In Europe, the demo will be released on Wednesday, 23rd January, Konami has now confirmed.
And it's shown up on the EU marketplace anyway.
I can't see it on the Xbox marketplace.
I'm gonna download it in a bit.
Oh yes.
This demo is AWWWWWWEESOOOOOOOMMMMMEEEE!!
good stuffs. |
Right then, not sure how I feel about it. May be I just need to get used to the system, but parrying feels haphazard, and Free Blade doesn't feel natural at all.
Parrying got easier for me once I seen when to input the command. Free Blade got better as well. On my third playthrough I weaved between attacking, parrying, and Free Cutting like a man possessed. The combat flow is so fucking slick.
If you're not locked on the camera will fuck you over, but I'm starting to think this is just inherent to all action games. Still, the game as a welcome addition of auto-tracking when enemies are nearby similar to Batman AA/AC, which mitigates things when more enemies come on. - Wait til the enemy telegraphs his attack and hold toward him and press X once, do not mash it or do it too early. As far as I know, you can parry anything. You can also Free Blade incoming RPGs. - Ninja Run into his sliding attack (Y) for a small launcher type thing where you have an advantage to Free Blade or go crazy with combos. - Cut off dudes' legs for lulz. - Bridges and catwalks can be taken down by slicing their support columns, but I can't tell if that hurts enemies. |
Having trouble getting the timing of parries down.
What was weird on my playthrough (only one thus far) was that things would either go real good or real bad. When I got to the "boss" fight at the end of the demo, I restarted a few times. I found I would either get every parry perfectly and slash the shit out of him, or else I wouldn't get any of them and I'd get shredded.
Love the demo.

After numerous play sessions, I can share some stuff you may not have gathered from playthroughs:
- Ninja Run + (Y) has a large hitbox and will soft-launch multiple dudes. You can activate Free Blade from here and slice up multiple guys at once. - While usually you can't Free Slice a fully healthy mook, certain moves allow you to Free Slice them at will. Moves like the sliding kick above. - Parrying needs you to hold forward and press X as they attack, the stance isn't long, though. In many cases it will reset the positions of you and the enemy. - Ninja Run + (X) will deflect bullets. And make you feel like the God of Badasses. - Yes, you can Free Slice incoming RPG rounds. Look for audio and laser sight cues. It feels great. - You can stealth kill Gekko. - The AR vision won't reveal every thing on the map. Explore to find some extra grenades and RPG rounds. Move List (Made Up Names): Standard Combo: X,X,X,X... Strong Combo: Y,Y,Y,Y (Ends in lightnings legs) Sliding Kick: Ninja Run + Y Don't Give a Fuck: Ninja Run + X,X,X,X... Dive Kick: Jump + Y Aerial Rave: Jump + X,X,X... Helm Breaker: Jump + X,X,X... > Y, Y Back Step Slice: X+A Advancing Slice: Forward X+A Dodge Slice: Right, Left X+A (or Left, Right) (Completely invincible) Talk to the Hand: Away, Forward X (Free Blade cancelable) Knee Slice: Away, Forward Y Launcher: Forward, Forward X Stinger: Forward, Forward Y (Very good) Break Dance: 360 Motion, Y (wider hitbox than you think) That's all I know so far, and probably all there is. |
Hideo Kojima Disturbed by Perverse Reaction to New Metal Gear Rising Character, Questions Faith in God (Spoilers)
By Jack On February 8, 2013 · 4 Comments · In News http://www.p4rgaming.com/wp-content/...e_own_face.jpg The latest Famitsu magazine has revealed a new character for Metal Gear Rising and the reaction to it has disappointed Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima. He says he now actively questions his faith and the existence of God. In a blog post on Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima laments the reaction to the return of Sunny Emmerich (formerly Gurlukovich) in Metal Gear Rising. He feels exasperated at the perverted content of her that has already been created despite the reveal being announced only two days ago. Kojima spoke to character designers about a redesign; however, they told him that this was the least sexually provocative out of all twenty test designs. http://www.p4rgaming.com/?p=1256 |
Should of made her a butch fatty.
Sunny's back?
Did Kojima suddenly realise he's Japanese or something?
awesome demo. Bening able to slice & dice everything into bits was cool.
The fucking enemies seemed a bit strong. Sliced and diced on one for about 30 seconds before he fucking died. |
Some enemies require you to chip them down in normal combat before you slice them up. Think of Free Slicing enemies as a finishing move, though some action let you Free Slice them early on.
I didn't use the Free Slicing too much, unless chopping down trees. For the enemies, I was button mashing. That might have been my whole problem
Saw this on the side of the art gallery on the way to work. LOOKING TASTY.

Wow.
I'm kind of in shock Konami found a marketing budget down a couch somewhere.
Fucking awesome.

Best Metal gear game of the generation? High fucking praise indeed. I'm so pumped for this. |
More importantly for me, a great action game to follow up Bayonetta. DmC and Ninja Gaiden 3 failed in that regard and I love to see this studio show people how it's done.
I know. I cracked through half an hour of DmC with something feeling off, but enjoying it a little and then I realised that force feedback wasn't working. So I'm waiting on a patch to give it another try, but even the demo of Rising is better than anything I've played of DmC.
The Boss Trailer is better than DmC.
I was really looking forward to this game and then it fizzled out very suddenly a few months back. I can't even remember why. I think it might have been when it was said it would be a sort of Beyonetta type deal, like the gif shows above. I'm not really into games that have the ultra Japanese fight scene thing. Like someone running across the top of a sea of gunfire or whatever else.
I was excited when it looked like MGS with precise cutting abilities and everything was being diced to bits. Downloaded the demo and haven't even touched it, yet. |
You're just not an action game guy then. I fucking live for that shit.
BAH GAWD LES ENFANTS TERRIBLE ARE OUT OF CONTROL
http://i.minus.com/ivR4dITSp7iwE.gif Japan also gets a wooden sword that everytime it's swung, Solid Snake speaks. Been hit with a mild spoiler. Apparently the game is very self aware of how fucked up the MGS story is and I don't know what this explains, but apparently something is explained to Raiden with: SPOILER: show Should be on this tonight. Cannot fucking wait. |
That gif is hilarious.

