The blinking red light taunts me while it refuses to give me back my Braveheart blu-ray. This is shaping up to be the worst weekend ever.

I guess your PS3 really doesn't like Mel Gibson.

I can't afford to buy another one and from what I read on Sony's message boards, I would rather not spend $150 to get the thing fixed. Tpww, please help me buy another PS3 :)

You can take mikes PS3 but you will never take his Bravehart DVD!

Please Kane Knight, please fix my Playstation 3. Or help me set an example. Either way.

Kane Knight
12-05-2009, 10:25 PM
Set an example? Are you going to execute your PS3 as a message to the rest to fall in line.

Big Fat Mike
12-05-2009, 10:29 PM
I was hoping that you would be able to write a strongly worded letter to sony accompanied by a picturte of the dismantled ps3. After all, that's what you do best - talk a bunch of shit until people see things your way, correct? That isn't a swipe at your character, I just imagine that particular feature of yours coming in handy at the moment.

Yes, which would mean his PS3 is a jew.

Big Fat Mike
12-05-2009, 10:45 PM
So are you blaming Mel Gibson or the Jews?

Sixx
12-05-2009, 10:57 PM
Jews, as always.

Also, when PS3s die the light blinks yellow, not red. Not sure what the problem is for you though

Word on the street is Requiem is selling his 60GB (backwards compatible) PS3 and accessories.

Mine died like that 4 months ago, fixed it, broke again a couple weeks ago, said fuck it and bought a Slim.

What Would Kevin Do?
12-06-2009, 01:21 AM
I had a run of bad luck with mine once. The original one I had gave me the yellow light after I put a 320 GB harddrive in it. Paid the money, sent it in and got it fixed (apparently the power adapter/supply went bad). New one, installed the harddrive, no problem, but then in a few days (it was a refurb mind you), the discs stopped spinning (probably a bad laser or whatever.) That was in August. Got it back again (it was still under warranty from the first repair), and I've had no problems since.

Same, except mine's an 80 GB. Still BC, but hardware emulation is gone in favor of software.

Does it piss anyone off how easily systems stop working these days?
I was too young back in the days of SNES and N64 and not very in touch with the internet but I don't remember this type of crap happening that often.

Systems are more complicated and have more shit in them than a fucking SNES and N64. They are not just a hollow shell with a motherboard anymore

I've had more problems with my NES back in the day then the PS3 now.

Got a brand new 360 so I hope it lasts me like, forever.

Xero
12-06-2009, 04:28 PM
I went through 3 NESs until I got the toploader.

I've had 2 360s.

And I had two PS2s because it failed, too.

That's still no excuse for shoddy design. Yes, SNES and N64 were a lot simpler, but so was the technology back then. Shouldn't new systems be just as reliable, seeing as the technology for building them has become better also?

One thing I'd note is that when the XBox's 54.X failure rate was "reported," the numbers for even the most reliable system, the Wii was nearly double what the electronics biz considers an acceptable failure rate.

Okay, so those numbers are likely wrong, simply because of the way the poll was done. But the console market really does seem out of step with normal electronics in a lot of ways, including price, marketing, and acceptable hardware.

I think it's more than just "systems are more complicated." I don't disagree that this is a portion of it, but really, there's a lot of other problems that go into it. Not the least of which being the still relatively niche market makes it easier to get away with higher than normal failure rates. As is evidenced by the PS2 last gen and the 360 this gen. Even if the 360's failure rate was only 10%, and in all probability it's much higher, that's most than three times acceptable standard. But there's no recall, no inquiry, and no boycott on any meaningful scale. Most other businesses can't do that.

I have to blow in my NES cartridges to get them to work damnit!

In all seriousness, blowing into your NES cartridge can actually damage it over time. Blowing into it doesn't actually help--as the connector pins get older, it can be harder for them to establish a run with the system. The safest way to get the game to play is to just take it out, put it back in, try again. Repeat. Keep flipping the coin and eventually, it'll turn up heads. The reason blowing into it appears to help is that you're doing the same thing--disengaging the cart and then trying to reconnect--you're just also putting potentially harmful business into your catridge in the process.

The more you know. O:

The Mackem
12-07-2009, 04:14 AM
Yeah I actually know that but it came years after doing it and actually reading the game instructions of one of the games. Essentially, I could have took out the cartrige, sacrificed a virgin and came to the same result but if I tried it first and it worked there would be a whole load less virgins in the world.

.44 Magdalene
12-07-2009, 04:27 AM
It's unfortunate that the whole thing wasn't made clearer, at least for those of us that did believe sacrificing virgins would make the NES play.

Besides the initial batch of NES systems that were defective when it was 1st released in Japan, the top-loader design was meant to be the design for the NES in the US but had to be changed to the VCR/toaster style since no store would want a console after the Atari mess a year earlier.

Ends up the toaster design would over time bend the pins and cause problems which is why its harder to find a non-fixed NES still working compared to the top-loaders.

My next system purchase may be a nex or a used atari lynx. Maybe I'll just buy that new 3-D version of monopoly. I feel like I'm getting kind of old for video games, anyway.

You can never be too old for games. Most of my friends list consist of people aged 40+. :y:

Yeah. Things haven't changed, eh?

Explain?

Apparently, though other companies across the electronics field can keep their products as reliable as in the eighties, there is something about consoles that makes it unrealistic to expect from their manufacturers.

The Mackem
12-08-2009, 04:20 AM
I'm very old fashioned in the sense that I won't buy something that I know has a possibility of breaking through design and not through what I do to it. My brother has went through all kinds of hell with his but he loves his X Box so much that it could break every week and he'd still go back for more. He's forever telling me how this has broke so he's had to borrow the part from somebody else's that they are not using etc. It does seem like they are getting better at making it work but they aren't half 'lucky' that they have brand loyalty like they do. If it was something with more competitors in the market, you'd have to think they'd be dead in the water although in reality they would put more effort into making sure it was perfect first time.

In the end it's no coincidence that the failure rates closely follow how much the companies have riding on the success of their products. Nintendo obviously have the most to lose, if their failure rates were higher they would have a lot more to lose. Sony can absorb the failures slightly better but they need the edge over Microsoft in this area otherwise they would lose more customers to them. Microsoft, I'd expect, are all about lowering their current failure rate as low as possible to make the product more attractive but the fact that they can sustain within what I would call a high failure rate is quite impressive. I think it's fair to say that this due to their marketing, available games and in a sense they must have a remarkable customer service (whether it's turnaround times or whatever).

Kane Knight
12-08-2009, 08:28 AM
Mcrosoft's customer service has been terrible. They're the #2 console only because they were first to market, captured most of the developers, and Sony made dumb decisions. For example, they took an extra year to put BD in. That probably won Blu-Ray the HD war, but it didn't do the PS3 any favors.
