There are reports circulating that major changes could be coming for the ECW brand of WWE in 2010. According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com, the ‘ECW’ letters may soon be gone.
WWE and SyFy have had meetings in recent weeks regarding the future of the ECW brand. WWE would keep the timeslot but a major re-branding is apparently in the works. Stay tuned for more updates!

I would actually call it 'Velocity' (with green color scheme) IF the WWE went ahead with my original idea and turned the entire show into a haven for
-Cruiserweights
-A women's division consisting of women that wrestler
-Oversized hosses with no wrestling talent (i.e. Khali, Henry).
It would be a 'niche'd' show that would target entirely different demographics from the main shows (RAW and SD).

This is the first I've heard of this rumour. :-\
But I've always thought that a name change would help the 3rd Brand, because let's be honest, there is absolutly nothing "Extreme" about ECW now.
I've always thought that if they did change the name of ECW, they couldn't always just change the "E" in ECW to mean "Entertaining". Which I think after creating a new belt with giant letters on the front that spell out ECW, is the only way to go if they don't want to waste money on creating an expensive belt, only to use it for just over a year now. :-\
But if they want to get rid of the letters "E", "C" and "W" altogether, then they'll probably not bother making a new name for it but revive some old show like Heat or Velocity and make that the new name/brand. Another thing I've always thought might be a good idea.

So an idea being kicked around is to OFFICIALLY make it WWE's minor league. Dunno if it'd replace FCW or what, but the idea would be only non-established guys would be there, even moreso than now (No Christians, Regals, Sheltons, etc....literally a show of solely guys who haven't yet been on Raw or SD)
Could be interesting. Lots of cuts though as people get "promoted". Maybe the annual draft could be just like a real sports event.....where you actually DRAFT the young guys to your brand. I dunno.

According to a reliable source, World Wrestling Entertainment plans to put the ECW brand to rest once and for all in the near future as I noted earlier here on the website. WWE officials have had several meetings with the Syfy network about re-branding WWE’s Tuesday night show.
Both sides are in agreement that WWE’s version of ECW has been a bust and plans are already being made for a new weekly series. While several ideas have been tossed around (including a magazine-style recap show), right now it appears that WWE wants to make the new Tuesday night brand a “WWE minor league” and feature young up-and-coming stars.
WWE relaunched the ECW brand back in 2006 after the undeniable success of the “Rise and Fall of ECW” DVD set and later the ECW One Night Stand Pay-Per-View events. After ECW was relaunched as a brand, it quickly became apparent that WWE had no intention of keeping the elements that made the original ECW special and turned ECW into a watered-down, generic “C” show.

I was just thinking about this.
It makes good marketing sense to change the name from ECW to whatever they are thinking of. The new product is by no means what ECW represented, extreme matches with the most hardcore wrestlers you could see anywhere. By changing the name, they can sell old ECW DVD's, merch, etc... and not dilute the brand any longer.
They have been hyping the current ECW as a place for new and rising superstars, a place where HHH or Undertaker would not even think about stepping into. It fits the WWE style more than the old ECW style, but it's fresh and unique every week because the young guys are hungry to get to the top. They could go with that kind of branding statement (they won't).

I wonder if they made it a true minor league if the ratings would stay as they are now, or if they need the top star like Christian to bring it in. I am not sure to be honest. I would say if they made it special and kick ass they could get away with no stars, and bring those guys to Raw and Smackdown.

From the sounds of it, they are looking to revamp it in such a way that it is basically FCW. To do this, I imagine they would get any good or ready for Raw/SD talent traded off (Christian, Regal, Ryder, Shelton, Hurricane, Goldust, Kozlov, Zeke) and keep everyone else there. They'd probably bring more guys up from FCW as well. The title would remain on the show and there would be no danger of ever seeing it on a PPV again, which is good. More space for the US/IC/Tag.

