And talks have broken off once again. Games cancelled through November 30th.

Juan 10-28-2011 08:00 PM

Fuck

Emperor Smeat 10-28-2011 08:28 PM

:wtf: David Stern was actually expecting to have all 82 games played even though everyone knew once the preseason/training camps arrived that it would be impossible if no deal was done.

According to Stern the real difference is only about $100 million per year (50-50 vs 52-48 split) while Hunter is saying Stern pulled a bait & switch with demands of 47% for players and then back to 50% once the talks collapsed.

Suppossedly the 4-5% drop the players already agreed to erased 66% of the yearly losses the NBA was complaining about.

Emperor Smeat 11-04-2011 10:55 PM

According to a group of owners, the feeling is the talks are heading towards a bigger "disaster" than anything actually being done.

So far the players are bickering and starting to splinter off with talks of a potential decertification while Billy Hunter (probably gets fired once the lockout ends) and Derek Fisher are forcing the players to stand united. The star players are refusing any more concessions that would lower their salary/power while the other players are starting to get really angry at loosing a lot should the stars take over the talks.

On the owners side, the usual split involving the salary cap is growing along with more owners either hating David Stern or want the 50-50 dropped in favor of 47% for the players share (Jordan is in this group).

The courts are also reluctant to get involved after the negative public opinion gained from dealing with the NFL lockout on both sides.

Aguakate 11-09-2011 02:09 PM

Probably a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway.

In the event of the entire season being cancelled, would this year count on players' contracts?

For example, if I signed a 3 year deal before last season (2010-2011), would this take a year off my contract or would I go into next season (2012-2013) still with 2 years left?

MoFo 11-09-2011 05:55 PM

I hope teh Cavs players accept the pay cut and get declared champions by default

McLegend 11-10-2011 01:39 PM

It would take a year off your contract.

Emperor Smeat 11-14-2011 02:01 PM

It appears all talks have broken down with a flat rejection by the players union of all the deals from the owners. 72-game season won't be possible nor anything done before maybe the final December deadline to save the season.

Players union also filling a class-action lawsuit against the owners due to the owners wanting the players to give up a lot in concessions while not getting a "fair" deal.

As of now in terms of money, the players have agreed to give up $1.1 billion for the new deal (50-50 split) and about 2/3 of what the owners claimed were losses from the players per year ($300 million).

Dragon 11-14-2011 02:28 PM

Can't imagine theres any chance at a season now.

Aguakate 11-14-2011 02:36 PM

The 1998-1999 Season started in February of '99 due to the lockout, so I'm sure there will be some games played, even if it's a very shortened season.

Buzzkill 11-14-2011 03:11 PM

The owners have no intention of seeing this season play out...

I have a feeling the NBA is about to go the way of hockey. Sports are just like TV shows, and when there's a massive break like this people stop caring about the storylines. Look at how many shows failed due to the writers' strike...seems no different.

Expect the playoffs to be on the Versus network a year and a half from now.

Dragon 11-14-2011 03:21 PM

And it couldn't have come at a worse time. It seemed like last season brought a lot of casual fans back to the game. Especially around here with the Knicks. Can forget about all those fans if this drags on for a while, which seems likely.

SammyG 11-14-2011 03:23 PM

Yup, definitely the best the NBA has been in 15 years. Even with the Blazers self-destructing, I was more excited for this season than any other I can remember..

I read yesterday that the players were trying to disband the union or something. Any truth to that or did I read wrong (skimmed the headlines)?

I'm getting the feeling at least in my area that people really don't care that it's gone right now.

According to ESPN, they are not really going to completely decertify like the NFL players did but will do all the legal and court stuff to get a "fair" deal done.

Because the NBA players union half-assed a lot of the planning, it would take 45-90 days to disband unlike the NFL which did it within a couple of days. They also didn't get any paperwork done ahead of time unlike the NFL's union which spent 2 years to prepare for a potential decertification and had all the paperwork ready well before it was used.

These are the people I feel happy for. Fuck the players and owners, they're millionaires.

Also, it's just like LeBron's luck that the Heat will win the NBA Championship, and people will STILL criticize them because "they did it in a 66 game season, not 82".

ESPN had the list of all the real winners and losers of the new deal with one of the biggies being while the owner of the Lakers was a "winner", Lakers fans become the "losers" due to the strict luxury tax rules which could end their historical dominance in the West.

Celts and Pacers talking Rondo deal. Hornets and CP3 might be involved.

I heard the Celts are trying to sign and trade Big Baby too

Emperor Smeat 11-30-2011 01:42 PM

Well at least this is a good sign basketball is back considering Ainge can't go over half a year without doing some sort of stupid trade (or even attempt to do one).

Chris Paul also said he would reject any contract extension if he's dealt to the Celtics which would make it even worse by getting rid of Rondo for nothing after the season.

Chris Paul's agent says he won't be signing an extension and says he's asked to be traded to the Knicks. Didn't take long. Kind of wish his agent would have waited until the players-owners agreement was final before saying something like this. Doesn't really help the whole small market-big market thing.

Anyway, I have no idea how the Knicks could even do this without totally screwing the Hornets. They really have no valuable pieces anymore after getting Carmelo. The only deal they could do is something like Billups, Fields, Toney Douglas and Iman Shumpert. Also, since the NBA has control of the Hornets I think there almost no chance he's getting dealt to NY.

you draft players with fake money then whatever stats they get in a given game counts for you playing against someone else's fake team. Whoever has the most points at the end of a week wins. Then the playoffs and all that.

