View Full Version : Why the fuck do American shows stop and start so much mid-season

I dunno this might be a problem with British TV too but I never notice it with them. Went for my Tuesday morning downloading of House, 24, How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory and the only fucker that was on last night was 24. Now they all appear to be back on next week from a quick googling but shows over there seem to constantly miss a week and it annoys the piss out of me.

Fox is really bad about only doing half seasons so they have more shows with less episodes. And they can then fit in American Idol for 5 nights a week.

Flash Forward has the most retarded break, mid-season for 4 months I think.

Smallville always has ridiculous breaks as well.

How I Met Your Mother has been pretty ridiculous too, with its "few weeks new, one week off" kind of deal it has been doing.

Don't mind half a season with a break it's this one week in one off two on one off nonsense.

I would guess now it's because they don't want to compete with the Olympics.

Part not wanting to compete with Olympics, part not wanting to pay for as many episodes, part saving the new episodes for "sweeps week", where the ratings basically determine how much the networks will be able to charge for advertizing.

It was a holiday, too. I'm sure that was a factor.

At least they do continue, unlike some incredibly funny British shows which stop after 2 seasons.

Why mess with perfection, something like the UK version of The Office was 12 episodes and a Christmas special of perfection adding more for the sake of it would just sully it.

South Park and few other animated shows also do the break in between the same year. South Park has new episodes for 2-3 months, then a few months of a break, then finishes the year with 2-3 months of episodes.

Almost all shows that start in the Fall are broken up. This is to avoid a dip in ratings in the holiday months and to have their best shows on in the Fall and Spring, the 2 biggest ratings periods. Summer sees a drop as people are....outside and shit :) and the winter because of the Holidays and the glut of American Sports.

lost is the fucking worse for that. as soon as you remember what the fuck was happening it stops again for about 6 months.

I wasn't necessarily talking about The Office. :p I don't like that half as much as the American one. Can't understand half the things Gervais says because his accent is so thick. I started watching The Inbetweeners and am sad to find it only went 2 seasons.

They are trying to stretch 22-24 episodes out over the course of a 9 month period. Holidays and other such things are just blatantly good reasons to pick those particular weeks to not air the new episodes.

Lost hasn't done anything like this for 3 seasons now. It runs it's 16 episode season for 4 straight months with no breaks in between and then it's done until the next season. Of course this is the last season anyways.
