This weekend I am hosting a professional wrestling party. Several of my coworkers are old-school WWF wrestling fans, so a few of us are getting together to watch some old-school WWF wrestling on my flat screen television. I have discovered that it is not easy to find the right balance
of old wrestling matches, amusing commentary from the likes of Bobby "The Brain" Heenen and Gorilla Monsoon, pay-per-view events, and professional wrestling time frame. Part of the difficulty lies in the fact that many professional wrestling fans have their own particular favorite wrestlers, commentators, moments both in and out of the ring, and time frame. A responsible host of a professional wrestling party tries to make as many of his or her guests happy as possible by providing wrestling material that will appeal to the broadest audience.

Talking to the guests of your professional wrestling party beforehand about their favorite wrestlers and wrestling moments can help to give you an idea of what your guests would like to watch. The first that you should remember when hosting a professional wrestling party is that many wresting invariably recalls many happy moments of watching wrestling. This means that it is just important that you succeed in recalling and evoking the feeling of watching wrestling with the enthusiasm of a child as it is which wrestlers or matches you watch.

As host of a professional wrestling party, it is up to you to choose the material, the "card" if you will, to be viewed. You must decide whether you will stick exclusively to old-school WWF wrestling from the 80s, or whether you will include material from the WCW and WWF Monday night wars, material from the WWF/WWE "attitude" era, and even current material from WWE such as Raw, Smackdown, or more recent pay-per-view events such as Wrestlemania. There is so much professional wrestling material from which to draw upon that it can be difficult to decide what to include.

Many people remember the major events in te history of professional wrestling, such as the match between Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania III (including Hulk Hogan's historic body slam of Andre the Giant), Rowdy Roddy Piper hitting Jimmy "Superfly"
Snuka on the head with a coconut on Piper's Pit, the breakup of the Mega Powers tag team (Macho Man Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan) over jealousy because of Miss Elizabeth on Saturday Night's Main Event, and so on. I think that the responsible host of a professional wrestling party will choose to offer a few of these defining moments in the history of professional wrestling but also choose to include some more obscure and lesser-remembered moments from the classic WWF television shows, such as Prime Time Wresling with Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "The Brian" Heenan providing comentary on clips from WWF house shows. The important thing is that the blend of wrestling material you include should evoke memories of watching professional wrestling, make everyone laugh, allow your guests to be sucked into the drama and theater of professional wrestling, and perhaps even strengthen their status as professional wrestling fans.

Although undoubtedly everyone will want to watch their favorite classic WWF moments, there is plenty of newer WWE wrestling material that is worthwhile to include in your professional wrestling party. For example, many fans of older WWF wrestling may not be aware that Hulk Hogan wrestled Vince McMahon in a street fight match at Wrestlemania XIX in 2003. No true wrestling fan can avoid having his/her curiosity piqued at the suggestion of such a match between an icon such as Hulk Hogan and a larger-than-life businessman and television personality such as Vince McMahon. The match was bloody and vicious but full of classic professional wrestling drama, comedy, theater, and stereotypes. I certainly plan to include this match, along with a selection of some of the better, more recent professional wrestling material from the WWE. If you are a current fan of WWE wrestling, you certainly know that there are many second and third generation wrestlers who are currently WWE superstars. Even people who have not watched wrestling in twenty years cannot help but have emotions stirred by by last names such as DiBiase, Orton, Hart, and so on. It is very, very easy to get swept up in the current story lines and drama of professional wrestling, and you would be doing your guests a disservice by not introducing them to this rich library of newer WWE wresling material.

It is important not to overlook food and beverages for your professional wrestling party. Traditional party food, such as nachos, popcorn, hot dogs, pizza, soda, beer, and so on, are the best foods to serve at a professional wrestling party because they evoke memories of live wrestling events or pizza/wrestling parties when they were younger. A professional wrestling party is not the time to break out the fine china or silver flatware. Stick to the kitschy foods that match the kitsch of the wrestling you will be viewing.

In conclusion, there is no one correct formula for a perfect professional wrestling party. Provide a healthy mix of wrestling material, both new and old, provide material that displays the best and the worst of professional wrestling, try to show your guests the matches and the wrestlers
that they would like to see, introduce them to the best WWF and WWE wrestling that they may not have seen before, and remember that wrestling is supposed to be fun to watch! Allow yourself and your guests to be swept up in the soap opera of wrestling feuds and drama, and make sure that the wrestling comedy leaves them with smiles on their faces. If you respect your guests and respect the wrestling itself, then your wrestling party will likely be a success. It may even make some old-school wrestling fans into new wrestling fans to keep the tradition, the sport, and the entertainment alive for future generations of wrestling fans.
