The Oil have a lot of exciting forwards

parkmania 10-08-2010 02:30 PM

The indefatigable Stan Lee is back with yet another galaxy of superheroes. This time it's The Guardian Project, 30 new superheroes, each based on a franchise of the National Hockey League. The individual Guardians will each have five powers including one that relates directly to the team they represent. The Calgary Flames dude will have control over fire, while the Philadelphia Flyers Guardian will be able to soar through the skies. Presumably the Edmonton Oilers character will be extra greasy and difficult to hold.

The entire posse of hockey-based heroes will be unveiled at the NHL All-Star game. They were created to appeal to hockey’s current fan base, but more importantly they target tween boys and are designed to attract young fans to the sport of hockey. As the chief NHL marketer put it: “We are looking at how we cultivate a relationship with the next generation of fans.”

Plans call for comic books as well as animated TV, film, and mobile phone apps as well as a robust online presence. The L.A.-based Vicon House of Moves, a leading motion-capture animation house that does tons of video game work, is handling production of The Guardian Project animation, which will be teased when the project is revealed at the New York Comic Con.

The Guardians will work together (reluctantly at times) to defeat a number of villains, and like all good Stan Lee superheroes, they will have, as their creator put it to USA Today, “their own personal problems and hang-ups” (once again, acne would appear to be a likely challenge for the Guardian from Edmonton).

That's sounds stupid to me.

And will therefore make millions.

The Thrashers Goalie Ondrej Pavelec just collapsed on his own during a break in the action and is going out on a stretcher..no idea what happened yet..

He hasn't moved

Droford 10-08-2010 08:27 PM

The thrashers new coach kind of looks like Patrick Stewart.

What avatar? Im waiting for Gertner to choose one for me.

Oops, just read Gertners post correctly.

November 13th @ 221am I can change it back.

OssMan 10-09-2010 02:43 AM

Definitely thought the Thrashers goalie was dead. Caps look pretty bad

Varlamov is out for a week with a pulled groin so Neuvirth is starting the home games tonight vs NJ, monday vs Ottawa and Wednesday vs NYI at the least.

The Caps tv broadcast had the nerve to give him the player of the game tag too..wtf?

Domino 10-09-2010 11:57 AM

Suck it Ducks.

Gertner 10-09-2010 01:50 PM

Your avatar never looked better FA.

Orr vs Carkner tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

El Fangel 10-09-2010 02:02 PM

Ah, missed that on the injury tracker.

Screw you Gertie.

So Pavalec has a concussion and will spend (at least) another night in the hospital.

I wonder if he got hit in practise or something...

Gertner 10-09-2010 07:32 PM

Lol the Leafs are looking damn good. Up 2-0 already.

My guess was the concussion was a result of him falling in a heap on the ice pretty suddenly but that didnt explain why he fell in a heap in the first place.

YOUR Hero 10-09-2010 08:14 PM

I'd think he had the concussion and that led to him falling over.

Droford 10-09-2010 08:46 PM

I dunno..was really creepy seeing it (almost) live though.

Caps busted out of their funk finally with 4 goals in the 2nd and are up 5-2 on the Devils.

Droford 10-09-2010 09:34 PM

The Caps/Devils game has turned into a MMA Event with the score 7-2 Caps with 5 minutes to go. Theres been 4 or 5 fights in like 2 minutes.

And another fight!

El Fangel 10-09-2010 10:48 PM

Yeah, Ovy is off to a sick start.

Oh and fuck Crosby :)

Gertner 10-10-2010 02:26 AM

Orr defeats Carkner again!!!! Oh yeah, Leafs bitches.

El Fangel 10-10-2010 06:16 AM

They lit up Leclaire, be proud. Be very proud.

I understand, but you can't make claims like that after 2 games. If these trends hold up after the first month - then maybe.

There are teams that have only played 1 game this year.

After the first 2 games last year, the Blackhawks had 2 points (1W, 1L) - and this year they have 1 point (1OT, 1L). Not much of a "reverse".

