Don't think it was NE or the Jets that did that originally. Remember reading on PFT about some other team doing it a few years ago but can't remember who it was. It's how I knew after reading about Ventrone being released and re-signed the first couple times that BB was us the 54 man roster trick on him

Saints, Bucs complete 54-man roster trick
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 30, 2009, 2:55 PM EST

When posting on Tuesday a brief blurb pointing out that the Saints had placed tackle Jammal Brown on injured reserve and also had signed offensive lineman Nick Leckey, I thought to myself, “That name sounds more familiar than it should.”

So, as I do in most cases when resolving a nagging question might actually require effort on my part, I ignored it.

But when I received today the e-mail notice from the Buccaneers that linebacker Matt McCoy has been re-signed, I remembered why Leckey’s name stood out from the crowd of bottom-of-the-roster slapolas who are trying their damnedest (and we respect for that, despite calling them slapolas, slappies, or slapdicks) to stick on an NFL team.

Leckey was cut on Saturday to create a spot for quarterback Chase Daniel, just like McCoy was cut on Saturday to create a spot for receiver Mario Urrutia.

It’s the 54-man roster trick — a device for creating an extra roster spot by cutting late in a given week a vested veteran whom the team trusts to not sign with another team. By cutting the veteran on Saturday, the player misses no practice time (other than a walk-through) and loses no money. Then, the following week, the vested veteran is re-signed.

Typically, the player who was called up to fill a specific roster need is then cut again, just as the Bucs did with Urrutia. In New Orleans, however, the Saints have not yet been required to cut Daniel, since Brown has been placed on injured reserve.

Technically, the move violates no league rules — as long as the teams don’t tell the players who are cut that there will be a spot for them the following week and/or as long as the teams don’t seek assurances from the players (or their agents) that they won’t sign with other teams.

Surely, the Saints didn’t cut Leckey and the Bucs didn’t cut McCoy without explaining what would happen this week. Even more surely, neither team set those players loose without feeling pretty darn confident that they would re-sign this week.

And they have.

Here’s the caveat. After next month’s trading deadline, vested veterans must pass through waivers, so if a team tries the 54-man roster trick, there’s a risk that no amount of winking and/or nodding will ensure that the player who is cut on Saturday will still be available on Tuesday.

Kris P Lettus 12-27-2011 02:41 AM

They can't just move him from the active.roster to the practice.squad which is why thy.have to release and resign him..

Kris P Lettus 12-27-2011 02:41 AM

Saints have.been doing this also..

Emperor Smeat 12-27-2011 03:19 AM

Not surprised other teams do it or have done it earlier although I believe Belichek didn't start to actively use the 54-man trick until he noticed the Jets doing the same with Woodhead.

Problem with the Jets was they were dumb enough to use it on a decent player and it backfired on them. Nobody wants Ventrone but a lot of it is due to him making about $350k this season as sort of a "gift" and BB making sure he gets placed back on the roster for paycheck day so he doesn't lose out on any money.

