View Full Version : RIP Eddie 'Umaga' Fatu

CSL

Edward Fatu, 36, is hospitalized in Houston and in what was described as life threatening condition by a long-time friend.

His family was told to come into town as quickly as possible.

Details are sketchy at this point but he apparently fell asleep last night while watching television, and several hours later, his wife found him not breathing with blood coming out of his nose and he was rushed to the hospital.

Yeah, I checked Wiki as soon as I saw the Kennedy comment and there was nothing. 10 minutes later there was a PWTorch report and he was dead on Wikipedia. All seems to have stemmed from the Kennedy comment. Wiki now says 'suspected drug overdose'. Maybe he's in a bad way? Do people 'say a prayer' for already dead people?

By Ryan Clark on Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 3:28 PM EST

Several wrestlers have posted messages on Twitter regarding the hospitalization and rumored death of former WWE superstar Eddie “Umaga” Fatu. Here’s what some of them are saying:

Ken “Mr. Kennedy” Anderson: “Say a prayer for my boy Umaga”

D’Angelo Dinero / Elijah Burke: “Pope was informed many hours ago of my friend Umaga. Pope will not comment until the family speaks, neither should you. Prayer is key! ~ PHS”

Former WWE star Umaga (Eddie Fatu) was removed from life support earlier this afternoon, reports WWE announcer Jim Ross, who says he spoke with a friend of Fatu's family.

Fatu's official death is expected to be announced this evening. He was on life support at a North Houston hospital after his wife found him unresponsive this morning at his home in Spring, Texas.

Fatu reportedly suffered a massive heart attack. We reported originally that Fatu was found bleeding from his mouth and nose when he was found in his home.

The wording sucks, but I don't find it to be malicious at all. I suppose they could've said "Fatu last appeared in the WWE at the Extreme Rules PPV" or something, but I don't think they meant any harm by it.

Now if they have CM Punk come out next week and tell us that he tried to tell Umaga to stop doing drugs and now he's dead, then yeah, that would be in bad taste.

CWK
12-04-2009, 06:57 PM
How is this inappropriate in the least? They're just saying that he wasn't currently working for the company.

Just the way they said it "He was terminated from his contract on June 11, 2009." That sounds so cold.

How about, "Umaga last performed with WWE until June of this year and was most recently on an independent wrestling tour of Australia, we send our condolences to his family."

That would have been much more professional and compassionate.

XCaliber
12-04-2009, 07:01 PM
It's ridiculous that they felt that they had to add the actual date they might as well have taken it a step further and have Vince McMahon come out and say "I didn't do it he screwed himself!" it makes them look more guitly if anything.

Well actually, in defense of that. i remember when Vince showed a soft side and showed compassion by letting Kurt Angle out of his deal back in 2006 when Kurt was in real bad shape.

Its good that Kurt pulled the wool over Vince's eyes though on that one because Vince deserved it. He screwed over so many other people.

They publicly announce everyone's wellness policy suspensions. You really aren't indicating to me how telling everyone that he didn't work there at the time of his death is disrespectful.

Also, it isn't really the WWE's fault they would put something like that up there. When a wrestler dies, who is the first person Nancy Graces calls. The WWE. Writing when he stopping working for the company is just answering a question everyone is already going to ask.

I really see no problem here.

WWE dumped Eddie Fatu cos he was a druggie. In fact, I think they sacked him cos he refused the help they offered him. He died (presumably) due to this reason. Why shouldn't they dissassociate themselves with the guy?

Yeah it's sad that the guy has passed at a young age, but WWE/Vince tried to help him, they should not shoulder any blame here. In noting when he left the company they are distancing themselves.

It would have been harse if the sentence read: Mr. Fatu was under contract with WWE at various time periods and most recently performed under the name "Umaga." Mr. Fatu's contract was terminated on June 11, 2009 when he wouldn't accept our offer to help him through the drug addiction that no doubt played a part in his eventual death.

