I want to thank everybody for the contributions, we got to read many of them on the show, which is now available at the following link:
http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean...._Pleasures.mp3 Join us for our show on Wrestling's Guilty Pleasures! Talking people, matches, angles, feuds, companies and more, we run the gamut of questionable fandom, discussing the likes of Sid Vicious, X-Factor, The Invasion Angle, Battle Royals, Squash Matches, 1995, the UWF, The Lex Express, Lord Tensai, The Miz and JBL as WWE Champions, Giants, Toru Yano, Repo Man, IRS, Planet Stasiak, Steve "Mongo" McMichael, Violence in wrestling and much more. A really fun show this week, check it out and let us know what you think! |
Planet Stasiak was hilarious
And I wasn't aware that a lot of people disliked Dreamer. He was easily my favourite wrestler in ECW
I agree with the Sid love. Obviously you watch him now and it's like "fuck this guy is brutal" but put in the right scenario he was perfect. As a child I found him genuinely terrifying. Good booking hides weaknesses and when his weaknesses were hidden (and there were plenty of weaknesses to hide) he led to some great tv.

True Story: Used to think that Sid was the innovator of the "fist bump". Like how he used to bump fists with the fans instead of slapping their hands. Thought he invented that and it was so cool and unique.
Sid was so fucking great
And I also thought he was actually the master and ruler of the world. Fuck it, I wasn't gonna argue with him. He was kind of like the first outright psychopathic bad guy that fans warmed up to and grew to love. (This is just perception I was only like 9 years old lol)
I remember when he came back to squash Heath Slater a few years ago, and he still looked more menacing/imposing/scary/legit than half the guys on the roster
Feel like Lock Jaw and me had very similar wrassling related childhoods.
What are your thoughts on Wrestlemania championship matches ending when a guy gets powerbombed onto his legs? |
I dunno. I am sure that is referencing something, but I have a terrible memory for specifics.
Diesel Jackknifing Shawn at WM11. Michaels sandbagged it and landed on his butt/legs. But at the time I thought it was super cool, and made it look real.
Panel this week very much the antithesis of the opinion here on battle royals...wonder why all the hate?
One of them even says they can't remember any fun ones...really? They're almost always fun when done right. If they haven't before, may I suggest the panel check out the WM X-Seven Gimmick Battle Royal? |
See what I mean. Hardcore smarts hate Battle Royals because they are sticks in the mud
I said I personally like them, especially as a kid - I loved a VHS tape with a random battle royal included. Worked better as a novelty before the days of seeing so much mixing and matching of name talent I think, because take the novelty away and they're usually average. Others hate them more than I do.
My guilty pleasure is listening to cheesy podcasts.
Gertner is as bad as any smart mark.

I can get behind them occasionally. To get a whole bunch of people onto a card as a different-looking buffer between stuff, or to set up a challenger for something, they can work fine as a device. I remember liking a few endings to some, but by and large they are mainly forgettable outside the winner, and I doubt anyone can really remember anyone's Battle Royal record these days. The WWE have done a good job making sure it doesn't matter if you lose them, so what's the glory in winning them? It's not like the panel sent Battle Royals to Room 101 or anything. |
Sid is honestly one of the scariest looking wrestlers of all-time. If you could give a guy a talent transfusion, he'd be the best Brock Lesnar opponent ever.

Well I can't argue with that.
If he could have just been fucked he would have been around way longer.
Sid Vicious vs. Heath Slater would be an amazing PPV draw and don't deny it.
Social Outcasts vs. Sid, Scott Norton and Haku on a Network Special in the next six months please.

The vast amount of Sid love makes me proud to be a member of the TPWW community.

He was one of the first guys I saw do a powerbomb. I also loved his "psycho" music. He just portrayed it well and he was intimidating as fuck to look at.
