i am playing my megadrive collection thing on xbox and just running through sonic the hedgehog and i can't believe some of the sly shit it has to beat you. crap just popping up out of nowhere, or like tunnels that send you spinning at a million miles an hour until you fly out and hit something you had no idea was coming and die. i think you needed a certain mental resolve back in the day to complete games compared to now.

Can't forget about the Megaman, Contra, and Ninja Gaiden series since those were tougher than majority of games out since Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox/Gamecube Era.

Megaman 9 got low scores from some reviewers for being too hard compared to games today.

Six weeks with nothing to do every summer helped with such games, too.

Also, I came in here to point out that old games were emphatically not cheap, as Yoshi's Island cost £55 new, and some paid as much as £100 for Ocarina of Time, I hear.

I remember getting Star Wars on the NES bought for me for like £40-£50, that's before inflation. As a comparison I think a Mars Bar cost like 25p/30p tops back then.

I used to hate spikes in old games. If anything was going to kill me it was spikes.

Oldschool games were quite often about pattern memorization and shit. Though I prefer games more now that they're less rote behaviour.

Totally miss hard games, though. Actually challenging, mind. Not that retarded Demon's Souls shit.

I feel like back in the day when I would beat a game..there was a bigger sense of accomplishment that came with it. Today, beating a game just makes me go "well..that crap was easy..50 dollars for that? fuck!"
