TNA newcomer Orlando Jordan kissed a man prior to his match with Samoa Joe at last night’s iMPACT! taping in Orlando. The former WWE United States Champion was escorted to the ring by a man and a woman. He had his arms around both of them and kissed each prior to his match.
This reportedly didn’t go over well with everyone backstage in TNA as some felt the company “crossed the line” as it were. One TNA performer offered the opinion that the angle will turn off viewers from Spike considering it’s specifically geared towards men.
It’s worth noting that before Jordan’s release from World Wrestling Entertainment in May 2006, there were creative plans for him to be repackaged with a bisexual gimmick in a storyline involving former TNA performer Stephanie Finochio (a/k/a Trinity) and a friend of his with no prior background in the wrestling industry. While bisexuality is considered taboo in some wrestling circles, it was passed for Jordan since it’s his lifestyle in the real world. It should be noted that the storyline was Jordan’s idea because creative had no plans for him at the time.

I guess it could work if they played it heel and made all of his opponents homophobes...but who's the real heel in that scenario? I think this is a bad idea, not because he's kissing a dude, but because there's really not much you can do with it.

kareru, you really can't use Japan as a measuring stick. They have an inflatable doll that does moves on people and I think actually has some victories, don't they?
I love that their excuse is the main demographic of Spike.
Basically said people who watch Spike are homophobic.

I mean, the whole premise of professional wrestling is to make it look as real as possible, right? That doll gimmick isn't even trying. It'd be like if you were watching a sci fi movie, then all of a sudden an alien pulled off his mask and the actor started laughing at the viewer for buying into it. Sure, you knew it was fake all along, but you decided to play along and step into their world anyway...and they basically slapped you in the face for it. I'm rambling. Sorry.
If there were a legit reason for the gimmick, I'd be fine with it.
For example, when Al Snow fought himself. It worked because it was an insane gimmick. It wasn't about him wrestling air, it was about advancing the story.
That said, I could never see a reason for this type of gimmick.

Wasn't the blow up doll mad at Undertaker for some reason and started to mock Taker's gimmick?
If any odd gimmick was to cross over, I'd like to see LADDER. One of the best champs DDT ever had.
Oh and as for the thread topic. I could care less and now I have Rainbow Express's theme in my head.

Jordan's wanted to do this bisexual gimmick for the longest time, IIRC. He pitched it to WWE right before he left because the writers didn't have any ideas for him. The fact that he actually is bisexual probably helps in making the gimmick more believable (or respectful, instead of being one big gay joke like Billy and Chuck).
Edit: I should probably read that last paragraph before I post.
With that said, I don't know how long it'll last. I'll give them credit for doing something that WWE was even afraid of before they went PG, though.

BTW, I am totally fine with Jordan using this angle, mainly because I do not feel the need to panic and run screaming if a man should kiss another man - although, I see no reason to have him there (in TNA, or on TV) in the first place.

I don't see the problem with the gimmick. Professional wrestling has had gay and ambiguous gimmicks before. And they will have more. It's a very simple way of getting a reaction from someone. It's not very sophisticated that a gay character pretty much has to be a heel, but it is being used for a heel, and if it makes the fans hate OJ, than more power to him. And when he turns face, they can tone down the shtick, but still make reference to it, and actually do their part for homosexual rights. :shifty:
As for that Japanese stuff -- it really doesn't bother me. It is purely done for entertainment value. Hell, I actually got into that guy facing "the invisible wrestler." The dude mimed it to the point where you knew exactly what would have been going on if he was wrestling a real person.
CHIKARA does stuff like this. I think they had a character called "The Bear," who was some guy in a bear costume. I remember seeing a referee check him for foreign objects before a match, only to get mauled by The Bear. It's all harmless fun.
In a serious company it could be seen as a bit of a risk, but if they stressed it was all for entertainment, and made sure they presented it differently to their bread and butter angles, some comedy matches now and then would not hurt. You could even have a serious wrestler mock an "entertainment" wrestler (The Miz would be good for this), only for the comedy wrestler to hold their own against The Miz.
Eh, I don't see it as the death blow that other people do. It's obviously done with the concept that the guys in the ring are entertainers as well as athletes, and they occasionally wrestle competitively but aren't above getting in there and just doing something for giggles.

Muhammad Hassan was an American whose promos spoke of being treated unfairly since 9-11.
The result was audiences booing the Ay Rab and telling him to go back home. Before he'd ever done anything heelish except have another religion and a buddy who spoke a strange language.
Who's the real heel? Well, probably the racist, xenophobic asshats qualify for "The Real Heel Is You," but that doesn't stop a damn thing. You run with a "faggot," and he's likely to be a heel simply because he makes other dudes uncomfortable.
Doesn't matter who the real heel is.

Ok, so watching Impact right now and they edited out the kiss. Wonder when they go live if they'll scrap it all together. Either way, something about his entrance music and prance to the ring cracks me up. I'm actually starting to wonder about myself.....
I like how his matches thusfar in TNA have been unpredictable, Taz sounded genuinely suprised when he went over Joe.