I'm preying to God that the Jazz get their shit together and at least make this year interesting. Okur will probably be dealt by seasons end since his contract is expiring. Having a front court of Millsap, Kanter, Favors, Jefferson and Okur is solid, but our guards are terrible.

Quote:

NBA teams can't sign free agents until Friday, but the Lakers met with Kapono and were close to a deal for one or two years and about $1.3 million annually.

The Lakers would sign Kapono for a minimum veteran's salary and wouldn't have to dip into their main free-agent tool -- a three-year, $9.4-million contract known as the mini mid-level exception.
Could use the shooting, I guess.

Shisen Kopf 12-07-2011 01:28 AM

Jazz are gonna get Dr. J and Walt Frazier. There, I can make claims that don't have a chance in hell of happening either.

Juan 12-07-2011 01:42 AM

I don't actually think the Lakers are gonna get both, but the GM said yesterday that he's open to trading anyone on the team (besides Kobe) to make the team better, so I think they have a good chance at getting one of them.

Juan 12-07-2011 01:44 AM

Quote:

It is no secret that the Los Angeles Lakers would like to trade for Dwight Howard or Chris Paul, but sources with knowledge of the situation says the Lakers actually have something greater in mind: acquiring both players.

Hoping to pull off a pair of blockbuster moves that would rock the NBA, the Lakers are willing to trade anyone on their roster outside of Kobe Bryant to bring Howard and Paul to Los Angeles, two sources said.

Whether the Lakers are able to make it happen remains to be seen, but with stars Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom on the roster, they have the talent and the financial capacity to make the trades work.

The Lakers have had cursory discussions with New Orleans about Paul within the past few days. It is not clear whether they have spoken with Orlando.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak would not comment when asked about the Lakers' intentions to trade for both superstars, but in addressing general trade rumors surrounding his team, he gave the company line, saying the Lakers are happy with their current squad.

"This time of year, there are a lot of rumors going around," Kupchak said in a telephone conversation. "I'm aware of them and I'm not going to comment. Our comments have been pretty consistent -- this group can contend, so we'll just play it out. Nothing is about to happen. It's much too early in the season.

"We don't even have a collective bargaining agreement to refer to."

While Paul's first choice is to join buddies Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire on the New York Knicks, he would sign a long-term contract to stay with the Lakers, according to a source with knowledge of Paul's thinking. And Howard's fondness for Los Angeles is well-known, leaving no doubt that he would commit to the Lakers long-term.

Sources say Paul and Howard have had several conversations with each other about the possibility of playing together on various teams.

Several trade combinations would work for the Lakers. For instance, they could send Gasol to New Orleans for Paul, and Bynum to Orlando for Howard. If the Lakers threw Odom into the trade to Orlando, they could sweeten the offer for the Magic by taking back the contract of Hedo Turkoglu.

"The Lakers are interested in trying to do something for both (Paul and Howard)," a Western Conference executive said. "I would hate to see it happen. I want Howard to stay in the East and Paul to go to the East.

RP 12-07-2011 02:04 AM

Lakers are not getting both those guys so lets put an end to that talk.

RP 12-07-2011 02:10 AM

Maybe one, but 0 odds at getting both.

SammyG 12-07-2011 10:37 AM

even if we COULD get both, I wouldn't wanna trade LO, Bynum AND Pau. Way too much to lose.

Gertner 12-07-2011 12:29 PM

They aren't even gonna get 1. No young team wants a soon to be over the hill Gasol or Lamar, and Bynum isn't exactly great.

SammyG 12-08-2011 10:52 AM

Pau's only 31... He's got 4 years left. He ain't over the hill, just cuz he had a bad playoffs last year doesn't mean he's over the hill. He's the best PF in the game, still, in my book.

Gertner 12-08-2011 10:53 AM

So why would a re-building team take on a 31 year old forward?

Emperor Smeat 12-08-2011 01:13 PM

The trade or deals wouldn't make any sense considering one of the key arguments made by the owners for the lockout was to prevent smaller market teams from getting gutted just to form a few superstar teams and a stronger cap penalty to prevent the richer teams from just buying their way out of the cap.

Chris Paul won't be leaving the Hornets any time soon because the NBA still needs him there in order to sell the team to a potential future owner. You take him away and the NBA might as well just fold (or move) the team since it no longer has any value in New Orleans.

Dragon 12-08-2011 01:15 PM

If they don't move him the team will have even less value when he leaves in FA and they don't get any pieces back.

Splaya 12-08-2011 02:05 PM

And the Pistons signed Tayshaun Prince to a four year 27 million dollar deal

Dragon 12-08-2011 02:20 PM

Knicks apparently in the lead to get Tyson Chandler. Means they'd have to trade or amnesty Billups.

Also hearing they could try and trade Amare for Paul if this goes down. That'd probably be a good basketball move but damn that'd be a scumbag move after Amare got the ball rolling for the Knicks in signing here when noone else would.

SammyG 12-08-2011 03:27 PM

Dragon 12-08-2011 07:02 PM

And the same day the CBA that Fisher's been working for gets ratified he loses his job.

Emperor Smeat 12-08-2011 07:09 PM

Still room for Howard. Bynum and some draft picks.

Crimson 12-08-2011 08:47 PM

They can still ship Bynum for Howard . If they can't pull off a Howard trade the Lakers will get eatenn alive in the front court..Bynum is unreliable too many injuries

Buzzkill 12-08-2011 08:48 PM

All bias aside, I don't really see the Lakers getting much better from this trade...They just gave away their only reliable big men (both of whom complemented Kobe really well) for a ball dominating point guard. Kobe doesn't need anybody to create for him...don't think he would want that either.

Unless they're able to swing a reliable and skilled 4, I almost see this as a downgrade.