The Bengals are in position to earn a second playoff berth in three seasons with a win Sunday against Baltimore at Paul Brown Stadium.
It would be hard to tell that by the all of the empty seats at PBS this season.
The announced crowd for Saturday’s 23-16 win against Arizona was 41,273. That total represents the number of tickets distributed and not necessarily the number of people in attendance. It’s the third time this season the announced crowd has been less than 42,000, with the crowd of 41,142 for the Buffalo game on Oct. 2 being the smallest crowd in PBS regular-season history.
In an attempt to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen for the regular-season finale against Baltimore, players turned into salesmen after Saturday’s game and the team announced that it is offering a two-for-one ticket purchasing deal for season-ticket holders.
“I just want to thank the fans who were out there today,” said defensive tackle Domata Peko. “We really felt you guys out there, and that helped us out big time. I really want to encourage all of the Cincinnati fans to come out and cheer us on as we try to make the playoffs.”
Beginning Monday, season-ticket holders may call the ticket office at (513) 621-8383 with their account information to take advantage of the offer and purchase tickets.
A win against Baltimore would clinch the sixth and final playoff spot in the AFC for the Bengals (9-6). The Ravens (11-4) need a win or a loss by Pittsburgh against Cleveland to clinch the AFC North division title.
Cornerback Adam Jones was in full campaign mode Saturday.
“I’m just happy for the team and the city of Cincinnati,” said Jones. “The fans did a great job getting behind us, and we need all of you this week.”
The Bengals' streak of 57 sellouts, stretching back to 2003, ended last year. They have had just one sellout – against Pittsburgh – in their last 11 home games. That has meant no local television broadcast for those 10 games.
Through the first seven home games this season, the Bengals have drawn 330,570 to PBS, or 72 percent of the stadium’s capacity. PBS seats 65,515.
The Baltimore game has been moved from its original 1 p.m. kickoff time to 4:15 p.m. Under NFL blackout rules, teams have to sell out games 72 hours in advance of kickoff in order for them to be shown in markets within a 75-mile radius. For the Bengals that includes Cincinnati, Dayton and Lexington. Extensions of 24 hours have been granted in the past, but the Bengals are hoping that won’t be necessary.
They're #32 in attendance, only team averaging in the 40,000's. Im guessing this is showing the downside of the blackout rule, in that if you can't watch the games, then it is hard to get additional interest for people to go to the games. At least that even if they made the playoffs they wouldnt have to worry about the embarassment that would be not being able to sell out a playoff game.

I might go to the Ravens game there next year.

SlickyTrickyDamon 12-27-2011 08:21 AM

Why would they have to worry about selling out a playoff game? They would be the wildcard team wouldn't they? They wouldn't be playing in Cinci.

Though I don't think they would need to worry about that anyways. Even if they did host a playoff game people would do what you plan to do next year: buy a ticket as a fan of the opposing team.

I said they wouldnt have to worry about it because theres no way as the #6 seed that they would have a home playoff game. Sort of like how the Ravens never have any hope for a home playoff game winning the wild card every year.

SlickyTrickyDamon 12-27-2011 09:01 AM

You going to try to score home tickets for the playoffs if they maintain the tiebreaker or get a game lead?

Ermaximus 12-27-2011 11:40 AM

31 players on IR. At least the season is almost over.

Evil Vito 12-27-2011 11:55 AM

The Giants only have 2 quarterbacks on their active roster - however Coughlin generally keeps a 3rd on the practice squad. In this case it's Ryan Perriloux, who has been cut and re-signed to the practice squad about 10 separate times this season.

Ermaximus 12-27-2011 12:03 PM

Sounds like Todd Bouman with the Jags.

FearedSanctity 12-27-2011 12:09 PM

Aahaha, fucking Perilloux. I remember all the rage around here when he backed off his commit to Texas. If only they knew he'd turn out to be a huge waste of talent

Evil Vito 12-27-2011 12:22 PM

He actually looked pretty good during the pre-season, some even thought Coughlin might go ahead and have 3 QBs on the active roster this year. Wouldn't be opposed to him coming back next year although Coughlin is partial to having the backup QB be a veteran.

Thanks, Saints. You assholes. Now we have to dish out an ass whipping of likes which has never been seen to the Rams and we don't get to rest.

Falcons players are crying like little bitches about "running up the score" at the end of the game.. You get paid to play defense, this is not high school football.. All the Falcons players before the game were like "we don't care if he breaks the record, as long as we win", fuck that.. Keeping Brees under 300 should have been a huge motivating factor for their D..

Stop fucking crying and play some defense, and this wouldn't have happened..

Why would he not want to break it last night?? At home, against a division rival, on national tv??

The 9er's game is at noon next week, where the Saints game is at 3.. If the 9ers win, Brees doesn't even need to suit up.. Why would he want to come up a handful of yards short, like he did in '08??

Fucking crybaby faggots..

p.s. "No need for that," one player said. "It came on our watch, but it didn't have to come that way. We won't forget it.".. Like Herm Edwards says, "put your name on it".. Pussies..

