". Shia gets in detail in GQ:
"And I'm so upset, man. I'm so angry," he tells GQ. "Because this accident was not caused by me. I got hit. I had a green. This [expletive] ran a red light. And he flipped my truck, and he shoveled it on my hand. And my fingers are in the street ... They're in the street, they're off, they're under the truck door, man. It would clash with Bay's style. If people were confused at the action before, multiply that with forced 3D visuals. Then people will have something new to bitch about.
If Bay sincerely wanted to film it in 3D, he should have started right after RotF. You can't rush it or put finished work through a conversion process, it is noticeable.

Shia LaBeouf told The Associated Press that Transformers 3 "brings the heart back to the franchise." He starts working on the third installment on Tuesday.
The new script restores a human element that got lost in the second movie, LaBeouf said. "When I saw the second movie, I wasn't impressed with what we did," LaBeouf said at the Cannes Film Festival. "There were some really wild stunts in it, but the heart was gone."
Michael Bay returns for the third time as director of the science-fiction franchise, which centers on dueling races of giant robots that bring their war to Earth. The next movie will have what the last one lacked - a sense of human consequences, LaBeouf said.
On the second movie, "we got lost. We tried to get bigger. It's what happens to sequels. It's like, how do you top the first one? You've got to go bigger," LaBeouf said. "Mike went so big that it became too big, and I think you lost the anchor of the movie. ... You lost a bit of the relationships. Unless you have those relationships, then the movie doesn't matter. Then it's just a bunch of robots fighting each other."
With "Transformers 3," the toll of the robot war will be grave for our planet, LaBeouf said.
"There's going to be a lot of death, human death. This time, they're targeting humans," LaBeouf said. "It's going to be the craziest action movie ever made, or we failed."
Transformers 3 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2011.

If I know Bay's regimen, filming starts in two hours. Also, the new show Transformers: Prime returns Peter Cullen to TV as Optimus Prime. TF movie writers, Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci will act as showrunners, which leads me to believe this show will a) be awesome and b) canon. But an interesting tidbit is the shows Hasbro is launching around the TF CGI 'toon, which includes a My Little Pony reboot, a new GI Joe cartoon, a revived Fraggle Rock show, and Pound Puppies. For some of us this almost recreates an old Saturday morning block on the head. Hasbro's new kid's channel is even still cruising for some shows, so until it can produce new content it will air oldschool TF and GI Joe cartoons in what is sounding like the greatest channel ever.
Did You Know?:
They can't show TF toy commercials during a TF cartoon programming. This is a government regulation (one I'm sure I seen broken several times over... must be new).

This makes me mad on so many levels. Most importantly the level of this is the transformers, let them fight it out, and get the human element the fuck out of the movie.
They did that in part 2. People didn't like it.

Relatively new site GeekWeek broke the scoop last Friday, and Deadline seems to be confirming that Victoria's Secret model (and Jason Statham girlfriend) 23-year-old Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is the frontrunner to replace the departing Megan Fox in Michael Bay's Transformers 3. According to Deadline's Mike Fleming, Huntington-Whiteley was among the shortlist of three relatively new women to the movie business including Sarah Wright and Brooklyn Decker, the latter being a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model who is appearing in Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston's 2011 romantic comedy Just Go WIth It.
Later in the day, their story was amended to say that Huntington-Whitely, who has absolutely no acting experience except for what she does on the runway during Victoria's Secret Fashion Shows, has gotten the role as long as things don't fall apart in negotiations.
Just caught this news tidbit and I figured I'd post it here. Good to see they're looking at skilled actresses for the part. And here I was playing it safe, thinking they were casting a body...

Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Jaws, The Dark Knight, and to a lesser extent movies like Iron Man are great blockbusters.
I don't know where this whole notion of a movie being a blockbuster meaning it doesn't have to be very good came from. It seems like lowered expectations, or flat out brainwashing. I can't count the times I hear the term "mindless fun" thrown around. True, it doesn't have to be profound, but it also doesn't mean it can't be a respectable film.
I think it's a bit of a lame excuse.

I actaully feel the same about the new Karate Kid. "Duh, I know lets make a movie called Karate Kid only this time lets make it set in China, teach the kid kung fu cause that is a kind of karate, and lets get Jackie Chan and Will Smith's kid and hype the shit out of it. That will sell tickets!"
No, it is just lazy. What is next? A remake of Top Gun staring the kid from Twilight that is just a flimsy story barely connecting crazy dog fight to exploding the pentagon to crazy dog fight?
Jeritron
05-27-2010, 10:35 AM
The biggest problem I had with the second movie wasn't even how bad it was, it was the reason why it was so bad. Let me explain.
The plot is all over the place. It takes dozens of turns, and it's written and directed so poorly that the narrative descends into a downward spiral of incoherence and nonsense. It's all over the place. On top of that there is so much crap going on, that it becomes an assault on the senses and none of it means anything.
But that's not even what's most troubling. If it were a case of them genuinely trying to tell a certain story they set out to tell, and getting lost along the way and running into those problems, I'd at least respect the effort. It'd be an artistic failure.
It's not though. It was written that way to work in as many different robot characters and action setpeices as possible. I don't know how anyone could even attempt to argue against that. The movie is a fucking mess because of poor priorities.

