lol I dread Baltimore finish 1st, not because of anything to do with Baltimore, but because Droford will act as though he is Buck Showalter's right hand man.

I'm amazed at how bad both the Jays and O's are vs the West.... the A's and Sox are both SO SHIT, and the amount of games dropped to them just blows my mind. These are both teams 15 games over .500 and they have struggles against 2 very mediocre teams. O's are 10-17 vs the West I can only assume the Jays are as bad if not worse.

poopfromweiner dude 08-09-2016 01:25 PM

some 538 article I searched for:

FanGraphs has a way of converting a player’s WAR into his monetary value on the open (free agent) market. The site calculates how much teams spend per projected WAR in a given season1 and then applies that “market price” to each player’s output at the end of the season. That gives us a sense of how much it would cost to buy the WAR he created. FanGraphs isn’t the only one to perform this calculation — so we’re dealing with a bit of estimation here — but if you take a consensus average, teams were willing to pay about $7.7 million for every additional WAR this season.

Not really trying to relaunch the "WAR debate" but "in theory" to play up to his contract, David Price should only need to average a WAR of just above 4.0 over the next 7 years to be "worth" his contract. A feat he accomplished in 6 of his 7 previous full seasons and a mark he'll likely still hit this season

correct?

baseball is fun

Damian Rey 2.0 08-09-2016 01:36 PM

You are correct. The value of a win is typically in the $5-$7 range. A-Rod was worth about 25 WAR in his time in Texas. By today's standards he as more than worth the money. Brian Kenny from mlb network did a nice breakdown yesterday that said as much.

Evil Vito 08-09-2016 02:19 PM

Bryce Harper is going to only be 25 when he's a free agent, heading into his age 26 season. If the Yankees are going to hand out one more batshit crazy contract, he's easily the guy to do it for.

Granted he's having a massive regression from where he was last year but I think teams have just wisened up to pitching around him and it's gotten into his head. He'll make the adjustments and he'll still hit like 50 HR a year with that short porch.

To be fair, if you go against Sale and Q back to back against the WSox you will probably lose 1 or 2 games.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-09-2016 02:58 PM

Yeah that's true. Plus the amount of great teams who will drop 2 of 3 or even get swept to crap teams is staggering. Just the nature of a 162 game season.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-09-2016 03:02 PM

I think it also has to do with the lower tier teams really loving to play spoiler and take a dump on the top tier teams.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-09-2016 03:29 PM

I don't by buy into that teams looking to play spoiler nonsense. Bad teams all of a sudden play above their heads to the detriment of their division rival, but wait until they're out of the race and their own wins and losses don't matter? Sounds silly.

Emperor Smeat 08-09-2016 04:24 PM

Prince Fielder expected to announce his retirement tomorrow according to Fox Sports. Teased to be related to his recent neck surgery and the results doctors gave after it was done.

weather vane 08-09-2016 04:24 PM

Dale why do you care how much teams spend or give to players?

I think it has to do with lack of pressure. When guys all of a sudden can relax and have nothing to play for, they'll play some better baseball. When the games matter, they are complete and utter shit.

You see it in all sports.

Droford 08-09-2016 07:15 PM

Going to the Os game in Oakland tonight..very weird being 2700 miles from home

Droford 08-09-2016 07:16 PM

I'm sitting front row 3rd base side have an Os flag if they don't take it away

Evil Vito 08-09-2016 07:19 PM

That's really sad news about Fielder. The guy is only 32 years old and was great a year ago.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-09-2016 07:20 PM

He's technically not retiring. Rather, he's announcing he's not physically able to play. If he retired he'd forfeit his remaining salary.

Evil Vito 08-09-2016 07:24 PM

Still doesn't change the fact that he can no longer do what he loves to do at a relatively young age.

Droford 08-09-2016 09:14 PM

Calling the Colosseum a dump insults dumps

Emperor Smeat 08-09-2016 10:36 PM

:y: Red Sox beat the Yanks tonight.

Sox probably need a sweep in order for this series to be successful considering they are barely hanging on to a wild card spot and Yankees cleaning house on their roster.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-09-2016 11:06 PM

It's early August. As long as the continue to win series after series they'll be fine.

For them, that's actually been a big problem in recent years once the season gets to August and September since the 2011 collapse. Usually somewhere in August where things really go downhill.

Not really. The Royals made it to back to back world series titles with a mid level payroll. The Cardinals continue to succeed despite not signing top free agents. The Pirates have had continued success as well.

You see it in all sports.

And they want to pad their stats to help them make more $$ in the off-season. Don;t have to listen to the coaching staff telling them what to do and potentially inhibiting their production, they can just go out there and look for hits/RBI to turn that potential 1-year, $4M deal in the off-season into a 2-year, $10M deal or better.....

Droford 08-10-2016 03:12 AM

Orioles sort of pissed me off tonight couldn't do anything vs some scrub Zach Neal..ugh

At least Toronto lost bad..but they're letting Boston back in now

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-10-2016 10:51 AM

lol toronto losing close or losing bad doesn't make a difference in the standings.

Which is amazing and I believe what the game should be focused on.

which is why I believe the league should be capped, and those 2 teams should be the model of how teams should be built.

Ruien 08-10-2016 11:11 AM

No way the players ever agree to a cap.

Evil Vito 08-10-2016 02:25 PM

Cecil Fielder career home runs: 319
Prince Fielder career home runs: 319

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-10-2016 10:09 PM

16-3 J Happ.

Evil Vito 08-10-2016 11:48 PM

Mets now only one game over .500. Haven't won back to back games in over a month.

Gutless. Absolutely gutless.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-11-2016 12:21 AM

brutal Vito. That shit just sucks.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-11-2016 12:44 AM

Prince Fielder's interview makes me so sad :(

Collins has to go. I really don't see how they can justify keeping him.

They are probably too cheap to pay two managers at once, and Sandy will cite last year's WS appearance and all of the injuries as reason why Collins shouldn't be blamed. But doing that implies that Collins had anything at all to do with last year. They won in spite of him, not because of him.

Plus firing the manager is usually the first sign that a GM's vision is beginning to crumble apart.

Evil Vito 08-11-2016 01:56 PM

Not even halfway through the third game of a three game series and the Diamondbacks have stolen 13 bases on the Mets this series.

That is fucking mortifying.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-12-2016 09:59 AM

Baltimore losing 3/4 to Oakland in close games seems like something the Jays would do

RP 08-12-2016 10:14 AM

Giarardi is being a punk bitch. Pretty lame to promise something in the press and then reneg on it. Yankees arent jumping 4 teams. Let the guy play 3rd. What a punk ass bitch Giarardi is.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-12-2016 10:46 AM

By the sounds of it, it's political. I will say, they did just gain some ground on their immediate wildcard rival.

They were all low scoring 1 run games..at least yesterday the bats woke up and hopefully that carries over to the Giants series