And they beat a bad Calgary team. Means nothing.

El Fangel 10-10-2010 10:30 AM

The fact they were bottom of league in goals for, pp% and pk%

Yeah, it kinda does mean something.

Joey Slugs 10-10-2010 10:37 AM

Didn't realize that this was the newbie thread. Fuck you guys are overreacting.

It was a nice win and Eberle had a sick goal - but in the long run, it means nothing.

El Fangel 10-10-2010 10:50 AM

Ok, let me put this is terms you might understand.

Edmonton was not expected to win, but they did.
They definitely weren't expected to shutout their opponent given the amount of goals allowed last season, they did.
The last place team was not really expected to beat a playoff bubble team, they did.

Hence, huge upset.

As for being newbie thread, its humouring that you say that as I am certain I could recall answers to hockey questions faster then you can google them.

And Colorado wasn't expected to beat the Hawks, but they did. How about Phoenix beating Boston? Columbus beating the Sharks?

You are vastly overreacting to a opening night win. NHL Network, Versus, and ESPN all showed highlights of that game - none of them made as big of a deal out of the game as you are.

Shit - I'm more impressed with what the Leafs are doing than the one win the Oilers had on Friday.

As for your "certainty"? I'm just going to stop you right there and say "not a chance in hell". And since we are on a message board and we will never cross paths in real life - we'll just move along.

Are you seriously trying to be a troll?

Colorado had a good team last year with virtually no changes besides a year more experience for players like Duchene, O'Reilly, Stewart, etc. Playing against a team ravaged in the offseason by salary cap constraints and missing two of their core players in Campbell and Sharp, so the win is less then shocking.

Phoenix finished 4th last year in the league, against a team missing its best setup man and a rookie goalie in net, real shocked at the outcome there.

San Jose and Columbus previous game was fairly close, considering the talent on San Jose vastly outnumbers that on Columbus, so a bit unexpected but not really shocking.

However again, a team not even expected to win, manages to shutout their opponents and score four goals on one of the best goalies in the league.

Clearly that is not an accomplishment at all.

Clearly you have no fucking idea what you are talking about.

OssMan 10-10-2010 05:44 PM

ESPN made a bigger deal out of 3 minutes in a Miami Heat preseason game than any hockey game that has been played this season. Are you really trying to use sports networks reactions to justify your argument, Joey Slugs.

Last year and last year. Thank you for making my point for me.

New season. One game. And you are acting like the Oilers just beat the 1972 Soviet All Star Team. (oh god! an American that knows about the summit series! what a world!) Good game? Sure. Good win to have with that young team? Of course. But stop trying to make it out to be more than it is: 1 win in a 82 game season.

Actually, them making a bigger deal out of a preseason game makes my point - FA here is acting like the Oilers winning was some major event.

It was a good game, but nothing more than that.

Emperor Smeat 10-10-2010 06:53 PM

Yes last year for both of those examples, again I want to reiterate that both those teams have been virtually unchanged since last season.

Colorado made very few changes during the offseason, while as you know Chicago effectively moved to Atlanta.

Phoenix had a strong team last year and had very few players even approaching 80 points, they were also virtually unchanged.

The Oilers didnt beat the Soviet National (Not All-Star) Team, but they put up an impressive win where they were the underdogs, you cant deny that and if you do there really is no point in arguing with you.

Love Subban's compete level. The guy clearly isn't intimidated by anyone, be it Sidney Crosby or Dion Phaneuf. Having said that, I think he might be well advised to tone it down a little...otherwise he might be susceptible to cheap shots. Showing a lack of respect to opposing superstar players is one thing, but it could come back and bite one in the ass.

Watch him get suspended for that while Wisniewski gets off scott free.

El Fangel 10-13-2010 12:55 PM

Guess he got two games.

In other news, complete blindside hit on Pominville. Miller was pretty pissed about it.

