Since I think it's bullshit that only cold weather teams get to participate in the Winter Classic, my suggestion is that the NHL pick a "neutral" site somewhere in Canada or something where it's sure to be good conditions and have two warm weather teams play in the game.

El Fangel 01-02-2011 07:36 AM

Montreal vs Toronto anyone?

That's not true. They had an outdoor game in Las Vegas years ago(1991 I think). The could do one just about anywhere during Winter.

Londoner 01-02-2011 11:48 AM

For some reason ESPN here didn't show the winter classic even though they advertised it, and there's no replays of it either. :(

El Fangel 01-02-2011 11:57 AM

Yeah, wasn't even on TV for me:(

Corndad 01-02-2011 01:04 PM

Although the outcome of the score isn't what I liked, that was an amazing experience. Just to hear the roar of the crowd was insane. A lot of fans for both the Pens and the Caps there. Caps just wanted it more tonight have to give credit when due. Ovi is still an arrogant cocky prick but I earned alot of respect for the rest of them tonight. Pens just weren't ready.

OssMan 01-02-2011 01:04 PM

It was on NBC :?::?::?: Your local market team was probably playing since they moved the game back

Evil Vito 01-02-2011 01:07 PM

I remember when the rumor last year was Rangers/Islanders :( then they realized it'd be dumb to only cater to one market, though the hope was that it would put John Taveres over as a star.

and of course, Citi Field offered to hold the event, but I just know they would have coaxed Yankee Stadium into hosting it instead due to name value

El Fangel 01-02-2011 01:11 PM

I got to watch the Laughs win a game:(

YOUR Hero 01-02-2011 01:19 PM

Flames/Oilers will be next. Sometime later this month I think?...

El Fangel 01-02-2011 02:00 PM

No one cares about warm weather teams.

A game in Canada is good though.

Emperor Smeat 01-02-2011 05:38 PM

A game in Canada would be good but NHL cares a lot about ratings in the US.

Something like a Toronto-Montreal game would be huge in Canadian ratings but not as huge in the US unless NHL added US teams or had the game in the US.

It sounds stupid but that is the main reason the NHL has Winter Classics since it is only about the ratings and boost in publicity in the US.

Londoner 01-02-2011 05:43 PM

I don't see why toronto/montreal wouldn't do well in the US, unless the US really are THAT self centered? Pretty sad if they're, which i wouldn't doubt.

While Toronoto-Montreal might get all of Canada watching, in terms of US ratings that would be a 0 from Canada since the majority of tv ads and revenue are based on the US ratings.

It would still get decent ratings from the US but not the huge numbers a Classic located in the US or involving US teams can generate. It still sounds like a dumb reason but the Commish still wants to expand the fanbase and interest in hockey in the southern US.

Lara Emily 01-02-2011 07:08 PM

I'd love it if they'd just do away with the Winter Classic, it makes for god awful hockey games and really ugly camera angles.

OssMan 01-02-2011 08:22 PM

Sorry to break it to you but they're going to start doing multiple Winter Classics, eventually going overseas with them

SaskatchewanChamp 01-02-2011 10:04 PM

Preliminary ratings are out for Saturday night's Winter Classic, and NBC won the night among viewers aged 18-49. The game averaged 4.65 million viewers, placing NBC third overall in average viewers among the broadcast networks.

This should be considered a success, however, one could only wonder if the game would have went on when it was scheduled. I know for me, the TV Guide that comes on my tv did not show the game was re-scheduled.

Oh come now

LoDownM 01-03-2011 04:36 PM

I like seeing the game in angles you don't normally see inside an arena.

parkmania 01-03-2011 05:07 PM

Anyone think that the game will go back to the afternoon next year? Ratings, ratings, ratings.

Should next year have a warm weather team as the visitor? I could see them trying to cash in on a California team visiting New York.

YOUR Hero 01-03-2011 09:30 PM

Next year they should play the game in Winnipeg

El Fangel 01-03-2011 10:51 PM

Or Halifax

El Fangel 01-03-2011 10:54 PM

Having a coyotes vs avs game would be cool if they wore jets and nordique jerseys.

LoDownM 01-04-2011 02:50 AM

I would try like hell to get a ticket if the Avs hosted one. Not an Avs fan, but would love to see a Winter Classic in person.

What? The cameras are way too far away from the ice, the game a lot aslower, the ice is usually terrible so the game actually is slower. It's a great atmosphere but it makes for really bad hockey games

El Fangel 01-04-2011 12:17 PM

Mere days after trading Roloson, down goes Rickity D

And what was left of the Islanders season most likely.

Ricky D injured OMG I can't believe it.

El Fangel 01-04-2011 12:51 PM

Yeah, he was such a model of health and consistentcy. Thats why they traded Roloson.

Sidenote - All my dynasty fantasy teams I picked up Lawsen :)

You play fantasy hockey? Havent noticed at you at all in the TPWW League.

Gertner 01-05-2011 02:24 PM

Lol there's a shock, the habs are collapsing after a fast start. Not like this happens every season or anything.

Gertner 01-05-2011 04:45 PM

I do agree with Lara Emily somewhat. The hockey in the Winter Classic is pretty bad due to ice conditions. The NHL really needs to be careful with this.
Also, I'm shocked the greedy Leafs ownership has not gotten an outdoor game yet. You'd think they be all over a Ottawa/Toronto outdoor game.
