View Full Version : Do adult (18+) marks exist?

Xero

Have you ever run into adult marks? I'm talking hardcore marks, who believe it's real to a degree (maybe not the whole thing but buy things as "shoots" a lot) and the like?

Not QUITE to their degree, but sort of like Gordie and Sean from Ready to Rumble?

Truthfully, I think inside we are all marks.

I go to a local restaurant with a group of friends to watch PPVs and there are quite a few in attendance.

One in particular is this massive man who has to be in his 40s at least (I'm awful at guessing ages, though) who pretty much repeats his mark-ish comments, getting louder each time. He also enjoys starting shit with people around him who cheer for the heels.

Example from EC: Jericho won the belt (our table went NUTS). He exclaimed over and over: "We all know he's facing Edge!...I can't wait til Edge beats him!"

I have to admit I was pretty gullible when I was like thirteen (thought the Triple H/ Stephanie drive through marriage was real lol), but I can't imagine a grown person not understanding what's going on.

The only thing I can think of that might be close was my friend Bryan. He was 21 and didn't really keep up with wrestling but liked gothic stuff a lot and was a big Undertaker fan. Except by "big" fan, I mean that he was pretty convinced that Mark Calloway like lived the gimmick and was the head of a cult and whatnot.

Favre4Ever
02-23-2010, 09:23 PM
There also isn't really evidence to prove that he is wrong though.

Aside from the fact that Calloway is more of a biker redneck type.

I have 2 cousins one 18 and the other 22 who are marks that think it's real. They both hate Edge and Jericho.

Yes. I worked with a guy a few years ago who was in his early 20's. It was when Kurt Angle and The Undertaker were having that set of matches for the world title on Smackdown. I remember having a discussion one day about great wrestlers and as the conversation went on I realized his idea of a great wrestler was someone who won a lot of matches. That slowly turned into him talking about how Ric Flair was an awful wrestler because he always cheated.

Also, in a much worse case, my Nieces boyfriend a few years ago found out I liked wrestling and engaged me in conversation. He started talking about the people he used to like growing up like Andre the Giant. He then mentioned how he heard that Andre died from a heart attack after Jake Roberts threw his snake on him. He was dead serious.

I didn't know how to respond to that. It seems trivial to just be a dick and tell him it's not real and that never happened. Especially since the guy obviously had the mental capacity of a peanut.

I don't know anyone who's a true mark, but a few people who watch it like any other TV show in that they root for the good guys, hope the bad guys get what's coming to them, etc. They're not emotionally involved in the outcome or think it's reality, though.

I can respect that, I think. I honestly wish I could watch these shows like that instead of constantly worrying about who's getting pushed and who's getting buried...it might make Raw a lot more tolerable.

bro, if you go to the NWA Fanfest show in Charlotte, there's about 300 adult marks in attendence. The "Still Real to me Dammit" guy is like 50% of the people there. I love the weekend that Greg Price puts on there, but I feel out of place at times. It's wierd.

Yes, absolutely they do.

I go to a bar to watch the WWE PPVs sometimes and this guy, mid 30's, is almost always there and he is a total mark if I've ever met one. He literally jumped off his bar stool and started yelling when Sheamus beat John Cena for the WWE Title, he was so pissed about Cena "slipping" and the referee not restarting the match.

He also tried to convince me why Triple H and Shawn Michaels as DX are way better than any of the previous incarnations of the stable.

He also laughs hysterically at Hornswoggle segments.

Oh, they exist.

Assuming you live somewhere in the US:
http://www.wwe.com/schedules/blastareas/

Use that (^) and look up your city and state and you might just find a nearby restaurant or bar that shows them.

I want to know what that guy is talking about so bad.

What did Terry Funk say? Why did it need to be said? What is it that he doesn't want to see another of?

I've wondered this long enough. I want answers.

Many things about that video add to it's greatness.

First of all, the guy lounging in the bleachers alone behind the panel.
Secondly, the people surrounding the fan in question. Some seem to be comforting, and others just wishing they weren't near him.
Some of them don't look like they're even very happy to be there.

Finally, he's holding a notepad. He has decided to take notes during this Q&A session. I think it being real to him is an understatement.

There's actually two at my job that come to mind. One is a 60 somthing year old lady who bitches at me becuase I like the heels. She HATES the viper, which has me gloating that I thorighly enjoy seeing Orton win.

The other guy's in his early to mid 30s, I think, and has switched the channel to TNA becuae "Hulk still rules". I told him Bret's back, and he asked me if Bret ever body slammed Andre the Giant.

I know a guy in his 30s that is definitely a mark. He loves all faces, and hates all heels. The only real difference about him, is that he hates Cena and never reads internet message boards or dirt sheets. He also loves all of these older guys returning to TNA due to nostalgia. He even told me recently he wants to see the Outlaws, and even Warrior return at some point.
