February 5, 2010 - The thing that struck me about the last UFC game was that it just didn't move right. Don't get me wrong, the game looked slick, sucked you into the fights, and had awesome moves, but something about the rigid transitions between positions and moves just seemed odd. There was that second of hesitation in the characters while animations played out.

THQ says that's done with.

Moments ago, the company ran UFC Undisputed 2010 through its first public match – Mike Swick versus Paulo Thiago – and although the gameplay demo was extremely short, THQ promised and showcased some really good stuff. For starters and piggybacking off of my complaint, the static animations of 2009 are gone. When your fighters are in the prone position or mid-hold, they're not just sitting there -- they're living and breathing. You'll see your arm struggle against a hold as you try and break it, there are transitions between takedowns, and – thank the Lord – there are cage moves. This year, if you're good enough, you're going to be able to slam coverboy Brock Lesnar up against the chain link and wail on his ribcage.

You can switch to the southpaw stance if you click in on the right joystick, the fight animations have been quadrupled, the clinch has been reanimated, the number of front submissions have been doubled, there's a new targeting system, and there are individual submissions like B.J. Penn's arm trap. Not enough octagon goodness? THQ has added karate, Greco-Roman wrestling, and Sambo fighting styles while doing away with archetypes for fighters – created fighters will now use individual movesets.

Speaking of created dudes, Undisputed 2010 is going to pack more than 100 fighters, and none of them are going to be made from the creation mode like 50 percent of last year's roster. Every UFC athlete in the game will be given the photo-realistic treatment. If you're looking to make your fighters (or at least your repertoire) more diverse, sways, ducks and leans have also been added to this year's game to make everything that much deeper and more realistic.

If my preview's sounding a little bit like a list of stuff added, that's kind of because that's what I was given tonight. Although the virtual Swick/Thiago welterweight bout was on a bunch of different TVs, developers were talking over it while playing so the match was moving at demonstration speeds and wasn't that amazing before ending with Thiago tapping out to an arm bar. It did look sweet – the graphics are no doubt sharper than last year, as sweat clung to the fighters' chests and blood spurted out as punches rained down on Thiago's face – but that was about it. To drive home that TV presentation, the match ended with the fighters in the ring in post-fight outfits such as Swick's "Dethrone Royalty Texas" shirt.

It wasn't shown, but a THQ press release makes it sound like UFC Undisputed 2010 is making a serious play for one of the best online fighting games. In this year's game you'll apparently be able to form "fight camps and leagues, train like real-life UFC fighters and go online to compete against other camps." There will be online co-op sparring sessions that dictate your credibility, popularity and the types of sponsorships you get. On top of that, this year's career mode will include the "Game Is Watching You" system, which will "track every action and use this information to dictate in-game commentary, opponent intelligence and overall career progression."

UFC Undisputed 2010 is giving you new modes such as Title Mode (fight through a weight class to earn and defend a belt), Title Defense Mode (complete milestone challenges on your road to stardom) and Tournament Mode (16-player individual and team).

Personally, I'm excited for UFC Undisputed 2010, and tonight only fanned the flames. The game looks good on an eye-candy level, but it's the kicking to the curb of the rigid animations that has me really excited. I noticed that the chain link of the cage didn't bend when a body was shoved up against it, but hopefully those types of touches can be amended as we lead up to Undisputed 2010's May release date. Because, if they can and all the stuff THQ says it has added actually gets added, this game should kick the crap out of last year's title.

There is also jiggle physics for the octagon girls. I thought you should know that.

Probably a 'loaded comment' or something because he heard them say they would address it. IGN does that. They had an article about which fighters they wanted to see in SSF4 and they listed the leaked 3rd Strike characters. Now they get to say, "Hey the characters we wanted in the game made it! Capcom's listening!" No, you knew they were in there. They do that.

all well and good but if the only way to make your CAF's stats good is to job in fights and then destroy your sparring partner again i can't be arsed. i don't like this focus on building up stats in modern games. no mercy gave you a set number of points to work with and that worked great.

I also wanna see fixed stat distribution return. It was a perfect system and well balanced, no worrying about hopping online and getting thrashed by some bloke who has a lifetime to buff up his character. This goes for any game with such a system, namely the SvR series.

IF i recall correctly, there was some controversy when they were signing fighters to be in the game, something about their likeness being locked into contract for many years when they signed up to be in the game...so if that was accurate, they sure can be in the game.

Original Story: The Ultimate Fighting Championship has released welterweight crown contender Jon Fitch for refusing to sign his image rights away for a lifetime to UFC-based games being made by THQ. Fitch stated he thought it was "crazy" to sign "anything away for your lifetime." Fitch isn't the only one kicked out, as many of his teammates from the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose have been dismissed for refusing to submit.

We'll take this to mean that Fitch won't be appearing in THQ's UFC 2009 Undisputed expected in May '09. We know, all 10 of you out there who were going to buy the game and cared are devastated.

I'm loving that you can posture up now in various guards.

Fighting against the cage is cool, although I'm trying to get used to the new clinch system.. They seem to have gotten rid of the whole "sway before knees" in the clench, so that set up doesn't seem to be as cheap anymore, and it's also sped up.

The sway system is cool, and thankfully, unlike some of the fight night games, swaying doesn't leave your opponent "stunned", so it's not going to be insanely abused.

