Bloody Disgusting received word that Warner Bros. Pictures has been looking to redo Mortal Kombat with Oren Uziel in talks to write. Based on Midway's popular 1992 video game, the franchise follows the best fighters from around the globe who are summoned to an island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will determine the fate of the entire planet. Uziel's Shimmer Lake made the 2009 black list, which features the best unproduced screenplays around Hollywood. Johnny Cage was modeled after Jean-Claude Van Damme. No word on the progress of the remake, but we'd like to see a hard "R" version with some actual f*cking fatalities.

They at least better keep the theme.

It's always a challenge to do a movie 13 years after something has hit the peak of mainstream popularity.

It will always be popular.

So what?
It will most likely flop like a pancake. First one was good for the fight scenes, second one was good for.......:|

Ray Park should probably play every part and fight himself

They really should go the Tekken route and get qualified action/martial artists. Unknowns, too. Good luck getting an R rated feature.

holy crap just watched the youtube video, the fights were so shite. i loved the film as a kid too.
but yeah, this really doesn't need to be made. it was niche enough at the time, now i'd wager about 10 people will see it.
I will def be one of those 10 people.

MK has a better mythology than most (all?) fighting games, story wise they have an edge. Action wise... much as changed in the action landscape. It would serve them well to go the Tekken route.

Honestly, and it's weird to say for an adaptation of Mortal Kombat of all things, but the fact that they didn't just cast for fighting prowess, and didn't just worry about the fights, is what made the first movie so enjoyable. Yeah the leads had martial arts experience, but they were actors too, and fully realized the characters. Tell me for one second that the movie would've been as good if Johnny Cage was played by Random Karate Stuntman #3 instead of Linden Ashby.

See this reboot idea makes sense; rise in martial arts films & popularity, video game films are getting better (Street Fighter: Chun Li excluded), larger fan base since more games have come out, it's been over 10 years....
Thing is, I really liked Robin Shou, oh well.
Just make it happen, ok.

Mortal Kombat is so 1995.
But seriously..this is good news. I hope they do a good job. That fucking Street Fighter movie was so awful. The first Mortal Kombat movie was one of the few decent video game films out there.
I have just learned that Ray Park was in the first MK movie.

Yea, he had a role in the second MK movie. I just found out he played Chuck Norris in The Legend of Bruce Lee.

So if Johnny Cage is based off Van Damme can Van Damme play Cage in the new movie? :shifty:
If so, then he just needs to also be in a Tekken movie.