Yeah, but those aren't the rule. I see what you're saying, but it's usually several seasons between blockbuster franchises. Even if you're lucky enough to get a string of them (Star Wars, Raiders, most likely Batman), they're not the norm and it's likely to be a while before the next quality blockbuster comes out.
But, I mean, honestly, I got what I wanted out of Transformers. I understand Becker's gripe, and it's his right to bitch if he wants, but this was a movie where I expected "blockbuster" in a more pejorative sense, and still lined up to see it opening weekend. Transformers was rarely a deep franchise, and while this was probably a shallower experience than even the cartoon and such, it was still a fun experience. Mindless fun should never be an excuse to call a bad movie good, but it can certainly justify an enjoyable experience.
That being said, I dislike the idea of people with little or no love for a franchise being put in charge of it and then starts dicking around. Transformers is kind of a fringe example, but it is an example.
Still, I'm not watching Transformers for elaborate stories. I'm watching it to see giant robots wreck shit. One can enjoy movies that are mindless fun and still enjoy good plots and characterisation elsewhere.

nice post. i actually thought the first half of the first movie was watchable. then, a lot of what i like to (possibly mistakenly) call plotholes start to set in. plain stupidity is probably more accurate. for one thing, i remember thinking that the girl - she would have been dead. running underfoot of giant, killer robots like she's some fuckin' wide reciever. and then another particularly assinine scene that comes to mind was where the boy - the lead character - he was all disappointed and shit with the girl possibly having some sort of small-time criminal record - acting like he's not sure if he wansta fuck her now. i mean c'mon :nono:

There are several new robots, which I've played during filming but I can't give details for obvious reasons. I do feel the storyline for TF3 is the most intriguing one in the series, so far. It's an area I'm personally very interested in and find the history fascinating. Anyone who's read The Pilgrim will know about these associated subjects. Having spent a part of my life in the military and in the more esoteric areas of intelligence work myself, I find the back-story for this one to be really cool. Also, the cast is just amazing! I've already worked with Frances McDormand and I was blown away with her good humor and down-to-earth approach to the size and scope of the project. Obviously working with both Shia and Josh is always a real honor and joy and I must give a shout-out to Harry Humphries and his SEAL team boys, who really bring the heat.

Replying to a thread at Shoot For The Edit, Nelson hints that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is Carly on Transformers 3.
“Thread: Every Little Girl Should Be Told That She's Pretty, Even if She's Not.
Nelson: I personally like Carly, I mean, Rosie.“
Carly was a G1 character.
Also:
Though Bay keeps his ''Transformers 3'' story line close to the vest, he did reveal the Chicago footage ''is at the very end of the movie and the city is under alien attack, so it's very critical and important to the film's climax.''
The scene shot Monday between Michigan and Wabash focused on ''a number of base jumpers who are part of Josh Duhamel's unit. The heroes in this movie have very few people coming to help them this time. I like to think of it as the 'Black Hawk Down' version of 'Transformers' -- it's much more intimate in terms of what's happening.
''Something very bad has happened to America -- and this is at the very end of the movie.''

On the carpet, Bay also briefly touched on two new alien bots set to debut in "Dark of the Moon." "Sentinel Prime is great. He's great," he said. "I can't tell you anything else, other than he's great."
And about the villain Shockwave, Bay say, "He's bad," adding that compared to Megatron, "He's got a much bigger gun [and is] a little bit more vicious."
Though Bay is certain he's got a winner on his hands, the director maintained that "Dark of the Moon" will be his final "Transformers" film. "It does have an end, yes," he said. "Because I am finished doing this."

I figure they know 2 was poorly received, and they are making a point to improve on the sequel.

Not to mention the factors from last time didn't harm the production this time. Not that people ever gave a shit about why it went down that way.
Rather not here criticism from ducks who wrote off the series anyway. You hate Bayformers, that's fine, but why are you here? This I ask to anyone who have nothing but hate for the movie series. Get a life.

Nice knee jerk fan boy reaction Kalyx.
Also I'm here because I know I'm going to see it because it will exist and my inner fan boy won't let me not watch it.

Then the jokes on you. You'll never catch me sucked into something I diss on a regular then watch it 'just cause'. Never understood that. Bunch of dudes in the VG forum just like that too. "I'll bad mouth it for a while to be hip and critical then buckle and buy the game, I'll even invite the guy I riffed on for liking the same game to be ironic."
No bitch, I'm playing with actual fans, see ya later. Huzzah!

Kalyx, the reason you never do that is because you do mental gymnastics to tell yourself it is ok, and everyone who talks bad about it isn't true fan.
*Also I didn't spend money on seeing it, so deal with it, noob.

I was there as well. It's quite the large disaster, if so. I believe it's a huge battle based on the amount of debris and the size of the set.
There was a SWAT team too, for what that's worth.

Loved the first one. Never followed the series, so I went in with zero expectations, and enjoyed it immensely.
Disliked the second for a plethora of reasons, the two big ones being the action sequences were too abundant and the story just zipped on through with little time to catch up.
I don't think that Bay can make the 3rd one any worse than its predecessor. So, I expect an at least on par threequel, but I'm hoping for something like the first one. Visually, it looks amazing per usual.

It must be “add some illustrious vocal credits to your summer blockbuster" week. Just a day after Warner Bros. announced that Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush would be providing the voice of Tomar-Re in Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern movie, Paramount let it be known that the iconic Leonard Nimoy would handle the vocal chores for the robot Sentinel Prime in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
Sentinel Prime is the “ancestor” of Transformers “good guy” autobot Optimus Prime. In Dark of the Moon the wreckage of Sentinel Prime is found on the moon by the Apollo 11 Astronauts and brought to Earth where he adopts the vehicle disguise of a Rosenbauer fire truck.
Nimoy, who is most famous for his role as Mr. Spock in Star Trek, is no stranger to the Transformers universe. In 1986 he provided the voice of Galvatron in Transformers: The Movie.

The quotations add an air of ridicule to the Transformers story. Not sure I dig it.
Good to see Nimoy back in the franchise.

Aaaaaaand as it turns out Spielberg ordered Megan Fox's firing. He didn't like how Fox described Bay in interviews and he had put off production just as they were starting (we even had pics of her on set).
