...Lawlers attempts to get subtle heel heat as an announcer again? Or is it just me?

The announcing at the PPV was godawful. I normally don't nitpick about announcing, but man....:-\

yea you can tell he is trying TOO MUCH to try to get the heat. back in the 90s he was superb, now he's almost run down

Yeah he used to so energetic and into it in the mid-90s and Attitude Era but has sounded "bored" since like 2003.

i think its just because the audience now wants more from the announcers. gone are the days of the announcer who was more of a personality than a color guy. i hate lawler as an announcer he doesnt hold a candle to taz jbl or striker

Honestly I prefer his attempts to at least try and get some heel heat rather than having him and Cole nut hugging every face in the company.

Matt Striker carried the Rumble workload. It almost seemed as if he was making fun of Cole and Lawler the whole show. It was glorious.

Matt Striker is the closest thing to a heel announcer there is. At the PPV I think Lawler started to kind of take Striker's side if only because he didn't want to be owned by him.

I remember Striker saying something to cole like 'if the King and I both agree, you've got no chance'.

Honestly, I don't even think Striker is that much of a heel. He's definitely more heelish than the rest of the announcers outside of Byron Saxton (who is coming along nicely, btw), but he really just takes it all very objectively and calls things like he sees them. If a face does a heelish thing, he'll call them on it while the other announcers will be like "WELL HE HAD IT COMING!" or something.

Also doesn't help that him with Cole doesn't mix as well as a team compared to his longer team-up with J.R. Neither one seems to be really helping the other on commentating and as a result they appear bland. Overall, Lawler needs to be blamed more since when J.R. moved to Smackdown, J.R. adapted well to the new team and became fresh while Lawler has been bland since the split.

Cole worked very well with JBL since they both ended up creating an announcing team that meshed well with 2 different styles. JBL acted like the "heel" announcer but it was more in countering Cole's character than being anti-face for a wrestler in the ring.

Anybody else feel like Striker's commentary persona most closely resembles Jesse Ventura's?

I think I need to start listening to this Striker character you speak of.

I'm tired of Lawler, period. Face, heel, it's obvious he's punching a clock.