Think people might be pissed about this. Considering that costume is the one he wears in the first mission. |
Blah.
I gave the demo a spin and wasn't impressed, really. The sword thing was cool for about 5 seconds and then it wore off. The free blade mode actually would probably have been a lot better if it was using the Wii motion plus, which I know is impossible. At least then it wouldn't mean being stuck in place as you used it.
Also was a bit let down by the cutting of scenery. I'd have though cutting something would cause it to react in a more realistic way. I sliced the cable holding a glass chandelier to the roof, expecting it would fall and shatter or, at least, make some kind of noise. It just boringly fell to the ground as a big stiff chunk and vanished. No crash, no physics beyond the falling. It was as if I'd dropped an empty cardboard box. Even slicing a tree wont cause it to fall unless you cut it and the jump at it. Combat did nothing for me either. It seems to be either mash X, mash Y or try and slice someone in half before someone else kicks you in the face. Even though I did manage to slice one guys face clean off, not his head, just his face, I still thought it wasn't so great. I think I can safely say this game is not for me. I got to the Cyborg Panther Guy and turned it off. I'd take Snakes slooooow, sneaky gameplay over Raidens fast swordplay any day. |

Depends what you call an action game. Max Payne is an action game and I enjoy that.
Still, doesn't really excuse the way the chandelier didn't react at all to falling awkwardly. Did anyone see the cat on the beach at the start of the demo and did you try to slice it? |
No, no.
The Action Game genre is a specific type of game featuring a single star who battles often stylishly against hordes of mooks that attack en mas. They're usually melee heavy using swords in particular, though guns were in the forefather of this genre; Devil May Cry. Kamiya, then of Capcom, begun this deviation of 'hack and slash' with DMC when he felt the advent of 3D games were too slow compared to action side-scrollers (Mega Man, Gunstar). With a happy accident of design, he crafted DMC and it lead the action genre. These games are very specifically Japanese in direction and character design. The scenarios are often over the top with a high degree of stylish presentation. Combat is the main draw, with depth similar to a fighting game. This is why all Japanese action games are 60fps. Japanese Action Games: Devil May Cry 1/2/3 Ninja Gaiden 1/2 Bayonetta 1/2 Metal Gear Rising Godhand (to a degree) With God of War a sub-type of this genre emerged that focused less on combat and more on spectacle. QTEs and a more relatable story are traits of Western action games. I don't prefer them as their combat aren't as good as Japanese fare. They don't promise 60fps and lack the style I've grown used to. But whatever. Western Action Games: God of War 1/2/3/Ascension DmC Ninja Gaiden 3 (Japanese yet adopted Western action game tropes to its detriment) WET Ninja Blade (Same as NG3) Important to note the Action games are not the same as Hack and Slash games (Dynasty Warriors, etc), something journalist and gamers infuriate me by misunderstanding. So when I say 'Action Game' I don't mean a game with action in it, which would include just about everything. I mean stylish combat heavy games like DMC classic. These are games where combat exploration is deep and rewarding, where action is high and sometimes unforgiving. But they're not for everybody. |
They need a more specific name for the genre though. Games like red dead and max Payne ARE action games. Just not the same type of action game as bayonetta or devil may cry.
I like to refer to them as Stylish Action games. |
Doesn't this fall under the umbrella of "Hack 'n Slash?"
Not exactly.
Similar ideas, very different in execution. |

LOVE FUCKING RISING THOUGH HOLY SHIT. The boss battles are amazing and I love how you can theoretically play stealthy through the game. Then with the music playing and getting louder as the boss battles get closer to being beat, the vocals kick in and fuuucckkk yeahhhh. |
Yeah I loved that effect in the wolf battle. I was hoping it would be repeated in the other boss fights so you're basically my Santa right now.
And Jesus at that NG3 gif. |
I've been feeling shitty as well as being busy so I haven't played as much as I'd liked, but I was watching streams of people get up to the point I'm at an every boss battle the whole chat flips out when the vocals kick in.
The biggest thing I'm amazed with is that Platinum were approached by Konami on December 2011. I'm astonished that they got a game out of this quality so quickly, even if it is built on the Bayonetta engine. Really hoping that this is a seller as its already getting critical success and that Konami ask Platinum for a sequel with more time. The game is short and some scenery is repeated which are the only signs it was a short development, but fuck me, a next gen sequel for this would send me over the edge. |
A Bloody Palace-like mode would pretty much cement this as 'damn near perfect' in my eyes.
The VR missions to collect are a nice touch, but I found out last night that some enemies have data to collect in their left hands. Also, some levels have different paths depending on your actions so although it's 5 hours, I'll replay the hell out of it like I did Lollipop Chainsaw.
Revengance difficulty is also ridiculous apparently, but never feels unfair. |
I will tattoo this game's code on my back. Have fuckers thinking I'm a Matrix fan.
Tried the demo again. Still can't see it.
Don't worry about it. lol
Just read that the Konami code unlocks Very Hard and Revengeance difficulties without needing a playthrough first.

For those with the PS3 version of the game, Konami announced free DLC is on its way and starts on March 12.
Roughly 30 new VR missions will be available but will only be free until April 3rd. http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...ive-dlc-dated/ |
Sweet!

Fuck it, let's celebrate it's PC release here too.
