2 sucked balls with all the sword fighting but this looks like it may be more hand to hand combat (hope to god it is)

I was not aware Ong Bak 2 was out. Still reeling from Chocolate tbh. Love Tony Jaa.

like a year ago. it was awful though. story was ok but the fight scenes were just shitty swordfights which makes me sad.

Ong Bak 2 just hit stateside last week. Gonna buy it on Monday.
Looks like Jeeja Yanin is my new favorite martial artist though. Raging Phoenix looks way better than Ong Bak 2.

i can kinda understand why ong bak 2 was how it was. after ong bak and tom yum goong or whatever its english title was i don't really know where you can go from there, so swords are a natural progression. plus it's part of muay boren which is like a muay thai offshoot if i remember right.

There was still hand to hand combat in Ong Bak 2. I enjoyed it.

What type of faggot doesn't like weapon combat? Jesus Christ.

Hand to hand > weapon combat.

Do you think weapon combat is "gay"?
The Mask
02-18-2010, 02:48 PM
weapon combat is stupid. especially in martial arts films. if there is a sword fighting scene in a random film that's fine. kill bill being a good example. but i don't want to watch a kung fu film and find it's all swords. like if i saw a jackie chan or bruce lee film like that i would be gutted.
plus swords are utterly fucking irrelevent in this day and age.

So's hand to hand fighting if that's a part of your argument.
The Mask

no it isn't you silly bollocks. everybody has hand to hand fights. some people have gun fights. i doubt you get many people wandering around carrying big fucking swords to duel with though.

That's why these things usually take place in fiction.

Fiction based on the real world, however.

i don't get whats to like about swordfights. something about it just bores the piss out me. two guys clanking bits of sharp metal together for about 8 minutes at a time. boring as shit.

Agreed. Save for the Jeeja > Tony bit. They are about equal in my book.

Tom Yum Goong = The Protector in North America, glorious film btw. I'll still check out Ong Bak 2, but it is disappointing because unless it's ridiculous wire fu (Kill Bill or Fearless), sword fighting is always terrible in movies.

I saw the film and like Dale Newstead said it's not all sword fights but there was plenty of hand to hand combat. I just think weapon combat isn't your thing and you don't like that the movie had a lot of it.
If it's a film set in a more modern time then yeah it's pretty ridiculous for some dudes to have swords and fight with them but these are not really martial arts films. They are basically action films that have martial arts in them and other things too.
And you know there's a story to this film and it has cultural influences. Back then, not just in Thailand but people used swords and other weapons to defend or attack.
It's like saying you're gutted because in a World War II movie there was a lot of hand to hand combat more than there were guns shooting and grenades and missiles.
There was a Bruce Lee film where he used nun chakus for a good part of it. Also there was Jackie Chan film with a lot of sword fighting. You'll probably hate those then.

pfft. nunchucks are cool but useless.
agree that swords were right for the period the film was set and all, but yeah there was way too much of it for my liking.
i think jackie chan could make sword fights good, because of the comedy/slapstick element his films have. ong bak 2 took itself pretty seriously though.

actually i think something got horribly lost in translation during ong bak 2 as well, the ending had me so wtf i wanted to explode.
The Jackie Chan film is called The Myth. I didn't hear anything about it before it came out so I thought it was just another JC film to keep the masses happy but I watched it about a year or more ago and I have to say it's one of my favorite JC films of his.

He also did a movie where he is one of two thieves who happen to come upon a baby during one of their heists and end up taking care of it and shenanigans involving the baby and the bad guys ensue.
It's out now. Haven't watched it yet.

It is, if you understand Thai. No release outside of Thailand yet. :'(
There is much less action than the previous movie and it's pretty slow for the first half but he does just use his bare hands for like 95% of the fights while everyone else uses weapons.

Watched Ong Bak 2 on netflix the other day, since 3 just hit stores. Not nearly as much swordplay as you made it out to have. There are a lot of weapons, but many different kinds. I liked it.
Better than no fighting. I.E. Ong Bak 3, which I'm halfway through right now. It's good, but so far there is less fighting inthis than any other tony jaa movie.

omg come on
I watched it a long time ago and forgot a lot of stuff but if my previous post is true then it should pick up in the last half.

nah that was tom yum goong/warrior king/the protector. that was actually a pretty sweet film with probably the best one shot fight scene of all time, even though the story sucked.
