I think this game looks like it could be fun. I'd probably enjoy it more than SDvR, at least.

At 0:56 in the Macho Man video, it looks like he combos one more into another. That could be fun.

Before we get another Smackdown vs Raw, THQ is going to be delivering an over-the-top, arcade-style wrestling game in the way of WWE All Stars. This WWE game is about getting into the action fast with twitch-like controls and overly stylized moves.
You'll likely recognize a lot of the moves, but expect a very cartoon-y result. Imagine The Big Show power bombing someone which then results in the opponent getting launched 12 feet into the air from the impact. You can even juggle others like in traditional fighting games (e.g., Street Fighter).
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/1919...ndoff-620x.jpg
WWE All Stars (Xbox 360 [Previewed] / PlayStation 3 / Wii / PlayStation Portable / PlayStation 2
Developer: THQ San Diego
Publisher: THQ
To be released: March 29, 2011

There are around 31 wrestlers that will be in WWE All Stars, and so far, THQ has shown off Ricky Steamboat, Brett Hart, The Rock, Triple H, John Cena, Andre the Giant, The Big Show, Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, John Morrison, Shamus and Randy "The Macho Man" Savage. Two additional characters -- Million-Dollar Man and Ted Dibiase -- will be available exclusively through GameStop pre-orders.
All of the fighters are split up into four categories: acrobat, big man, brawler and grappler. Don't expect the wrestlers to have the same moves just because they're in the same category, either. Someone like Shamus will have a completely different play style in comparison to someone like Brett Hart.
Only one game mode was shown off -- a simple one-vs-one gametype. There will be up to four-player support that we'll hear more about at a later date. We were at least told to expect a wrestler creator system, downloadable content and multiple modes including one called "Fantasy Warfare" where players pick between WWE Legends or WWE Superstars to see who the greatest (virtual) fighter of all time is.
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/1919...Move1-620x.jpg
Controls were pretty simple from what I tried out on the Xbox 360. Y is assigned to your strong strike, X is for a quick strike, B is a strong grapple and A is for a quick grapple. Combos can be performed and a different move will happen depending on which direction the joystick is pushed with the button presses.
Players have an energy meter that allows them to use four different signature moves for each wrestler (The Rock's "Rock Bottom," for example.) These meters fill up faster the more a player uses different techniques. Performing these signature moves is done with a combo of either the X + A or Y + B buttons. These special moves also cause all of the action to go into very cheesy slow-motion.
Along with the energy meter is the Finishing Meter which is activated by pressing the left and right bumper together at the same time. A player can activate the Finishing Meter once it's filled up and if they connect, it's over; the opponent is knocked out.
On the defense side, players will be able to counter grapples/reversals with the left bumper and block/counter strikes with the right trigger. It's kind of a guessing game as you're not sure if the player is going for a strike or attempting to grapple. Everything can be reversed, so it's up to you to be quick enough to prevent an attack.
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/1919...Move2-620x.jpg
You'll of course be able to do things like climbing the turnbuckle, whipping players into the ropes -- you can even use objects like steal chairs, although you have a limit to how many times you can use a weapon before getting disqualified.
The other meter you'll be worrying about is your health meter, naturally. You're in trouble when it's flashing red and it'll be harder to get out of pins. One thing I liked about All Stars is that even a pinned player will have a second chance as a meter pop-ups for both players. The player that's pinning the opponent will need to try and fill the meter while the pinned player will be trying to increase the capacity of the meter, making it harder to get filled up.
Overall, I felt that the controls were very easy to pick up and play. I managed to win a couple of matches; granted, I used Andre The Giant against an AI-controlled Rey Mysterio. It'll be interesting to see if players use the Mad Catz Fight Sticks or Fight Pad for All Stars. I think the regular controller is a better fit, but I can see why THQ would want pro controllers.
The one thing I couldn't stomach with All Stars is the over-the-top look for the wrestlers. I mean, I get why they did it, I just think caricature designs of ANYTHING are always gross looking.
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/1919...rt_06-620x.jpg
After the WWE All Stars presentation, THQ had The Big Show, Ricky Steamboat, Kofi and Shamus talk about the game. It was kind of cool hearing how the current wrestlers are honored they are able to go up against old-school wrestlers like Brett Hart, Macho Man and more. It's just as much of a dream match for the wrestlers as it will be for wrestling fans that get WWE All Stars.

