Everything Paul Dini has written for Batman over the past few years has been gold. :y:

mitchables 08-15-2010 11:45 PM

dini's batman stuff is always gold. he knows that city so well.

Fignuts 08-16-2010 04:44 PM

Thanos Imperative has been great so far. As if a marvel cosmic event would be anything but.

Also, Thanos is an awesome villain.

Funky Fly 08-16-2010 04:49 PM

New event? Is that the big crossover now?

The Destroyer 08-16-2010 04:55 PM

Shame it's by no means certain what's happening with the cosmic titles post-Thanos. :(

Its the latest in the line of "Space Events"

- Annihilation (Which lead to the ongoing Nova series)
- Annihilation: Conquest (Which lead to ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy)
- War of Kings (Which lead to various Realm of Kings aftermath stuff)
- Thanos Imperative

But yeah, Marvel's space stuff has been consistently excellent over the past several years.

DC's R.E.B.E.L.S. is also a great little series for their side of space-adventures.

I like it.

The Destroyer 08-17-2010 02:52 AM

I liked it more in the David Finch image from the DC Movie thread. Not sure about that... ribbing, I guess. Especially in the first one.

Kalyx triaD 08-17-2010 04:10 AM

Update Supes while they're at it.

Fignuts 08-17-2010 07:05 AM

Bah.

Batman didn't need those changes. Even small ones like these.

DaveBrawl 08-17-2010 01:58 PM

I like it, except for the chest emblem. I don't really like how it sets away from the body like it does, but otherwise I like the change.

Lock Jaw 08-17-2010 02:01 PM

Dick Grayson still Batman as well? With big ears?

Fignuts 08-19-2010 09:00 AM

Can anyone give me the essential JLA stories to read post-crisis? Want to get into that book. Also JSA, but I have no idea where to even start with that one.

Also going to check out the new gods, as it seems to have an atmosphere about it like early Thor, which is my favorite book ever.

Lock Jaw 08-19-2010 02:34 PM

JLA, you can start picking up the Grant Morrison Deluxe Editions, which collect his stuff on the JLA.

Or if you want to go back further they have several Justice League International TPBs out now.

Honestly, not to familiar with "essential" JLA stories.

JSA, I've read pretty much everything they've been in since the 1940s.

I'd recommend that you start with the 1999 "JSA" series. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice...ected_editions

Anything before the 1999 series is pre-crisis. There was briefly a series in 1992 as well, but that isn't collected at all. Which is a shame.

But yeah, if you like the 1999 series, you can either delve backwards, or forwards into the more current stuff.

jla (1997 - 2006)

world war III
tower of babel
jla: earth 2
jla/avengers
pain of the gods
identity crisis (crossover)
crisis of conscience
world without a justice league

[52 happens here]

justice league of america (2007 - )

tornado's path
lightning saga
injustice league
sanctuary
second coming
when worlds collide
cry for justice
team history

mitchables 08-20-2010 01:13 AM

i will say though that the current justice league book has been a fucking shambles since meltzer left. they've gone through 3 or 4 writers since and the roster keeps changing and shit. hal was in, switched with john stewart, brought back in, switched out for cry for justice, brought back in following that, and out again after blackest night.

motherfucker.

Fignuts 08-20-2010 01:25 AM

Awesome.

Fignuts 08-20-2010 06:57 AM

Just picked up all those pre 52 books for 40 dollars. Love me some half.com

Confused 08-20-2010 08:23 AM

I haven't really been picking up anything regular by DC or Marvel in a few years but i am badly tempted to go get the trades of Ex Machina seeing as it is coming to an end.

Anybody else read it? I got the first twenty or so, then culled all my comic buying till recently.

Been reading The Boys by Garth Ennis but that can be very hit and miss.

Still have the final trade of 100 Bullets to read so i may get that done this weekend.

Fignuts 08-21-2010 09:27 AM

Some stuff I've been reading:

Avengers #1-3: Don't bother with Avengers: Prime, New Avengers, and Secret Avengers, This is the book to get. This is even better than when New Avengers first started. Plus, John Romita Jr. on the pencils is always good. Issue 4 comes out next week. Get on demonoid and read this shit now.

Avengers and the Infinite Gauntlet #1 of 4: Pretty much a more humorous retelling of the infinte gauntlet from the superheroes perpective. Or at least until thanos kills them all, I'm assuming. This is a good read just for the dialogue alone. Particularly Spider-man's

Hawkeye: We've got things under control spider-man.

Spider-man: Oh, see when there are explosions, I tend to think things are WILDLY out of control. But it's good to know this is avengers sanctioned insanity.
-----
D. Doom: You will know when doom deigns to attack you. No, I merely defended myself from a series of clumsy attacks.

Spider-man: What about the exploding wall, and all that "Behold the grim visage of doom!" stuff, and...and...YOU BLEW UP A WALL!