I actually can see the ECW brand being written off in the next draft (or perhaps a mini draft BEFORE the legit draft, I dunno). Raw and SD take turns selecting everybody off the show...then ECW dies and is rebranded as something else where the FCW guys hone their skills.
The Raw and SD rosters will become hella overcrowded as a result...but it would give them an excuse to cut some guys like Tyler Reks.
From there, maybe every year...or bi-yearly...or something...Raw and SD are allowed to "draft" a couple of superstars from FCW deemed to be ready. I dunno.
Jordan
12-03-2009, 11:10 AM
The truth is you can't have Christain, William Regal, Goldust and Shelton Benjamin on a WWE "farm team" they would have to be traded to Smackdown! or Raw, which I think would be a great idea (Christian and Regal to Smackdown, Goldust and Shelton to Raw).
With that in mind, Syfy wants the 2.0 rating that ECW got when it first started airing, now it's a 1.0. If WWE takes off the ECW "stars" will they at least even keep the 1.0 much less rise above it? The Farm League would have to kick some serious old school ECW type of ass to get that big. And I know FCW does not contain an old school ECW or ROH or WCW or anything feel. It is WWE's farm team and it shows. I don't know how they will succesfully pull that off.

Yeah. Then I'd say bring back the WWE web shows in some capacity. Maybe not in full force, but say 2 matches per brand, post it on WWE.com once a week, gives guys left off that week's main shows a chance to be seen.
So before you go to a live Raw/SD show, before the main show starts you'll get the two "web matches" and a Superstars match (and maybe a local guy in a dark match as well)...so no matter which show to go to you are getting 3 hours. :y:

I like the WWE Underground name. Watching ECW, I actually got the idea "WWE Platinum" or something like that. I don't know if an FCW-style show will work. I mean, from a ratings perspective? I think they should try to make ECW more of a force if they want to get noticed.
Move Jim Ross, Rey Mysterio and R-Truth over, and hope that they take enough of a following and breathe a bit of credibility in. Perhaps The Great Khali as well. To be honest, it also feels that Matt Hardy is getting a bit lost on SmackDown!, as is MVP on RAW. Send those two over there. Perhaps even Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger, as well, since the WWE has apparently "lost interest" in pushing them. Kane has been booked well on SmackDown!, but you could make him a bigger star on Underground. Dare I say it: Have Edge return to the brand, saying that he wants to revolutionise the WWE and its newest show. He can team with Christian over there.
Re-package guys that aren't doing anything and send them there, too. Jimmy Wang Yang, perhaps under a mask, kicking ass. Funaki could be a similar deal. Curt Hawkins isn't doing anything -- a mid-card feud with Zack Ryder could actually be very entertaining. Carlito and Primo could head over and do something more important over there. Well, one or the other.
And for the love of God, make their title a "World Title." That way people will care about them a lot more. Also see if you can give them an extra hour or something. I mean, imagine a proper third brand with the following roster:

I think WWE would be successful if they created a proper third brand, treated as equal to Raw and Smackdown. So go with the WWE Underground concept. Syfy has to give it two hours for this to work.
A few new titles need to be created. I would bring back the WWE Hardcore Title for a mid-card and Cruiserweight, I would make the main event title a little different maybe WWE No Limits Championship.
Just put the current ECW roster on. Keep the idea of using FCW talent as jobbers for new talent. The great thing about ECW is the way it works in one hour, so you have to maintain that feel somehow. While giving more importance to the show than WWE did ECW. Obviously with the Hardcore and Cruiserweight Titles the show is going to be a lot different than Raw or Smackdown! And the No Limits Title is an openweight main event belt. The first roster could be something like...
Christian
William Regal
Edge (when he returns)
Shelton Benjamin
Bryan Danielson
Kaval
Zack Ryder
Goldust
Hurricane
Koslov
Ezeikiel Jackson
Yoshi Tatsu
Tyler Rekks
I would draft
Kane from Smackdown!
R-Truth from Smackdown!
Ted Diabiase from Raw
Evan Bourne from Raw
With a young roster like that it would take a while for it to become popular but I think it could be pretty amazing as well. They could do house shows and all of that, it would make a ton of money.