Gotta say I'm looking forward to this a bit more now.

Dark-Slicer Diago 01-19-2011 01:12 PM

I was telling myself I'll NEVER play this, now I'm looking into getting it as the price goes down now.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 04:39 PM

No divas in the game and each wrestler will have over 500 moves.

Kalyx triaD 01-19-2011 04:51 PM

If I know the company well they certainly count punches and chops as moves.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 04:53 PM

Well yeah, but they will have their place as it's built like a fighting game so they should have different timings and the like.

Xero 01-19-2011 05:07 PM

Wait, what? There are 500 moves or 500 moves per wrestler?

Either way, it does sound pretty awesome. I LOVE that there's the different reversal buttons for striking and grappling. Wish they'd bring that back to SvR.

Kalyx triaD 01-19-2011 05:08 PM

@ Hasney:

Doubtful. More likely the fighting game aspect is found in the combos and health system, we will not be talking about punishing HHH's overhead punch recovery with Rey's chest slap start-up. Returning to two different counter holds does open up a welcome meta-game and probably fits better here than SvR, which abandoned two-button counters last I heard(?).

The stick/fightpad shows that the left stick may have no use as well.

Per wrestler from the Q&A Destructoid did

Quote:

I later asked Mike how many moves per wrestler we would see: we can expect the average of 500 each. There's overlap, of course, but some fighters like Bret Hart have done so many moves in their career that they'll be doing more in comparison to someone like Triple H.

Kalyx triaD 01-19-2011 05:37 PM

500 is a lot of moves for one character in any game.

Kalyx triaD 01-19-2011 05:37 PM

I can't even think of points of comparison, shit's crazy. Even with overlap.

Syney Aradi 01-19-2011 06:31 PM

At least this game is gonna have more than two modes especially a CAW mode, now I might buy this game because HHH, Bret, Ricky Steamboat & The Macho Man are in it

Xero 01-19-2011 07:24 PM

Maybe with 500 moves they're including combos. I just can't fathom how you can even map that type of move list unless there are a ridiculous amount of stupid position-specific moves.

Syney Aradi 01-19-2011 08:06 PM

I wonder if the game is only playable with the fight sticks & the fight pad and not a tradition game controller

Kalyx triaD 01-19-2011 08:14 PM

I'm betting they're counting different "versions" of each move. A weak powerslam, a medium powerslam and a strong powerslam adds up to 3 "versions" of one move.

That means, if they have "500 moves each" and they are counting W/M/S versions of each move, they would have 166 moves each which differ from situation to situation.

Then they'll include punches and kicks in that count, which would each have W/M/S versions of one punch or kick with a total of 5 or 6 punches or kicks, meaning a little under 160 moves each (punches and kicks aren't moves, they're strikes, afterall).

So, they'll have a lot of moves but saying it's 500 is likely artificailly inflating it.

160 or so moves would be broken up into situational moves. We have...
Both men standing
CPU on the ground and player standing
CPU lying in the turnbuckle
Player standing on the turnbuckle with a standing CPU
Player standing on the turnbuckle with a lying CPU.

Each situation could have the same inputs with different results. Inputing a certain input while both men are standing could result in a piledriver but the same input when your on the turnbuckle with the CPU lying on the mat could cause a frog splash.

If it works like that, it would be pretty easy to map all the different buttons and combos and inputs to the pad.

Only playing, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Can't be any worse than Legends of Wrestlemania.

Lord-Of-Darkness 01-20-2011 09:30 AM

tbh, I didn't mind Legends of Wrestlemania. It just had the promise of being so much better. As so many people have said, it should have just been SvR with Legends.

But if they insist on doing something arcade, then at least they've taken it as far away from 'sim' as possible, with out making Crush Hour 2.

Did Hogan ever have abs?... oh yeah this is a THQ game. Plus his hairline wasn't even close to that full in his 20s. Come on, THQ.

This would be a neat mode to have in the Smackdown games, but definitely not a full release for me.