Dr. Doom: Yes? That is how doom enters a room. How do YOU do it?

Spider-man: Uh, through a door?

Dr. Doom: The door? Like a peasant?
----
Don't really know if this is an alternate universe or what though, because I own Infinity Gaunlet, and there are ridiculously large story inconsistencies.

Brightest Day: Up to issue 7 atm. Not a fan. Dunno, it just has really bad pacing, imo. Story is all over the place, and there is nothing that interesting. Doesn't help that I absolutely hate Deadman, and he's as close as there is to a main character in this story.

Hulk #24 and Incredible Hulk #611: Been following the whole Fall of the Hulks storyline and that concludes in IH 611, with a fight between Skaar and Hulk. Hulk actually reverts back to who he was in World War hulk, making him as powerful as he's ever been. Ending is pretty dumb though. Hulk 24 is waaaaaay better. Hulk has been the better title ever since it started and this is another example. 24 is basically the conclusion of the Red Hulk saga, and is a knockdown drag out fight. Much better than the skaar vs hulk battle. After I catch up on all my DC stuff, I'm definitely going to start picking up the trades of this book.

Only bad thing I have to say about Hulk, is that they waited far too long to reveal the identity of Red Hulk. By the time they got around to it, there was no way the reveal could live up to the build up. Doesn't help that it turned out to be one of the obvious choices either.

Fignuts 08-21-2010 11:25 AM

Also, first issue of the 9 part Avengers: Children's crusade is out, and that's a really good one too. Looks like it is going to be an Avengers vs Young Avengers story, revolving around the Scarlet Witch. I just hope they don't "redeem" the scarlet witch. She has the potential to be a really great, long lasting villain for the avengers.

Nowhere Man 08-21-2010 11:31 AM

Yeah, I really haven't been digging Brightest Day. It's such a complete and utter clusterfuck, much like everything else DC is currently doing.

dronepool 08-21-2010 08:59 PM

Avengers, Secret Avengers and New Avengers are 3 my favorite monthly "must read" Marvel books. And I agree, Hulk #24 was really cool. Despite it being very "Micheal Bay" and over the top- it's been very entertaining.

Brightest Day is indeed mediocre, Generation Lost is actually more interesting at the time.

Anybody saw the preview for UNCANNY X-Force? Looks great!

Fignuts 08-21-2010 10:04 PM

Yeah, love all the characters on the new x-force team, but I'm dissapointed that x-23 isn't on the team. Never really cared for the character, but she was written very well in x-force, and I was interested in where they were going to take her, and how her relationship with wolverine would develop.

Fignuts 08-21-2010 10:05 PM

Also, Fantomax's new outfit looks like some dark jack kirby creation. I approve. Great pencils and coloring on this too.

I honestly think comics these days need more of stuff like that. I love a deeply engrossing story as much as the next guy, but I feel like "fight scenes" have taken too much of a back seat.

I think they've taken a quantity over quality approach for fight scenes these days, just including as many people as possible in a shot, which while impressive from an art standpoint, isn't the same as a great one on one fight. Everyone in the pic is just in some generic fight pose. One on one or two on two fights force you to get more creative.

That's why World War Hulk is my favorite crossover from the last few years. It was just a series of one on one fights between hulk and the illuminati. And it's why I hated siege so much. How long did we wait for Thor vs Sentry? Years. Was probably the most anticipated match up in a very long time. Shit lasted like 3 panels, because they tried to cram the entire story into 4 issues. Thor vs Sentry should have been a whole issue to itself.

Lock Jaw 08-22-2010 02:58 AM

I only just recently began catching up in a Marvel comics backlog. I'm still only somewhere near the beginning of Dark Reign.

Fignuts 08-22-2010 03:48 AM

Dark Reign is all pretty forgettable, as is siege. Heroic Age is looking great so far, however.

I agree, as much as I enjoy "quality story telling" ... I love good fight scenes in comics.... besides who could pass this up?

It's not on my hold list, but I'll be getting that,

Fignuts 08-22-2010 04:12 AM

There is an issue of justice league coming up that is basically just Lex Luthor vs Deathstroke.

dronepool 08-22-2010 04:18 AM

I like Deathstroke, I'll have to check that out.

Lock Jaw 08-22-2010 02:24 PM

Luthor is also going to meet Death (From Neil Gaiman's Sandman) in an upcoming issue of Action Comics.

Fucking love Ed Mcguiness(SP).

Still half-n-half on 'bio-tech' Iron Man.

Fignuts 08-22-2010 07:51 PM

Yeah, extremis armor was way cooler. This one isn't bad though.

mitchables 08-22-2010 09:02 PM

all this talk of batmen protecting the globe, and things like the upcoming batman inc title which seems to back that idea up, has me worried about the impending destruction of one of my lifelong favourite characters. :-\
