You can't do the main story missions, but you can do side missions which there are 4354365365 of. Most of them are as fun as main story missions. You also pretty much only need to do one to earn enough respect.

true? I have been driving on the wrong side of the road the whole time to fill my respect bar.

Yeah, just do a side mission, and you are good.

lol seriously you've been doing that for it? :'( just do the activities. you get good rewards if you play it to high levels too. like if you do drug trafficking at the airport to level 6 you get an awesome shotgun with unlimited ammo and whatnot.
i am playing the shit out of this game recently :'( annoying thing is it crashes on me a lot. yeah that's a point. save your game a lot.

This is the most terrible thing ever. Having a whole sandbox to explore, and spending a little time doing that before doing a mission? Shit, this sucks.

Well think if the all you could before a mission was drive on the wrong side of the road and cause near-misses would you think that would be a fun thing to do for 30 minutes?

No, I don't. Good thing that's not even remotely true, even without the minigames.
If you don't like doing the same thing over and over again in a game that doesn't require it, who's to blame that you're not having fun doing that same thing over and over again?

Yes but when I made this thread thats was the only thing I saw that could raise your bar fast with out going on a rampage.
Yes I do the activities now but I shouldn't be forced too.
Games shouldn't MAKE you do anything. They are GAMES; they are meant for enjoyment.
The logic is ass backwards too. You co-run a gang but you don't have enough respect to save your dying partner in a hospital?

it's not really a big deal man. plus like i said the rewards you get for doing it, as well as the respect, make it worthwhile.

plus the activities are sometimes more fun than the missions anyway.

If games shouldn't make you do anything then why the fuck are you moaning about not being able to do missions in which you have to do what the game says?

the game doesn't make you do anything. This is a game made for enjoyment. And you can enjoy it without earning respect, though odds are most of the things you do for fun will get you respect.
And seriously, is this your first sandbox ever? If you're bitching about the mission where you save one of your buddies as illogical, you've either never played a sandbox style game before or are selectively looking for a reason to bitch. Come on now.

I just like running around tasing people. Especially in co-op. Even with friendly fire off, they go down.
And with the DLC and unlimited RPG ammo, I can launch them (or myself) off a building in a flaming mess. Though the fire damage from a friendly RPG can still kill you....not to mention falling damage if you haven't done base jumping.

Its not my first sandbox that's why I don't feel like exploring. Plus you are missing what I was saying.......If my friend who co-runs a gang with me is dying in a hospital and a bunch of Ronin want him dead. I can't save him from dying at the current time because I don't have enough respect.
It is ass-backwards to me because how can you run a huge gang and not be able to put work in for it? The game concept would work perfectly if you played as the guy that broke you out not as a leader of the gang.
If games shouldn't make you do anything then why the fuck are you moaning about not being able to do missions in which you have to do what the game says?I thought I made it clear that I wanted to do missions.....also missions are the point of the game

one thing i don't like about recent sandbox games is the way they actually have a satnav. like i know they used to have a mini map but it didn't inform you of every turn so you actually had to get to know the city a bit. now it feels like i spend half my time just staring at the shitty 2d little map saying which turn i should take instead of appreciating the actual things going on as i drive along. stillwater is a bit condensed though compared to san andreas i suppose.
seriously though i knew san andreas and vice city as if i actually lived there :'(

Then don't. But you're still not as limited as you're complaining you are.

No, I commented on that. That's exactly why I suggested this might be your first sandbox, because you always have to swallow some degree of this kind of behaviour. Every Sandbox game has some sort of hoops for the player to jump through, and this is no better nor worse than the others.
I'd also point out that there is no threat until you've earned the respect to play the mission. Your buddy doesn't die if you don't get inside due to lack of respect. If you're that bothered, pretend it's just a giant glashing wall or any other stupid, arbitrary barrier, since apparently, you didn't whine about those in other games.
It is ass-backwards to me because how can you run a huge gang and not be able to put work in for it? The game concept would work perfectly if you played as the guy that broke you out not as a leader of the gang.
You're a a guy who spent years in a coma, has come back, and resurrected the Saints practically single-handedly. Carlos was about your only connection, and he's a virtual nobody. You have to work just to get Pierce, Dex, and Shaundi on your team. You're no longer a franchise, and the game goes out of its way to remind you of that. The Saints were all but wiped out in the wake of Ultor's campaign.
And I don't think I should have had to explain all that, because it's all in the game. But it's not as bass ackwards as you play it up to be. but the crux of it is you're still reading too much into it.
I thought I made it clear that I wanted to do missions.....also missions are the point of the game
That really wasn't his point. You want freedom, but you're bemoaning that you can't play the least free element of the game without doing something else first.
Besides, if you think the missions are the point of the game, I'm not sure you get the genre. And you certainly don't get Saints Row 2. The game sold itself on the wild ass shit you can do in it. The missions expand the plot, which is kind of amusing, but they know most people ain't playing it for a deep story experience.

Missions OR levels are the point of almost any game. I am playing this game almost entirely because of the missions. Not to drive around and have people have sex in the back of my slow car.
This thread basically boils down to me saying "I don't like this aspect of the game"
and you saying "No you should enjoy this aspect of the game"

Play it co-op man. That makes the game much more fun.
Or, plug in some cheat codes and play it with super explosions.
It's an open world, don't drive past it.