The stand up game is a lot less robotic/stiff... At the same time, since it's more fluid, there don't seem to be a lot of preset combos anymore... They do exist though.

Also, it seems like they stand you up quicker in this game if you're not working on the ground or in the clinch, which is cool.

Oh, and you can actually knock a guy out bad enough where it shows the trainers helping him on the ground, and when they do the winner announcements, he's not there. Awesome.

Yeah game is much better at the fighting all around the cage aspect. Still having trouble figuring out all the things you can do when up against the cage. Noticed that when on your back close to the cage, you can actually use the cage to try and escape back to your feet. Also you can still do the sway before the knees by using minor transitions then hitting left or right kick while in the clinch.

Is there been any videos or news on what the career mode will be like this year?

You clearly aren't a god if you had problems with people shifting to mount, my record was like 45-2 before I let somebody else play ranked and never did I have problems with people in mount. On the occasion I gave up full mount to somebody, the whole lean back and throw a punch or 2 was annoying but time your escape right and it's quite easy to roll out of it. So chill sweetheart.

Oh okay, so youre honestly gonna tell me you had NO problems EVER when people mounted. That 'time your escape' is bullshit, because when you'd get blocked your stamina dropped 20% and the dudes stamina barely dropped at all, so you'd set yourself up for a KO or submission if you had a BJJ guy on you. So timing your escape rarely worked, you had to work to get the '3rd try break' rule.

Like I said, it could be annoying, especially when I didn't really know the controls etc in single player with Brock taking me down, getting mount and fucking my shit up. But after a while, it 'clicked' when to reverse, when to wait or cover up etc and the times I'd give up mount afterwards didn't cause me too much grief. There were the occasional times when my opponent was pretty good and my reversal/escape attempts and him blocking them would go on for a while, that could get frustrating/boring. But rarely did I/do I take shots from mount.

there is no real control list. I dont know why they didnt throw in the tutorial like they did in last years demo, that would have been helpful. From what ive figured out, holding up on the left stick postures you up, but it doesnt seem like a full posture...maybe it is though, i dunno, i could just be used to last years static transitions and full postures.

I've only postured up once and I KO'd Lyoto with 2 shots, went for it as soon as I got mount. You have to keep hold of left or right on the left stick whilst throwing shots. Won't work if the guy on bottom has his arms around your guys head though, which tends to be most of the time from mount

When the cpu grapples me and forces me against the cage, I can never escape. Ever. How do I do submissions? Need help understanding how to grapple.

Also, how many fights should go the distance in the course of playing this game? Had a lot of KOs in the first round. On beginner, mind you.

click the right stick to go into a submission, then 'shine' to get them to submit (assume they have low stamina). LT aims for the legs, LB goes for the head when striking. Transitions are done in half circle and quarter circle motions, so when the cpu grapples you, you have to do either these minor transitions (quarter) or major (half) to jockey for proper position.

hold LT and push forward on the right stick to shoot in for a takedown, and during the struggle you must also 'shine'.

that depends on the difficulty of the opponent. On expert matches tend to go the distance in 3 round fights, and usually 4th or 5th round you get a KO or Sub (if you pace yourself correctly) in championship fights.

The big problem I see is that the used-game business is also a business, so once the consumer gets wind that every game seems to need $5-$10 to play online, then the stores drop their prices for the trade-ins to compensate as they'll have to start selling the used game cheaper.

And its NOT the same as 09, in 09 every transition was A to B, go from guard to half guard. There was no wrist control, no cage presence, no transition system during grappling, no posturing it in any position, etc etc.

Generally in terms of sports games, they should take a couple of years out every so often as they will get stale. As this is only the second iteration, there was a lot that could be tweaked for improvements and I feel they have. This is more of a L4D to L4D2 upgrade than an EA Sports "upgrade".

In a few years it will more than likely get stale though, especially if SDvR is anything to go by. Hopefully they do something to stop that from happening.

I love sitting down with some friends and just telling it to do random fights. Usually the pairing is way off but the best moment we had so far is that we have not once had a fight break past the first round. Every time its always a knockout in the first few minutes except one time which he knocked me out with like five seconds to go.

You know those little activities you could do to boost your cred in career mode last year? Well this year, you actually DO the events. If you're schedulded to attend a fight card, you actually have the option of watching the fights, and you also predict who will win each fight, how, and what round. The more you pick right, the more cred you get.

So playing one match means you played through the game? ONE match will CLEARLY teach you all the ins and outs of a game. Jump on Street Fighter, MW, or any game for that matter, and tell me exactly what playing one match will teach you.

I'm going to agree with you completely here because I think you are right. I have never been a person who buys sports games every year when they come out because I always found it not worth the $70 for the few new players and tweaks since the previous edition (graphics do not make a game, so I don't count them)

So having said that perhaps it,influenced my premature judgment that this game is exactly like its predecessor, just after that match, nothing felt different at all to me hence what I posted.

I'm really struggling with 'shinning'. Last year I mastered the brute force escape, so this year I'm finding it way hard to get out of submissions.

I can pretty much dominate on any difficulty, and I can win say 75% of the time on the hardest difficulty. But as soon as someone locks in a submission on even easy mode, I'm screwed.

You can play either style eh, either you are mobile or you are a camper. Since snipers tend to stay in one spot alot they would be by definition campers.

I move myself, but usually I stay in the one spot and shoot someone before I move.
