Don't get me wrong, I can recognise that he is a great commentator who knows his shit, it's just that sometimes he is too big of a nerd that his voice just annoys me. He knows everything. It's like he prepares as soon as Smackdown is over until the next Tuesday with pages and pages of notes, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because I wish Lawler would put in as much effort, but sometimes I just think he needs to chill out a bit.
I miss JR :( He's been awesome since moving to Smackdown.

No.
I love Matt Striker.
He's decent at the very least.

I think he is a bit OTT these days. He is good, but trying too hard.

How much of this post is serious?
Pretty cool guy actually, went to a Smackdown taping in 2006 in Columbus, Georgia and I took my daughter with me as she loves wrestling and she wanted to see them enter the building and take pictures of them as they walked in. Well where we were standing, there was a side door to the building and Striker walks out of it right up to the group of us in a suit and says "who would like to be on WWE.com?" there was a camera man with him and some chick who carried release forms. I guess they were doing some fan interaction stuff or something, but it was really cool, Striker was very nice, signed my daughters shirt she was wearing. She really liked that. Layla and Stevie Richards even came out and signed her shirt too. She was just 7 at the time, so that made her year.
Good memories.

Well with JR out I would say that Cole is the best commentator they have, I really can't stand King, and Grisham I really feel bad for him, he's just awful. Striker comes in 2nd to Cole then.

wow that's a first. Maybe somebody should forward that post to Mr. Cole's inbox. That just might convince him to pull the gun out of his mouth.

Love Striker. Definitely one of the best guys on any table right now.
I wish King would put in half the effort.

I love Striker as well but since coming to Smackdown sometimes I think he can be a bit much. I catch myself cringing or eye rolling at some of the fake back stories he sometimes spits.
Still think he is the most creative guy with a headset in a long time.

I know the feeling. The other week he said something along the lines of 'Kanes house was burned to the ground when he was a child, all he could find in tact was the one glove he wears today.'
How about the glove he wore for his first 5 years?

Striker is a bit over the top smart at times but I would rather hear him that "Vintage this, and Vintage that" Cole anyday... Cole was good back in the day, but he is in some SERIOUS Need for new material...

That's what I'm talking about. Just wish he wouldn't go on his little nerdy stories so often. He tries too hard and his voice can be quite overpowering at times. His eyes are creepy too. Also when they do a close up at the announce table he looks like he wants to make sweet love to Todd Grisham.
But don't get me wrong, I don't mind him as a Smackdown commentator, he knows things which is the important thing. He's just a bit much and overeager at times for my taste.

I always thought Striker and Cole actually had pretty good chemistry together.

Striker is pretty good, when he's not going overboard with the nicknames, like The Ultimate Braggart for Jericho. I do like when he does little things for guys who don't have a large career like the Hart Dynasty, like "that screeching guitar in a-minor could only mean one thing" and for Yoshi saying that skater and emo kids like him.

I honestly don't have a problem with Matt Striker but, there are some instances where he can be just a little annoying. There's no denying that he's a great color commentator and he brings a lot of wisdom to the broadcast table. I find him to be very entertaining and knowledgeable but when it comes to commentators, I cannot wait for the returm of the greatest commentator of all-time Jim Ross.

He's WWE's best commentator since Bobby Heenan left and King stopped being heel...... its a nice change for a commentator to actually know the names of moves and provide background information during a match that is of importance

Striker maybe over the top at times, and might try too hard, but I actually like that. Especially against someone like Lawler who acts like he barely even wants to be there. And I do like the fact that he is genuinely interested in the product. It was funy when on ECW he would sing along to Ryders theme.

He's good but has a different style than the rest of the announcers they have on WWE which is why he tends to sound more nerdy or over the top at times. I'd rather have an interesting announcer who knows the moves and some info about wrestlers than a bland or stale commentator.
Its probably more on who he's paired with since he worked the best with Josh Matthews similar to how Cole was the best with JBL's style and Lalwer with JR's style.

This nit-picking is annoying to me. Striker is hands down the best commentator in the WWE, and the only thread we get about him is that he's 'annoying sometimes'? Come on.

Striker also is the only commentator who doesn't hate someone just because he's a heel. Not to say that he's completely a heel himself, but it's refreshing to see that.

I don't think it's a 'nit-pick'. He genuinely annoys me and this aspect of him makes me question whether he is the best there right now. The guy is clearly gifted and no doubt the most knowledgeable, but sometimes the better announcers are the ones that relax more. Sometimes I like to just sit and watch a match without someone constantly yapping on about back stories and home made nicknames, like he's always trying to impress. It's not radio. JR has it down perfectly with his color role IMO.

I stand by loving his nicknames. For example, The Altered Beast is probably the best nickname for Batista ever.
Cole is absolutely the worst. I'd rather hear McMahon on commentary every week.

"You are watching the longest-running, weekly episodic television show in history!"
Yes, and we're also listening to the longest-running, weekly episodic sentence in history.
Longer than "BAHGAWD" or "AUSTIN!" by JR?
Cool King
12-08-2009, 06:41 PM
Well, I wouldn't say those were "weekly episodic".
Yeah, he did say them alot, but not really "weekly episodic".
Also, those aren't sentences. :p

Find that Striker is somewhat refreshing actually as he is one of the few current annoucers that doesn't feel the need to scream on the headset all the damn time.

I love Matt Striker. The guy genuinely wants to be there, and has found a niche that he can master. The guy is still relatively new behind the table, but he just adds so much more. He adds so much to the wrestlers' backstories and such. He knows how to perform while he's in the booth, too.
And that is essentially what you are hearing when you notice there is something different about Striker's commentary. He's not a straight announcer -- he brings a character to the table. He and Todd Grisham have fantastic commentary together, and I hope they don't get split-up again. When JR is ready to return, let him to go to ECW (or whatever the hell it is called), and work with Josh Mathews. I could see those two working well together.

As long as the commentary teams are being discussed here, I just wanna say that I am thoroughly enjoying the work of Josh Matthews and Byron Saxton on ECW. :y:
There's something about Saxton that just blends well. It's like, I know he's new, but he seems like he belongs and has been there for years. Dunno, he just makes things feel familiar to me.