I haven't been paying much attention, but did Umaga get released from WWE or is he still under contract?

People's deaths just come out of nowhere. Seriously....this is a shocker.

Umaga was released a while ago. If I remember correctly, he refused rehab.

He was recently working the Hulkamania tour in Australia. As freaky as it is, his last opponent was Kennedy.

Kennedy is fucking cursed.

In regards to the debate about is it respectful to post the release date or not. http://www.wwe.com/ Currently on the WWE mainpage, the top story "UMAGA PASSES" wait for the auto story scroll thing to go to the next story "DISRESPECTING THE DEADMAN"

That's pretty damn crass. Someone in the internet marketing/PR department should be punished.

Umaga was always pretty interesting to watch. Really mobile for a big man. Sad that he got addicted to drugs and passed away at such a young age :(

Everyman must walk the path that is put in front of him. Eddie Fatu took a darker path and had hope and help along the way. Sadly, the help was ignored....
This sucks, but I'm not going to say that I'm really that sad. He had more than one shot to get clean. Yea, sometimes it's just the sins of our pasts one step behind us (like Eddy and Hawk) but other people do not get the chance to get better soon enough.

Rest in peace, Umaga... And thank you.

Im sorry..but..I dont get that at all.

I know he's dead and all, but I could name 40 wrestlers probably who I would have on a list of favorite wrestlers of the last few years ahead of him. He'd be right ahead of Santino and that surfer dude that was on ECW for a while.

Eddie Guerrero.

Maybe Kennedy just shouldn't wrestle wrestlers with the name Eddie, seems like a bad omen for him.

Real shame about Umaga though, i actually enjoyed him while he was in WWE and was actually thinking about him and some of his moves a few days ago, really weird.

Oh for crying out loud. It was an unfortunate coincidence. There have probably been a hundred WWE.com headlines calling the Undertaker the Deadman, it's no more insulting than if an ad for Tombstone pizza popped up on the same website reporting a murder.

You know what I find even more ironic than the fact that Umaga's last match, much like Eddy's was against Kennedy?

Tonight Armando Estrada will wrestle in his final match... and it will be againt Kennedy. :wtf:

Wow, really didnt expect to see this on the front page after a week away. So long Umanga you will be missed.

I was looking forward to him coming back at some point too. I'll be honest I found him really bland for quite a while, but towards the end of his most recent WWE tenure I was really enjoying what he was doing. Like has been said before, given the gimmick he got, he did a lot with it. A great talent.

Theres a store here that sells outdated merchandise and they have a ton of WWE stuff, and one of the items was the huge inflatable Umaga thing that you were supposed to beat up. I almost bought it but they wanted $10 for it and that is about $9 more than what I would pay for it.

Have CM Punk dicuss the evils of drug abuse, using Umaga as an example of why he has to do what he’s doing. The company that employed him even tried to help him, but he was too set in his ways and wouldn’t accept the help because he was blind to reality. The reality is that Umaga is dead. He died because of all of the drugs that he was taking. Punk and Rikishi get some beef due to Punk disrespecting Umaga, so they have a feud, all the while Punk is hyping up the fact that he doesn’t feel safe on SmackDown with Rikishi returning, until a few weeks down the road, the match is signed for the Royal Rumble.

At some point in the match, Punk goes to get a chair, then hits Rikishi, causing the disqualification, and lays him out.

Punk goes on and recaptures the Intercontinental title. Punk defends the title vs. Rikishi, and Rikishi becomes Intercontinental Champion. Punk spends the next several weeks trying to regain the title, culminating in a title shot at WrestleMania. The match is no disqualification. During the match, Luke Gallows comes down to help Punk. Punk steals the victory and wins the title.

I'd just like to point out at this juncture that people who dont take drugs die of heart attacks too.

Can we get off the drugs bandwagon for a second and wait for, i dunno, some scientific proof?
