Mustaine, but not because I like him so much as I dislike him less. Now, if you asked me to pick between Kurt Kermit and Mustane, or any of the other fifty guitarists for Megadeth over the years, it'd be a much harder choice.

Huge fan of both bands, but easily James Hetfield.
Dave Mustaine is better on guitar in my opinion, but James mostly focuses on rhythm. Both are pretty tight players though. However, in my opinion James is a much better vocalist and frontman. He is much better on the mic and has the all-round 'rock star' feel about him.
My main reason though, is simply because Dave Mustaine is the Bret Hart of heavy metal. He's a whiney bitch who has never been able to get over something as retarded as being kicked out of a band. On 'Some Kind of Monster' Dave's whinging to Lars about 'Do you have any idea what it was like?' etc etc, when for fucks sake there are MILLIONS of bands who would kill for quarter of the success Megadeth has had.
Also, I've met Dave Mustaine and he is one miserable fucker.
Both solid musicians, but definitely like James Hetfield more.

As far as between James and Dave, they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I enjoy both them for different reasons.
I love how bands who finally get the recognition and money they work for, then start taking risks with different styles, they "sold out". That line is so fucking tired.
I think Load and Reload would be considered good albums if they were put out by any band NOT named Metallica. Same with Risk and Megadeth.
I think we can all agree that St. Anger is the musical equivalent of James taking a great big shit in a pot and Lars banging on it.
Kalyx triaD
01-31-2010, 06:05 PM
Yeah, St. Anger was weird - and I won't try to be apologetic citing their personal issues at the time of that recording. But I'm talking about jackass critics and like to call "sell out" at the drop of a dime.

I've been listening to Load and Reload quite a lot lately so I could review them on a website. Both albums got 4/5 from me. Seriously.
Given enough listens the songs have grown on me and their still pretty fucking heavy and crunchy. Especially Reload. Songs like 'Attitude' and 'Bad Seed' are really ballsy and rockin', but nobody really seems to know about them coz their like, lesser songs on the 'shit album' or summit.
People should see past Load and Reloads reputations as 'bad albums' and really give them a few spins. The material is amazing.

Vastardikai
02-04-2010, 05:19 AM
To be fair, my personal preference of Anthrax over Metallica is just that: a personal preference.
I do like the early stuff of Metallica's, and I consider it some of the best stuff ever. I also like some Exodus, but I understand why they're ranked #5 in the big 5 thrash bands. Anthrax's role as #4 is as much bad luck as anything else.
Kalyx triaD
02-04-2010, 05:21 AM
What does that have to do with who's better? I don't think that factors, though I'm sure Metallica appreciated the help.

What does that have to do with who's better? I don't think that factors, though I'm sure Metallica appreciated the help.
If it came across like that, it wasn't my intention. I misread D-Mac's thing with Anthrax as him being like Anthrax had no merit what-so-ever.
Again, go up to my point where it's a Personal Preference. I just personally like Anthrax better.

The Big 4 (I often include Exodus, Kirk Hammett's old band, as being part of the Big 5) American Thrash Bands are Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax.
And they're linked, for the most part. Kirk of Metallica is formerly of Exodus. Of course Dave Mustaine is ex-Metallica, but he started Megadeth with Slayer's Kerry King, IIRC. And there's the bit of Anthrax helping out 'tallica get established on the east coast.

I love how bands who finally get the recognition and money they work for, then start taking risks with different styles, they "sold out". That line is so fucking tired.
You do understand that "sold out" in that definition wouldn't apply to Metallica, right? They "sold out" in the sense most people use: That they made more commercially viable, safer records. Lyrically, perhaps not, but they opted for more mainstream records.
They did the opposite of taking risks. They turned their albums into, essentially, "flavor of the week" deals.
But hey, it's not a bad thing, either. It just happens that Metallica was kind of a one-trick pony to begin with, and attempting to alter their style revealed a lot more flaws. And virgins everywhere had one less band to wangst to.

Mustaine, he stayed truer to his 'thrash roots' and didn't sell out (as much) as Hetfield did.

Come on, dmac, please stop being a whiny cunt. You always have the Royals! Or ..um... do you have a hockey team in K.C.? No bastkeball team...how about trying to reorganize the Monarchs of the Negro League? There are more important things than trying to decide which aging singer/guitar player is better. Take having sex, for example. Nobody loses when sex is had - unless someone had Aids. Then you may have a problem. I suggest meeting a nice girl down at your local Church ( no baptist churches) and NOT talking to her about metallica. Or maybe you could try meeting a nice teenager? Have you talked to Roxer about the benefits of touching underage people?
I'm just saying, I'm sure you have better ways to spend your time. I'll leave it at this; what are you going to do when Metallica is no more? They play the type of music that just can't be played into life's final years. They're all pushing 50, and thats pretty old for a metal act. Don't try to argue that Ozzy or Lemmy are in their sixties and still rockin, because Lemmy has pure alchohol running though his veins and Ozzy doesn't exactly "tour" anymore. I say you appreciate both bands for what they are while it lasts, and stop trying to decide who you would enjoy blowing more.

Power Rangers themes are TOTALLY metal, man. \m/
That aside, they've put out a lot of non-metal material, so yeah. I mean, anyone who pretends "Unforgiven" and its sixteen spinoffs (Auspie note: No, Kalyx, this is hyperbole. You don't need to correct me) is metal might as well call Chris Daughtry Thrash, but that doesn't invalidate their prior body of work.
As metal. It's already invalid on the grounds of quality. "FOUR CHORDS AND THE TRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTHAHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Is just as faggy, but it's not metal.
