Guy on the internet asks a stupid question he clearly doesn't know the answer to and calls other people on the internet stupid. Classic projection.

Was looking for the clip where he shames some fat dude in the crowd and the camera just lingers on the fan holding his head down in shame/embarrassment....

Such a premium gimmick.

Totally wouldn't fly today.

You can take your pick. Meltzer, Alvarez and anyone who stands to make a profit of selling a “WWE bad” narrative are probably the best place to start. Meltzer lies through his teeth to make AEW seem more impressive than it is. Never mind that the talk of demos has only popped up to make AEW look good, even though it’s bullshit and everyone knows it.

If you want to sell a newsletter or subscription to your feed or whatever, do whatever you can to make the WWE sound like it’s receding in a way that is going to deathly embarrass its network. Meanwhile, AEW is super cool, way to go.

Then you get impressionable folk like slik and Smeat, who aren’t the best at critical thinking, and it gets regurgitated until it becomes something you actively need to correct.

A recent example of this is when a lot of AEW fanboys thought that Meltzer was reporting the domestic buyrate of Double or Nothing recently. This was because Meltzer deliberately conflates domestic and international buys when comparing it to the domestic buys of other promotions. It’s very easy to lead people astray, and it might just be mildly annoying to some, but when you care about honesty, it can be downright infuriating that there are not more unbiased voices.

This was the only part of those 4 paragraphs that kinda sorta addressed the question. The rest was random unrelated AEW/Meltzer rant #3,452.

So apparently this quote...

“WWE Raw on Monday on the USA Network was watched by 1,472,000 viewers, a new all-time low for the show that debuted in 1993.

18-49 viewership was almost the same as last week, slightly up, and the 3rd lowest on record.”

is an attempt to make it sound like WWE is receding in a way that is going to deathly embarrass the network? Or were you just reaching for a reason to rant about AEW/Meltzer?

Groan, you’re being that walrus guy again. Don’t do that.

Yes, the entire discussion around WWE’s business metrics is designed to spin a marketable narrative. Anyone can see that. You’re just being a stick in the mud to try and turn that into an argument.

Misrepresenting ratings data, changing its context, conflating data, preying on anti-WWE dispositions — it’s all part of the same ball of twine.

#1-norm-fan 07-09-2021 01:13 PM

... He didn’t do any of that. He stated a fact and used the overall rating. The same one that has been used when discussing the ratings for as long as anyone on the internet has discussed the ratings.

You just saw a post stating that Raw got its lowest ratings ever and got triggered because it freaked you out that a bad story about WWE might be looked at as pro-AEW somehow so you had to spin shit. Suddenly the HOURLY ratings are what’s important now.

Again, the overrall rating has ALWAYS been what is used primarily when discussing the ratings. You never complained about it before. It’s only a problem now because you’re paranoid and have to find a pro-AEW implication in everything. I’m not just being a stick in the mud. I’m calling you out on your clear-as-day bullshit. Stop it.

If the contextualization of the rating is wrong, then it’s wrong. Doesn’t matter how long people have been wrong for. The overall Raw rating doesn’t likely mean shit to anyone but subscribers of that groupthink.

Lol, I didn’t “freak out.” Project harder, #fan. You saw a Noid post and got triggered because you have to be the contrarian to the perceived contrarian, because you can’t stand not being the smartest person in the room. Time to rip out those “Well, actually’s.”

The pro-AEW/anti-WWE bias is definitely an annoying ass thing that permeates so much of online wrestling discussion at the moment. People don’t need to go looking for shit. You aren’t calling out anything. You are waiting in the wings looking for arguments. You don’t have to defend WWE to point out that the spin around the ratings is bullshit. Stop it.

Mr. Nerfect 07-09-2021 02:06 PM

I remember back when CM Punk was doing The Straight-Edge Society, I would have marked out for Funaki joining the stable, shaving his head, with Punk pointing out that he's one of the most dangerous men on the WWE roster, but no one takes him seriously...until now. Start dressing him in black and focusing on submission-style wrestling.

While Sakamoto was on the WWE roster, I had also hoped that the WWE would give Funaki a call to come in as the manager/trainer of Yoshi Tatsu & Sakamoto, who would become a heel team. I'd just settle for a random NXT appearance here or there.

I like that the WWE are doing something with him. I like that by simply implying he has gone and gotten martial arts training, he has rounded out his game enough to be a player in the WWE. What I do not like is, again, that it took them so fucking long to work out that a) Funaki is talented, and b) He is Asian and has a name that could be connected in pun-form to "kung fu," which they could inaccurately link with images of the Japanese and gi's. It's a light-hearted gimmick, though, which is a field Funaki can own and become world champion someday.

Another position of this is it gets Funaki away from his old image. Look, aestetics in wrestling are often understated. Not so much size and muscle definition, but things like the attire a guy wears, and his entrance. Funaki, for the longest time, has had the same theme music, and has worn the same colour scheme: blue and white. It was refreshing just to see Funaki with red wristbands. It may not seem like much, but by losing the "SmackDown!" tights, and the same old colour patterns and theme music, the image Funaki puts in the minds of fans can itself change more easily over time.

And hey, a push is a push. He should start using the Superkick as a finisher again, though. He used it briefly during his run as Cruiserweight Champion, in what I assume is homage to Shawn Michaels (he's apparently a big HBK fan, going as far as to move to San Antonio, Texas). The Sweet Chin Ongaku making its return with the martial artist gimmick could work out really well.

After enjoying Mania, the follow up Raw and SmackDown failed to hold my interest and I've been out ever since. I'll probably try again and watch the first SmackDown and Raw with fans and MITB. If for no reason other than the novelty of seeing everyone's reaction to walking out in front of a crowd again. Whether they can hold me longer than a week again remains to be seen, given their booking track record probably not but I'll give them a go just because having fans makes any show feel refreshing.

Would really suck if the south's unwillingness to get vaccinated leads to variants serious enough to require another shutdown and wrestling grinds to a halt again. I can't handle any more pandemic wrestling.

Watching Starrcade 1990 and there’s a phenomenal dive botch by some New Zealander onto Rick Steiner.
The guy flips over with the grace of Ahmed and Steiner must react late so the fella slides down his front and lands right on his head while Rick stands there laughing.

Seanny One Ball 07-10-2021 05:38 PM

Hahahaha the original Rey Misterio(original) just did the same damned thing at the end of his tag match too. Looks like he mangled his leg on the ring steps which were rigid wooden ones, not collapsible hollow ones like in WWE.

You don’t get a good peek at it or a replay and you didn’t for Steiner either so they must be legit. Misterio looked bad, his leg had a huge red line down it.

Seanny One Ball 07-10-2021 05:59 PM

WCW PPV’s were so random.
Pick any PPV and there are matches that look like they picked names out of a hat.
I’m on The Great American Bash 1990 and it’s an ugly looking card. The prelim matches aren’t bad, just totally cold.
Dutch Mantel vs Doug Furnas is like watching a big baby being slowly engulfed in hair.
I thought Dutch was wearing a textured shirt until they zoomed in.

Seanny One Ball 07-10-2021 06:05 PM

WCW tv was good in the 80’s, especially during the clothesline era. Just loads of clothesline finishes with the occasional double clothesline in tag teams. That’s what’s missing now, finishes that come from nowhere by muscular dudes beating up guys that look like shit.

Seanny One Ball 07-10-2021 06:06 PM