Perhaps Pacman Jones and the other Cincinnati Bengals players are better salesmen than we gave them credit for.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Bengals fans were lined up outside of Paul Brown Stadium on Monday waiting to buy tickets for the regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens. The Bengals (9-6) are in a win-and-in situation for an AFC wild-card spot, but played Saturday against Arizona to a crowd of just over 40,000 fans.

Approximately 2,000 tickets were sold in the first couple of hours using a "buy one, get one free" offer for Bengals season ticketholders. And while the minor league baseball-type promotion has moved the needle on ticket sales for a team desperate for a home-field advantage Sunday, it has raised some eyebrows around the NFL. For each free ticket given out, the Bengals have to absorb 34 percent of its cost and reimburse the league for the visiting team's share of the gate.

lol

9er's release Braylon Edwards..

I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense. I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs. I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season. Thanks for your continued support and for being such loyal fans.

Nark Order 12-27-2011 02:18 PM

You may have also been released because you have "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" where your hands are supposed to be as well, Braylon. You shithead.

Drew Brees to Darren Sproles for the record....

ANd the Chargers are sitting home and about to fire their coach.

I find it funny that they draft manning and trade him away (I know it wasnt their choice).

Then They Let Brees walk and go with Rivers.

Both Are Super Bowl winning QBs now. And the Chargers are perennial playoff underachievers.

Lots of ammo for angry Chargers fans.

Blakeamus 12-27-2011 02:55 PM

"None of us will forget what we saw Monday night. We saw greatness. We saw one of our generation's special quarterbacks take down a record that has lasted 27 years. This much I know: This new mark won't last another 27.

Heck, it might not even last a week. New England's Tom Brady is just 190 yards behind Brees heading into the final week.

For now, the kid got his wish.

It's just too bad it happened the way it did."

Supreme Olajuwon 12-27-2011 03:23 PM

Blakeamus, I feel like you care way too much about what sports writers think about your favorite football team.

It's how you feel that should matter.

Ermaximus 12-27-2011 03:34 PM

Supreme, I am heavily rooting for the Ginger kid to pull the upset and get into the playoffs his rookie year.

Kris P Lettus 12-27-2011 03:41 PM

nah it's a win and they're in game

but they have the best record of all the teams fighting for the #6 seed so technically they could lose and still get in

Kris P Lettus 12-27-2011 04:05 PM

Maybe we'll have the "Who Dat??" vs. "Who Dey??" Super Bowl we've been talking about for like 8 years..

lol watch that happen and brady pass him on the record lmao

Kris P Lettus 12-27-2011 04:15 PM

Well, I found out that they were only gonna move the Saints/Panthers game to 3pm if the Falcons had won last night..

So, I guess Brees will start with the chance the the 9er's will lose to the Rams.. Part of me is happy cause he will torch Car's secondary, but the other part of me (thinking the 9ers will win) wants him fresh for the playoff run..

Nark Order 12-27-2011 04:30 PM

I'm not sure if the Rams even WANT to win that game, tbh. If they lose and the Colts win (which might be likely vs Jax), it is Luck Town USA for the Rams.

Innovator 12-27-2011 04:32 PM

I wonder if the Rams would abandon the Bradford Experience that quickly.

Hanso Amore 12-27-2011 04:34 PM

I dont think they would. I think they would trade that pick for a goddamn Kings Ransom.

Nark Order 12-27-2011 04:34 PM

I'm not sure, but it seems like they'd be dumb not to get something out of that pick regardless. Trade Island.

Hanso Amore 12-27-2011 04:36 PM

As "touted" as Luck is, he is hardly a sure thing, no QB is.

It would be stupid to bail on a solid young QB when you could literally trade to a team like Washington for 2-3 First Round Picks.

Supreme Olajuwon 12-27-2011 04:36 PM

Can you imagine what the Redskins would be willing to part with for the #1 pick? It'd be a fucking madhouse.

Supreme Olajuwon 12-27-2011 04:37 PM

JINX

Hanso Amore 12-27-2011 04:37 PM

As much as I wish the Bills could land Luck, I kind of hate him. The Whole Sweepstakes and pure, unadulterated Fellatio fest that has been the last two years is fucking annoying. The guy is not a God, and he hasnt even played in the NFL.

He is too much Hype.