Gotta agree that its getting more and more common these days and we are losing alot of good stars because of this bullshit.

weather vane 10-13-2010 05:15 PM

Yeah suspend a guy two games for making an obscene gesture ... then suspend another guy for almost killing somebody. This league can be a joke sometimes.

Gertner 10-13-2010 06:00 PM

Orr vs Godard tonight!

Splaya 10-13-2010 06:40 PM

LOL at Wisniewski

Londoner 10-13-2010 06:46 PM

Gonna see how toronto get on tonight if i can manage to stay up, getting annoyingly tired though.

Droford 10-13-2010 09:25 PM

The Caps are 1-16 on the power play for the year. Absolutely miserable.

and they just scored on the power play.

2-17 now

Londoner 10-13-2010 09:29 PM

torono 4-3 pittsburgh 3rd period just started. Been a couple of fights. Crowd is abit shit though.

Blitz 10-13-2010 10:11 PM

3-0 to start for the first time in 11 years.

El Fangel 10-13-2010 10:12 PM

My christ Fleury is terrible.

Blitz 10-13-2010 10:25 PM

None of the goals were garbage ones. It's ok if you admit Toronto isn't awful, Icebox. No one will think less of you.

El Fangel 10-13-2010 10:25 PM

Did I say otherwise?

I stated that 10/14 is terrible.

LoDownM 10-13-2010 10:31 PM

Staal needs to hurry up and heal :( Missing the best defensive forward on the team right now.

Blitz 10-13-2010 10:33 PM

But none of them were garbage. First one got deflected, third one he was screened by 5 or 6 players, and both of MacArthur's were thanks to the defense.

A goalie can let in a few goals of relatively few shots without being awful.

El Fangel 10-13-2010 10:40 PM

Toronto isnt awful this year at all, pretty decent actually.

I wouldnt call them cup contenders though.

It's because he's inconsistent anymore and his rebound control is one of the worst in the league.

When a fan of a team says this about his goalie, it must be true.

Amazing start for the leafs though.

Montreal is now 1-1-1 lol

LoDownM 10-13-2010 10:51 PM

Just watch like 5 games in row, it's too obvious. Pens really need a new goaltender coach imo, preferable one that hasn't been retired since 1988.

El Fangel 10-13-2010 11:13 PM

Or a new goalie, who who isnt terrible.

Gertner 10-14-2010 12:20 AM

General MacArthur was a top six in Buffalo and Atlanta at times, just never earned the minutes when he was given a shot. he is streaky as hell too. Scored about 10 goals in the first 30 games last year, then just disappeared.

I really like How Buffalo is juts handing games away now. No nee to get off to a hot start or some shit. Jackasses.

Bullshit hit on Pommers. Everyone is defending the Chicago Dman whose name I cant spell, saying he isn't a dirty player normally.

SO WHAT

he took a pussy hit at the back of someone. I don't care what he did before or does after, it was a cheap shot that knocked a guy out and gave him a concussion. Should have been 5 games.

Though he will be on the Ice Saturday - I know Kaleta is going to be looking for him.

It's Niklas Hjalmarsson and Pominville saw him coming. It was not a dirty hit and it was worth the boarding call and game misconduct - but a 5 game suspension? I don't think so.

he took a pussy hit at the back of someone. I don't care what he did before or does after, it was a cheap shot that knocked a guy out and gave him a concussion. Should have been 5 games.

It was a borderline hit, in no way am I defending it but regardless, Hjalmarsson knew it was a dangerous hit and it was his responsibility.

5 Games should have been the correct punishment.

It's Niklas Hjalmarsson and Pominville saw him coming. It was not a dirty hit and it was worth the boarding call and game misconduct - but a 5 game suspension? I don't think so.

Severely hurting a guy and causing an injury known to shorten ALOT of careers FAR too early - 2 Games

Flipping off Sean Avery - 2 Games

Sounds pretty even doesnt it?

I agree. Wiz should of been fined, not suspended.

Oilers haven't won a game in Minnesota for 14 games in a row so far.
