View Full Version : What the Hell Happened to JR???

Thia may seem stupid, but I was watching the Flair DVD (can't sleep..too stuffed with Easter Ham) and was halfway through the Flair/Steamboat 2 of 3 Falls Match..when I noticed how great the announcing was.

Both announcers (JR and Terry Funk) went out of their way to push both wrestlers. There was no heel/face bias. If Flair cheated somehow, it was "strategy" or just "a part of wrestling." The workers were telling a story in there, and the call just emphasized it. Ric Flair's second fall tap-out to a standing chickenwing just wouldn't have made as much sense without JR giving the details of Flair's plane crash (JR called it his Achilles' Heel..good stuff) and adding that Falir had never "tapped out before in his professional career"....just great storytelling all around.

Anyways..like i said in the topic....what the hell happened? When did being an announcer mean that every other word is an ear-splitting yell? Why can't we get announcers that just call the match? Even Smackdown, where I really liked Taz, has turned into the typical routine; a few weeks ago during Holly/Boker T Cole and Taz spent so much time yelling about Holly defending the locker romm they stopped calling the match for a solid 3 minnute plus.

I know that there's always going to be a little bias in order to get the announcers over. But if the JR from today called that Flar/Steamboat match it would've gone more like:

JR: NO!!!GODDAMN YOU RIC FLAIR YOU SUNOFABITCH!!! BAH GAWD!!!BAH GAWD!!! HOW CAN THIS TRAVESTY BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE???!!!?

FUNK: Ummmm...armbar?

Am I the only one that thinks having this over the top salivating over the wreslters actually takes away form the in-ring action?

With JR, it's a thing of the shtick becoming stale, and him not wanting to believe it. I think he's more at fault for what's going on with him than what is going on with Cole and Tazz. I think that latter pair's fault is more with the gimmick they are trying to push with not only the Book, but all of the SmackDown show (defending and boasting their brand every chance they get, why McMahon thinks that's going to make anything better is beyond me), which, in turn with Tazz's NOT WORKING heel announcing (Tazz's 2003 commentary was some of the best I've heard in a while. Why did they fix something that wasn't broken?), leads to some rather ugly sidetracking.

JR has changed over the years but I think it just has something to do with age and the fact that he had that stroke or what ever it was the paralyzed half of his face for a while.

PureHatred, I totally agree with you. I don't mind them showing enthusiasm, but sometimes he takes it too far, to the point where it's just annoying.
