View Full Version : Would a Trial Series work to get over young talent in WWE?

In Pro Wrestling NOAH in Japan some of the younger wrestlers face off the established stars in a "trial series". They don't necessarily win all of their matches but they are supposed to grow as a wrestler and get over with the crowd for their "fighting spirit" and whatnot.
So, would this type of thing work in getting over younger talent in WWE? Say for example, Evan Bourne goes through a 5 match Trial Series spaced out over the course of 6-8 weeks of Raw. His opponents would be: Randy Orton, The Miz, MVP, Chris Jericho, HHH.
Again, the goal in this would be to get Bourne over regardless of how many matches in the series he won, without him being squashed in any of his matches, or without the highest tier guys he wrestles looking too weak. So, Bourne could definitely get in alot of offense against his opponents, but he CAN be beaten cleanly and decisively (which does not equal a squash at all)

Also, Miz might be a bad example of established talent. Replace him with Cena, HBK, Mark Henry or someone that's been around and established longer.

That's obviously a good idea. Thing is even if WWE decided to do that, they don't know how to OR care to know how to. They make too much money to care right now.

Using Mid-Card wrestlers would probably work a lot better. Any new comer will lose every single one of those matches. Maybe throw a top tier guy in for his last match.

It's a great idea, and I actually suggested a similar idea to this a few years ago (i.e. a prolonged "best of 7 series" tournament with numerous wrestlers).
For example - in the 1st round or something, a guy like Triple H could feud against Evan Bourne. Even though Triple H can win the series 4-1 or whatever, all/most of the matches can be closely contested (which would help get a guy like Bourne over). Furthermore - even if Bourne loses in 5, even giving him that one CLEAN victory over a guy like Triple H would do wonders for his career......and give him some credibility.

As long as it's not some stupid crap like Brawl For All was, I don't see why it wouldn't.

That sounds pretty good. Would pretty much write a guy's storyline for a few weeks, while getting him over. It's simple, and it'd work.

I'm thinking that the WWE could even turn this into a theme. Give a guy like Ted DiBiase a "Trial Series," and use it to boost his credibility. Then a few months later, have another guy get put in a "Trial Series" to see where he is at. It could be a referencing point for guys later on in their careers.
You could make the "Trial Series" to mid-carders what something like "Hell in a Cell" is for blood feuds.

The only problem really, and it's actually kind of a blessing in disguise, with this concept, is that there are plenty of low or mid-card level guys who get the chance to shine on WWE Superstars, where they might not even grab a Dark Match or curtain jerker match 90% of the time on their respective brand's show.
Think about it: When was the last time you saw Tyler Reks ACTUALLY wrestle consecutive weeks on ECW? (That's just one of many un-/under-utilized superstar examples I could give).
But still sounds like a pretty good idea other than that.

Also, consider that there would only be perhaps 1-3 of these a year and that they would be spaced out. Having them too often and for just anybody would undermine the goal of this.

it does have its ups and downs but it is generally a good idea

Problem is with the examples of performers you've given is that it's likely that only Miz and MVP lose to Bourne whereas the others win, making the losers look weak and Bourne not good enough to walk with the big guys.

The absolute BEST and successful example that I can think of, was when Edge/Christian faced off against the Hardy's in the late 90's during the Terri Runnels invitational.
Both tag teams went over BIG TIME after they had a series of consecutive 5 star quality matches......on RAW.
Imagine that - a bunch of young promising kids getting ample TV time on the MAIN show which allowed them to get over......go figure.

That would be a great idea for ECW I think.

I also think the WWE should do more of the "Best of" series. When you have two guys who are feuding, and they are talented enough workers to evolve their matches to tell a continuous story -- it could really help two guys shine.

You don't have to win to get over.

Don't ever use the word "Mark Henry" and "Talent" in the same sentence without quotation marks around it.

1) They weren't in the same sentence
2) Get over it
